it seems like to me that W defense has outscored their opponents!  :)
anyone smart enough to confirm that? ;D

Wabash's opponents have scored 42 points through 7 games.  If I am counting correctly, the Wabash D has returned 3 INTs for TD.  They have returned 1 fumble for a TD.  Throw in special teams:  1 punt return TD.  That's 5 TDs by the defense and special teams, for 30 points.  Generously add the 5 PATs, and the total is 35 points.  So, one TD/PAT from matching the opponents' total points scored.  I think I am recalling this rightly.

Gotta say, I was surprised that the Bishops pulled the upset.
After last week versus the Puppy...the Wally Vegas...and
the rest...but the Red n Black play a solid 1st half, good
3rd QT...and zero-out the 4th...good Mo to take to the LG's...
The number of fans at the game was poor...Were and of
the NCAC posters there???

The wonderful statistical weirdness of football.  Two cases in point from yesterday.  (I swear I am not a wonk; I was an English major.)

Game 1:  Team A runs 85 plays; team B runs 60.   Team A has 19 first downs; Team B has 18.  Team A leads in Time of Possession, about 36 minutes to about 24 minutes. (Team A's 3rd down conversion rate is 32%; Team B's 3rd down conversion rate is 30%,)   Team A records 4 sacks; Team B records 3 sacks.  Team A commits 1 penalty for 10 yards; Team B commits 6 penalties for 50 yards.  Nice advantages here, don't you think.  But Team B intercepts 4 passes, returning 2 for TDs.  Team B averages 7.0 yards per play to Team A's 3.2.  Team B also kicks 2 FGs; Team A kicks none.  (And both teams recover 1 fumble.)
RESULT:  Team B wins 55-7 (+48 points, and covers Wally's spread.)   WAF

Game 2:  Team A runs 87 plays; Team B runs 72.  Team A has 23 first downs; Team B has 17.  (Team A's 3rd down conversion rate is 45%; Team B's is 38%.)  Team A records 416 yards of Total Offense; Team B manages 287 yards of Total Offense.  Team A averages 4.8 yards per play; Team B stays close, 4.0 yards per play.  Team A leads in Time of Possession:  almost 32 minutes to barely 28 minutes.   But Team A is 20/41 passing, throws 2 INTs, one of them returned for a TD by Team B.  And Team B blocks a punt and returns it for a TD.  Team B also records 4 sacks to Team A's 0.
     RESULT:  Team B wins 27-22.
Of course, these are the Wabash/Wooster and DePauw/OWU results.
I figure ExTartan will appreciate this, probably others, too.  Go figure.

Wabash holding steady at 9, not sure that changes the rest of the way after looking at remaining schedules of the top 8.  Wheaton v IWU may be best upset opportunity and a chance to move to 8.  Just need to take care of business and see how it shakes out over the next three weeks.

This is why I strongly feel like this Wabash team is under ranked, presently.  I believe they are a Top 5 team and after having a chance to prove it in the 2nd season, the Final Ranking will reflect where they should've been ranked all year.  I'm VERY impressed with both the X's/O's and the Jimmys/Joes on that defense.  I have no idea how BJ Hammer hasn't been given another opportunity as a Head Coach, given what he and his defensive staff have built.

Dang, man -- you have to be pretty good to get into the top five. Wabash's tournament layout is likely to look like this: blow out some low-seeded AQ in the first round, play a decent AQ or Pool C team in the second round and then hope like heck you aren't headed to planet purple in the quarterfinals. What are the chances that Wabash displays a resume worthy of making that next step in three playoff games?

I agree with Pat. The only way Wabash gets to the top 5 is by making a run to the semis which is going to require beating one of the Purple Powers. Until that happens this our ceiling.

I know it, Pat.  I don't want to stir up anything but I REALLY like the Bash defense.  Obviously, we've seen what happens to really good teams in Alliance (see: wesleydad's not being able to put it into words in talking to us at halftime last year.  Or was it the cold? :) ).  I just have a feeling there will be one of the Purples slipping up because of an inability to be efficient with the pass.  One of those schools has their faithful worried about the QB holding onto the ball too long and the other has one of their All-time great QBs talking about the current QB1 throwing flat-footed.

Besides; it has to happen ONE of these years, yeah ;).

Yeah -- but strong defenses against what Wabash has faced this season ... how does that translate in the quarterfinals or in Purpleville?
