For anyone more familiar with Depauw than I am...

What are their weaknesses as a team? Their strengths obviously outweigh the weaknesses; nonetheless, the game happens on the field. What would Hiram have to do in order to find themselves in a close game in the 4th quarter in Greencastle?

I saw DePauw play Mt St Joseph in DPU's first game of the year, Mt. St  Joe's second.  the tigers came out strong.  Hunt is a very accurate QB; his favorite target is his younger brother.  Hunt is also a very smart runner.  The running game is solid.  On defense, the front four rotate six to eight effective players., and in my view that front is their strongest defensive advantage.  I do not think the MSJ is a very good football team.  They looked slow and made a ton of mistakes in the first half, so it's hard to say how good DPU is based on that game.   Last week, Wooster threw for over 400 yards against them.  I'm guessing that's where DPU will spend a lot of practice time this week.  Wooster's QB has been effective in games late last year and at the beginning of this year. How truly good their passing game is, though, it's hard to say.
I was surprised that  last week DePauw struggled with Wooster before pulling away late in the fourth quarter.
If Hiram can keep the ball, manage some yards rushing, and exploit the DPU pass defense they could make a run at the tigers.  The tough part will be stopping Hunt to Hunt (and to other receivers as well; DePauw has several good ones).  Kirchoff is a good RB, who was all-NCAC last year.  He's not a power guy, but he has some wiggle.
I htink for the terriers to win they have to force turnovers--not a big revelation to be sure.  And at least slow down the DePauw offense.  If Hiram can keep things close late, then, an old cliche, on any given Saturday.

Score.  Hiram won't win a 21-17 there.  They're going to need a ton of points, because DPU will score a bunch.  Wooster showed that a good offense can move it and score on those guys.  I think Hiram's shot here is a last-team-with-the-ball-wins kind of shootout.

Knew the Wabash faithful would provide some solid analysis...

From what I saw last week, the Hiram offense has the players to put points up against the best of them. I'm just hoping there isn't a hangover after they thumped Kenyon. My buddies tell me Paolo has been blowing up every social media outlet with links referencing his record-breaking game. Never a good look from a QB.

If they are able to harness that momentum and bring it with them to Greencastle, I think the Terriers will be able to put some points on the board; especially given Wooster's success. If Philander gets isolated, I see a big game out of him.

I'd also like to see Burchett get some
A to B zone blitzes, the kid is a menace and if he can apply pressure that may help get some errant throws out of Hunt, facilitating turnovers.

I think Depauw knows that one more win will likely find them in the Top 25, so there may also be some extra motivation there.

It's another trophy week.  This week the Old Red Lantern is at stake in Granville.  Denison has won 4 out of 5 against Wooster and I have them as heavy, heavy favorites this weekend.  The Big Red have looked good so far.

Anyone have a story about the origin of this rivalry?

Wooster's first three games in program history (across the 1889 and 1890 seasons) were all against Denison, which was beginning their program at the same time.  Wooster was 7-0 in those first two seasons (with an aggregate scoring margin of 306-4, including a 66-0 win over Ohio State) but intercollegiate sports were then banned by college president Sylvester Scovel, so the next game came in 1901.  According to the link below, the visiting teams routinely traveled by train to the other campus during the early decades of this series, and a conductor's red lantern eventually became the trophy.  Wooster leads the series, 40-37-7, despite having lost four of the last five.
