Thanks for posting this. What a tremendous display of compassion and respect.

Definitely more good than bad from the opening weekend for the NCAC.  I think my major takeaway is that 48 hours ago I really thought Wabash was a head and shoulders above kind of favorite this year, and today I think their path to the tournament is more challenging than I believed.  Wittenberg's defense was exceptional against a really good offensive team and I think their offense is going to come around in the next few weeks.  The Tigers are going to be just fine.  Denison's win against ONU was an absolute statement.  They manhandled ONU, particularly up front which is a thing I never thought would happen against an upper half OAC team.  Minton is great, Drew Dawkins was really impressive in his debut.  Denison has a program built there, not just a golden era fueled by a generational player.  This is going to be another three team race here this fall.

So I was at the Hiram Marietta game, and I'll concede our offense absolutely struggled. Marietta's front 7 just outplayed us, point blank. Beyond that, the score indicates a more substantial loss than it was. We had a couple very good special teams plays early on, however, a costly fumble early on set Marietta up for two quick scores.

Marietta deserves the credit, they were the better team and outplayed us. But, being at the game, I'm not as discouraged by the score as I would be if I read about it in the paper.

Moreover, I honestly cannot remember a year in the past where the NCAC would have had a winning record against OAC schools. Up until 2017, there were pretty much only two schools - Bash and Witt - that could have consistently bettered OAC opponents. Good for the conference, especially OWU.

Just finished watching the first Don Morel show of the year with Brent Harris the Wabash SID hosting Morel, as usual.  A couple of takes.  Don Schuch, who started on the DL as a sophomore last year, is lost for the season with a knee injury.  David Marsh, a transfer from Miami, recruited out of high school, has transferred in and is expected to be a starter on the DL.  Ike James is healthy after being lost in the second game last year and out for the remainder of the season.  Isaac Avant, a 1000+ yd rusher last year, is also back.  Morel mentioned that we could see both of them on the field at the same time.   The QB battle in camp was intense.  Jake Reid started all ten games a year ago, but he is being pushed by Ian Thompson, a freshman from North Central in Indy, and Seth Gallman, a sophomore.  Morel said he is not yet ready to name the starter.  I expect is will be Reid, but who knows.  Report on Thompson says he could be the next QB star.
Otherwise, Morel sees particular strengths in the defensive backfield, where all four starters return; at LB, where Brock Heffron returns for a fifth year; and on the OL.  Biggest unknown is at WR.  Ra'Shawn Jones is the lone returning starter.  Word is that a freshman from Florida, Cooper Sullivan, will be a one spot; and Kyle Stroh has moved from defensive back to WR and, according to Morel, will see plenty of time.
UW Stevens Point will be a tough opening opponent with a game vs. a top 25 John Carroll team last week.

Two out-of-conference games this week:
DePauw at Central.  Wally establishes Central by 10.5.  DePauw experienced heavy losses on defense and at RB and WR.  Central comes off a 42-14 opening weekend win v. Northwestern (MN).  Central won last year's game in Greencastle in the rain.
Wabash at UW Stevens Point.  Opening game for the LGs.  The Pointers are coming off a 21-7 loss to a very strong John Carroll.  Their starting QB was injured last week, and last year's starter, who had moved to WR, replaced him.  No word yet on who will be taking snaps on Saturday.  Wabash won last year 16-13.   Having a game under their belt would seem to favor UWSP, but Wally has Wabash by a generous (in my view) 13.5.

Three games to open the conference schedule:
Wittenberg at Hiram.  Wally says Witt by 38.5 after their opening loss at W & J.  Hiram went down to Marietta 41-0 last week.  Coming off a loss, the Tigers will be ready to roll.
Could be a long afternoon for the Terriers.
Oberlin at Wooster.  Wooster started strong last week with a convincing W vs. Bluffton.  Renteria to Strausbaugh was about what was expected.  Oberlin was shut out by Kalamazoo, but gave up only a field goal in what will probably be DIII lowest scoring game of the year.  Wally has Woo by 28.5.   Do the Yoemen really have a defense?
Ohio Wesleyan at Kenyon.  Both are coming off wins, Kenyon's by a single point (on a gutsy two-pt conversion) in 2OT at Catholic to break a 26-game losing streak.  OWU handled Otterbein 22-10, with 3 FGs by Sanfilipo.  Wally says the Bishops by 19.5.

     Allegheny and Denison are idle.

None of those expected to be a the top of the NCAC going against one another.

Here at last, here at last, thank God almighty, the game notes are here at last.  Waiting an extra week for the season to start has made this a long week.  Safe travels to those making the trek to UW-SP. The weather forecast looks like it will be a great day for football.

Below are Wabash's game notes for this weekend's game at UW - Stevens Point.

689 program wins.  A great season and you're in rarefied air in D3 football history.  That's awesome!

p.s. I enjoyed that they have "Wabash" in the pronunciation guide to try an curb the mispronunciations.

Well, I don't think the UWSP announcers read that guide.

Looks like the starter for Wabash will be Liam Thompson. I would have to assume that Reid will see time at some point...

I remember watching Thompson in HS and knew he was legit. UWSP announcers seem surprised, but having seen Liam play before, I am not at all.

Wabash is down 21-7 at the half to UWSP. Defense doesn't look good. A failed FG fake and a turnover deep in their own territory has really handcuffed Wabash.

This is Exhibit f'n A as to why we should not ever take Week 1 off. There's no good reason for it. None.
