Off we go.  It is going to be a warm one in Crawfordsville tomorrow.  Wabash is going to score a lot of points.  Going into the season, the biggest question is Wabash's defense.

Thanks, Sigma, Brian, and 83LG for season outlooks and game notes.

Contrary to some expectations on this board, DePauw's QB1 today is senior Wally Renie of Cincinnati Mariemont.  Flip card: https://docs.google.com/viewerng/viewer?url=https://s3.amazonaws.com/depauwtigers.com/documents/2022/9/3/flip_card_090322.pdf&date=1662205162

Good luck to every team in the NCAC today, let's start the season off at 9-0!

How old do you have to be to get Senior citizen ticket pricing at LG Stadium?  Website doesn't say.

It is nice to see that the Wabash defense is still awful. Not sure how you can be so bad on 3rd down.

North Central could score 80 next week.

Can't wait for the excuses.

North Central 80 Wabash 81, I'll take it.

Tough day in upstate New York for Wittenberg in Coach Jim Collins' debut at his Alma Mater.  The injuries to the back seven and overall inexperience in the secondary were certainly glaring. The Cortland passing attack is potent, for sure, but the Red Dragons were firing bombs to open guys at will from start to finish.  A lot to work on for Wittenberg in the bye week as they prep for league play.  They get Kenyon and Hiram on the 17th and 23rd, then it will be interesting to see whose defense has improved more on October 1: Witt or Wabash.

A couple stats from the Witt game really jump out. Cortland had 681 of offense but only 23 first downs.  That's 30yds per first down, and 25 yds per completion! Those seem like huuuge numbers. By comparison: Wabash - 663 with 33 1st downs / 20yds per 1st down. Hampden Sydney - 490 with 29 1st downs, or 17 yds per. How did Cortland only score 48?

HSC passed at will sometimes, but only averaged 12 1/2 per catch. Can you imagine the game if every completion were double that?
It's either a thoughtful comment or smartass sarcasm. Recognize the difference.

HSC is a poor mans Purdue. HSC coach is a genius at times, but can arrogantly rely on his system, which can be said for many teams/coaches that run a unique system. They'll live and die by it, which maintains "consistency".

This was an impressive stat too, from D3's write up: " J.J. Laap hauling in nine passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for Cortland. "

It was eye-popping how wide open Lapp and his fellow receivers were on "go" routes all day, including multiple TD strikes of 50-plus, including on of 90 yards.  Throw in an 80-yard TD pass to the running back on a broken play and the average yards per pass completion were off the charts.

Again, lots of work to do for the Tigers.

I think we're going to have to get used to Big 12-style shootouts in the NCAC.

Just watched the game.  As much angst as I want to have toward the defense, I want to temper it by saying that HSC has some talent on offense, and they are going to score and move the ball on a lot of teams.  Now that Ridings has tape to review, I am sure there will be a lot of "coaching up" to be done.  Usually you want to see the improvement from week 1 to week 2, but seeing how week 2 is North Central, I think I will table any expectations for noticeable improvement for a week.  Ultimately, the players on defense simply need to play better - cover better, tackle better, pressure better.

Now, that offense...they are special!  Derek James was a revelation, and Liam is a true dual threat.  As Smed said, it may come down to shootouts, and if it does, I like our chances to score with anybody in our conference.  Incremental improvements on defense, and this could be a fun year.  Very entertaining first game to be sure.

Lastly, shout out to the production team.  Always great video, Jim does a great job on the call, Steve gives good insights.  Watch other streams and you will see how good these guys are.  Well done.
