It's either a thoughtful comment or smartass sarcasm. Recognize the difference.

Thank you for cleaning up the legalese for me... I did not study law, and wasn't sure what charge should be brought upon those people!  ;D

Wabash Hires Jake Gilbert as New Defensive Coordinator and "Head Coach-In-Waiting"

I think this is a great hire for Wabash.  Jake will serve as DC this year and take over for Morel after the 2024 season.  Congrats Jake.

Quote from: sigma one on March 04, 2024, 03:26:29 PMNow, finances, travel (related to finances), and other factors should be thought carefully about--and trump (in my view again) what I'm going to call "academic snobbery."

Without having any inside knowledge or even any equity in the school, I bet this is why Allegheny left the NCAC for the PAC.  The PAC is a hodgepodge of schools as far as I am concerned.  The only true similarity that all the schools in the PAC have is the fact that they are in Western PA or a hop, skip, and jump from WPA.  When you add in the 2 football affiliate member schools, there are night and day differences between the institutions top to bottom. That is not to say they are complete differences, as there are similarities between schools, but there is not the harmony you see like the NCAC offers.

But this is D3, there are no multi-million-dollar TV contracts to help pay for a school in Meadville, PA to travel deep into Indiana to Crawfordsville for multiple times across all sports every year. If it was a one-off OOC game, then it makes sense to make a trip like that once every other year just for the experience. But to do so in a conference, you now have that expense for all the sports, which takes a toll on the budget.  Isn't it easier and more financially responsible for Allegheny to make their furthest conference game be Bethany which is closer than all but 3 NCAC schools?  Good for Wabash and DePauw if they can absorb those costs without hesitation, but I don't think it is financially prudent.

This is absolutely, positively, great news. I am very happy with this hire - and expected Gilbert to be the next head coach anyway.

I feel like I just took my socks off after a 20 hour day.

I love this move. Welcome home, Jake. WAF.

An absolute home run for the LGs, bad news for the Tigers.  Gilbert will have the hard-hat-d wearing Band-Aids over their noses in no time, and will be a huge addition to the recruiting efforts.  This is the best hire the Bash could've made.

Jake--great coach and better man.  He will immediately improve the Wabash D.  He comes with a bonus:  his son was the first-team 6A (Indiana's highest class) all-state QB last year at Westfield and has committed to Wabash.  I'm assuming Jake will be there this spring to begin installing his defensive scheme. He will immediately make the D more aggressive. They have almost everyone returning from last year's team that was significantly improved from the previous year (hard not to be!).

Agreed - this hire hits on so many different levels; an insightful move and bit of timing.  I think one place Wabash has struggled at times has been finding coaches with that certain combination of coaching success AND a real understanding of the place (Don't take that as a knock on anyone -- It's just a really hard thing to do). This though was an opportunity to check every box and then some. I'm glad to see Wabash approach it this way.

I agree with this. There has to be some buy-in. With Jake we don't need to worry about that. And obviously he's had success.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out this fall and beyond, of course.

As an alum of Westfield HS ('83) and Wabash College ('87), I am delighted to see Jake get this opportunity.  I echo the sentiments of the other posters - I think this is an outstanding hire.  WAF!

Huge fan of the Gilbert hire! Anyone who has heard his story of his journey in life cannot help but be impressed and humbled. He brings a passion for building great Wabash men and competitive football team that is unmatched in my mind. I wonder what the day to day dynamics of the team will work with a "coach in waiting" situation though? No doubt Gilbert and Morel will work it out, just curious as to what it will look like.
