BB16-

1) Witt showed me a lot Saturday by not letting themselves get thoroughly pasted.  Week 1 is usually the worst game of the season for most teams...I'm willing to give Witt a bit of a slide on the Cap game after their improvement last week.  The idea behind the spread is to have the pick distribution be roughly 50/50.  Right now the count is 8 for Witt, 5 for Alma.  The OAC pick 'em has Alma giving 7.5 points and the picks are overwhelmingly in favor of Witt.  If I spot Witt any points at all, everybody will take Witt which makes the whole thing no fun.

2) Allegheny's offense stinks.  W&J's defense isn't as bad as you might think.  All of Hanover's points came after W&J had built a 35 point lead.  Allegheny's bread and butter is the running game...their top back, Tarquino hasn't carried the ball since the second quarter of the B-W game (any Gator fans out there know what's up with Tarquino?).  No Tarquino means no run game which means the Prez are huge favorites.

Allegheny had a lot of trouble getting the ball into the endzone, but let's not make comments like "the offense stinks".  They've outgained two opponents without their top back in a run-oriented system.  Obviously, I'll agree that they need to keep W&J's offense off the field as much as possible to give themselves a chance Saturday but if I remember correctly, that's exactly how they won at Wabash last year.  I've got no problems with W&J being a considerable favorite, I just thought 24.5 was pretty hefty.  We'll just have to wait and see if the Gators can prove me right this weekend.

24.5 might be hefty...but as of right now the picks for the W&J/Gheny game are split even at 7 apiece which means

1) the spread is doing it's job and

2) I'm not as crazy as you might think.

I had heard news reports earlier this year that the Butler Bowl was going to be renovated or upgraded or facelift ... something to that effect. I do not know when it was supposed to happen though. Maybe Butler is starting to realize what the lack of a solid football program does to the university or maybe they just have money to spend.

You can be as crazy as we think for totally different reasons Wally.

I'm hoping to get up to Washington on Saturday to see the game.  Since it's the only Gheny game close to me and gas prices are killing me, it may be the only game I make it to this year.  I'll get to find out first hand whether or not you're crazy, Wally.   ;D

Game notes (preview) from WashU's site...

http://bearsports.wustl.edu/Game%20Notes.pdf - the Duessing kid has some huge career numbers!  Let's hope we keep him shut down...

Wally - all good points.

Anybody else see this sweet pic of Don Juan from the red & white.  It was in last week's Bachelor... http://bachelor.wabash.edu/issues/2005f/issue1.pdf - it's on page 12, worth a look.

Good game notes from Wash U.  Funny how in all of the Duesing hype in those notes they forgot to mention his 5 catch, 15 yard performance last year.  Strange.  That kid's numbers are sick though.  He could stop now and have had a great career.

I like the pic of Tamarco from Saturday rolling off of K'zoo's crumpled quarterback in Hewitt's article.  Tamarco is a beast.

That is a pretty sweet photo. But I have one queston for the rest of the Wabash faithful: When did the Bachelor become 12 pages? When Wally and I were on staff in the late 90s it was never 12. It was almost always 16 and, occasionally, more. 12 pages. Wow.

Nothing like the 1:00 a.m. editorial decision to add an extra 4 pages to the paper...ah, those were the days.

And not only did we have 16 (or more) pages, our pages were bigger, we didn't have digital photography, and we had to walk to the Bachelor office barefoot in the snow.  :)

Lucky for you all, The Bachelor had one kick-butt photo editor back then who got the job done even with just a darkroom!  ;D

As a follow-up re: The Bachelor (and then we can get back to football) ...

To give the newspaper the benefit of the doubt, most issues from the past two years did, in fact, have 16 pages, though a small number were 12 pages. Clicking at random, I didn't find an issue with more than 16 pages.

It wouldn't surprise me, with this being the first issue of the school year, that the staff might not have a full crop of writers, photographers and editors in place just yet. Plus, the coverage pertained to events like the Red-White scrimmage and the XC team's Hokem Karum race, neither of which could qualify as real major events on campus. Things like that are just preseason trial contests. Hopefully the coverage will expand when the varsity teams get into full swing.

LG; I had heard/read the same info on the Butler Bowl, ie, major renovations. The program could be a sleeping giant (no pun on the Men of Wabash). I thought Witt looked ok on Sat., but after the previous week, anything would be better. Not as big of a crowd at Welcome, less than 5,000, than what I expected. The Bishops choke against the Tomcats, a program that has very little history as a winning program, was a blow. One more tune-up, then conference play. The Ohio State game was a blast, even with the loss. GO BISHOPS

Obviously, I am an outsider to the Bachelor situation but I clicked the link and since there was a big gray advertisement soliciting people to join the staff and fill that void and more, I would guess you are right on track WCLegacy.

A sidenote on the Wabash paper...

Why do you guys take offense to others making the same old jokes about being an all-male school when your paper publishes student cartoons that does the same thing?  And I can't put a finger on it exactly, but I kind of chuckled when I found out your student paper is called "The Bachelor".  Any other non-WC'ers find that funny somehow?
