Old Phart,

I thought Kenyon held the honor of the longest losing streak.  If that is so, please do not attempt to rob them of their glory.   ;D

I should have been a bit more clear - I meant the "at the time" longest losing streak, not the "all-time" losing streak.  Oberlin clearly owns the "all-time" record. Even so - I erred.  Thiel had the second longest current losing streak at the time (22 games) when they finally won agains Oberlin in the first game of 1996 (Oberlin had the longest at the time).  Still, when you look at Thiel's 1994-1998 record of 3-47 there has been quite a change - and it wasn't through lowering academic standards (the original concern of the post I was responding to).

BTW - Does anyone know who has the current futility streak?  I tried finding it in the NCAA record book but they only seem to be interested in wins.  A casual look shows Hiram with 15 losses in a row.  Any other team out there that currently has more?

Keith's Around the Nation column usually has a streak update included somewhere toward the end.

Wally,

I think it would be pretty hard to do an evaluation on who the NCAC would admit compare to the schools that you mention.  We have allowed many marginal students in.  Some have taken advantage of the opportunity they were given, and some have left after the 1st semester with an 0.0 GPA.

I hope the FS your talking about, steps up.  If he could play to half of the hype he has been given, he could be all conference.  In my opinion he is the most over rated player to put on a Wabash jersey.  As we all know: Opinions are like "A"holes, everyone has one.  I heard he has been working hard to improve himself.  I really hope so.

BashBacker#16

BB765,

Your opinion - those are pretty strong words.  I disagree and I think many others would as well.  We'll see how this season goes.  I am just glad he has been cleared to play.  Didn't you also tell us that Neighbors had the inside track on the starting QB job during camp?

Wally,

With regards to what you ask about who got accepted and chose to go somewhere else, One thing I've learned from reading this board is that someone has those numbers and they'll emerge before long.

MUC just has a special program, just like De La Salle high school in california.  Somehow, all the right coaches and administrators ended up in the right place, the program became successful, and it became a self-sustaining monster.  Are there factors that work in their favor up in Alliance?  Sure, but that's all part of having the perfect mix.  I think the top teams in the NCAC are just as good as the top teams in the OAC.  Mount Union, however, is an entity unto itself.  If their formula could be reconstructed, someone would have tried to do it just like they do.  One thing that you can't reproduce is Larry Kehres.  The man is a football champion of the highest order, and his leadership is an intangible.

As for OWU and championships, I see that many of you disagree about OWU's championship potential.  Guys, look at the situation.  They've had the talent to do it before, and they haven't gotten it done.  The same guy has been in charge for over 15 years.  What makes any of you think that the coming years are going to be different?  Okay, so he has put in required study hall, but I'm not sure that's going to be the difference maker.  By the way, AUEagle, I did not suggest that OWU advertise themselves as the NON-CHAMPIONSHIP school.  However, if a kid is looking to become part of a championship program, if that is a priority for him, he best not go to OWU.  You'll never see that in any kind of brochure, but I believe it is so.

The_Bishop

Ah yes, one look at the e-mail address and it all comes together for me TU2698.  Like all the other one hit wonders who lasted a mere one full season with the program then left because of [academics/injury/coach purportedly didn't like me/etc.] or, in your case, got beat out by a handful of solid underclassmen halfbacks and got a taste of the pine that proved too much for your big-fish-in-a-small-town ego, it's borderline amusing that you represent yourself as one who can speak intelligently about OWU's current work towards a championship.

The next time you're out for a jog with John Zak tell him I said "hello."  ;D

Good luck and no injuries tomorrow to all NCAC teams. Wabash Always Fights!

OldPhart, not only is it in Around the Nation, it was on the front page of D3football.com until about 24 hours ago.

very interesting conversation going on via this thread.....

one observation:

scotty has what he thinks is a hidden agenda as he continues to bring up "recruiting dollars, lowering academic standards, etc"

No matter what you think, D3 schools do NOT operate in the same way as Scholarship programs do....your thoughts that D3 schools are doing whatever it takes to field a competitive team, has no merit.

SaintsFan, we have been talking about "recruiting" dollars for travel, exposure, broadening the base...as far as lowering academic standards, it has been brought by others ala the Thiel situation...it occurs in real life...

My apologies to this board.....read the following posts you have written Scotty...

wally, i was being sarcastic...but they do have strong gpa's...my feeling is that its agreed and i would think its for more than 2 years but i dont know...im very happy with the NCAC as opposed to D3 football factories...

oldguy, please...we were just getting along...my original thought was that D3 is growing in stature and maybe recruiting is a little different than before...

gator, agree with you wholeheartedly about Wooster's championship season helping recruiting...when an athlete has a choice from quality academic institutions, it is natural to be attracted...also, unlike the schools that bring in 75 to 100 freshman, note that Wooster had 32, Wabash 44, Depauw 34, Allegheny 42, Capital 46...not sure on Wittenberg or Ohio Wesleyan...

with all due respect, when did the trend start to bring in large numbers of recruits int D3 programs...im naive in D3 and respect all the schools but just puzzled about the "building of programs"...is this fueled by the administrations, admission offices, allumni...again, im not being negative just a little puzzled...

how can you coach 180/240 players...what am i missing...little johnny wants to play football in college and daddy writes a check for 30k...i feel much better now...

sounds like we are wooing kids in for the dollars...is this a Mount Union trend?...sort of sad in a way...

what is the reasoning in bringing in such large recruiting classes lately? is it working and do most of the players stick? just curious?...

Tell me you don't have an agenda, Scotty.  You got ran from the OAC Board by realitycheck for the same conversation...

I hate to tell you this but someone brought up the Thiel situation to show they have been progressing....but not to show they are turning into a "D3 Football Factory"---if one even exists.  You are the ONLY one who continues to bring up number of recruits, dollars spent and "bending academic rules"...

You are correct.  I did say that.  All that I mentioned, plus more had a chance of starting.  The lack of productivity brought those comments on.

If the young man you speak of was half as good as he was suppose to be.  The above comment would have never been said.  He had to be moved to "D", because he could not perform at QB.  You know he was hyped as being the best recruit Wabash ever had, and I think you will find more that agree with that.

So far my comments on Russ have been proven wrong.  I hope he continues to prove me wrong.  Because if he does, that means we have a very good shot at winning the NCAC, and going to the playoffs.  Much to early to talk about those things.  I think you will agree on that.
