Smed Indy-

What exactly does this mean?

"This board complains about Wabash fans - we got nothin' on the fear and loathing that Trinity fans have. "

From this Trinity fan, if they don't want to reschedule, they don't have to.  One bit of beauty considering all of this is that we have a playoff that can't be disrupted for the sake of one game, whereas the bowl system allows a four week grace period.  Would any of you choose bowls over playoffs?

I know, some schools may get screwed if both teams end up in the playoffs.  These games don't generate enough cash for the rest of the conference to go through the trouble of rescheduling.  It's the nature of the beast and I say we let it go.

Scotsfan,

I was just reporting information that might be interesting, not interpreting facts.  We will see how he does as the Big Ten schedule goes on, but the hype machine at the Northwestern newspaper has already started.

Wabashcpa:

The playing field is "as level" as any school's academic integrity, or lack of it, says it is.  MUC hasn't won the D-III championship for several years now...hmmm...go figure...hmmm....their 100+ freshmen come to them each year since the OAC doesn't allow active recruiting...hmmm.  Wish I could figure all of this out.

I think it's important to remember, however, that for a long time Mount was one of very few DIII schools that actually had national exposure.  A kid in Alabama, for instance, could turn on the DIII championship and say "here's that purple team that never loses".   They may not have won a championship for a couple years now, but that doesn't mean the benefits of their long run have worn off yet.  In the case of this kid from Norwich, I'd guess there were other circumstances that most people don't know about.  I'm not second guessing that his decision to go to Mount was purely football driven, but his reasons for LEAVING Norwich may have been related to something else. Just my two cents.

BashDad,

Wabashcpa was taking issue with Norwich and not Mt. Union.  As an outsider, I don't see what MUC did wrong here----he contacted them.

While MUC isn't as strong as school as those in the NCAC, I hardly think they are slouch either.

I would think you'd be sitting back enjoying Wabash and their QB's success while some are eating crow from their comments about that particular player.  I don't understand why you are choosing to harp on this one....

Please don't go 'scotty' on us...

Good luck Saturday.

TU - that was a general statement about a post Pat made (and my observation follows) in the SCAC board - that for some TU fans with big mouths everything isl a consipracy against them.

Mind you - I do think it's someone else's doing they can't get the game worked out,  and it's tough for me to say that...

As for the Norwich / Mt Union thing - drop it NOW! Norwich has their own admissions standards, and he fit them. His grades were good enough to transfer to Mt. Union. It's not like anyone has transferred in or out of the NCAC under spurious circumstances (remember Ipkoh from Chicago to Oberlin to play hoops). You're making yourself look foolish by mindless insinuations.

Not every D-3 school has the academic profile of the NCAC, NESCAC or SCAC. Just like D-1 has a range of schools from Rice to Directional State U.

Kids make decisions like this all the time.

On the Mount Union and SAT thing:

Just because a kid doesn't have a a good SAT score, it doesn't mean he isn't admittable to an NCAC school.  There is no line in the sand at which a kid won't be looked at who does poorly on his SATs.  I personally know kids who have gotten in at Wabash with horrible (and I mean horrible) SATs.  However, those kids generally have something else going for them such as high GPA, a ton of extracurricular involvement, great interviewing, etc.  Having first hand knowledge of the admissions process at Wabash, I can tell you that there is no line drawn at inadmissable SAT scores.  It makes it tougher to admit the kid, but I can point out at least 5 kids on our team now who hovered right around the 900 mark.

We need to stop pulling out the our conference is righteous thing.  It's hypocritical.  Personally, I don't see anything wrong with admitting kids with low SATs.  Standardized testing means very little, and there's something to be said for giving a kid a chance.  Wabash's all time leading rusher had very poor SAT's, but worked his a#@ off during his four years at school and graduated with around a 3.3.  Give the kids a chance; there's nothing lost if they can't make it.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't hold our student-athletes to a higher standard once they're in school, but in terms of admittance, what does a standardized test score really tell you about whether or not a kid is going to be successful in life.

In regards to football, go Wabash and Notre Dame.  If Notre Dame gets beat by Purdue again this year, my girlfriend will never let me live it down.

Sidenote, isn't it great getting to actually watch college football once you graduate?  The three worst things about playing college football are not getting to see some great games, no tailgating, and not getting to eat lunch on Saturdays.  I was always starving after games.  Go NCAC!

oldguy

I agree with the fact that no Saturday lunches were tough.  The empty stomach at around noon helped to intensify the effect nervousness had on your gut as well.  Although, by the time the game was over, I was so tired and worn out that I couldn't eat till around 7 or 8.  Saturday nights were always fun though.  ;)

wally_wabash

I could care less about this kid's grades or test scores.  Let's be honest with each other here...the only reason this is an issue at all is because we know he had bad SAT scores.  The only reason we know anything about this kid's SAT scores is because Mark Simon did a feature on him.  The only reason Simon did a feature on him is because he transferred to Mount (there's no way this guy is on the Features radar had he transferred to Whittier).  The fact is that Mount is a lightning rod for this sort of criticism because of their success.  Until there's any real evidence of wrongdoing, we ought to let this go.

BashLaw,

Great post.  How I went four years without watching Div. I football is beyond me.  I watch OSU and other games of note religiously nowadays.

Funny stuff on the lunch thing.  Unlike oldguy though, I had no trouble eating once the game was over.

On the 'Gheny, Woo game it sounds like the Scots are catching the Gators not quite at full strength.  Hopefully they can take advantage and turn that into a victory. Go Scots!

gobash83

I am not sure that Wabash got to #1 in the polls during the '82 season.  At the end of the season, we were ranked in the top 5 but in those days only two teams per region went to the playoffs.  Ranked ahead of us were Augustana (who lost in the finals to D III drive-by West Georgia) and B-W (who ended the season as #1 and then lost to Auggie in the first round).  I have no doubt that Wabash should have made the playoffs that year and would have done well (I am biased, however).

Going into the 9th week of the season, I believe B-W was #1 but we were ahead of Auggie in the polls.  That week, we barely beat IWU (in one of the most exciting football games that I have ever seen).  We dropped afterwards as the result, rumor has it, of a vote of a certain former DPU AD.

All this highlights that today's system is much fairer to the players and the fans and the fact that, while entertaining, the polls are for generating good debate and nothing more.

Lancer,

I hope Woo could beat Gheny even without key injuries.  If woo wins, I don't want gheny guys coming along and blowing the same smoke that the Case guys were spewing!

DarkSide-D

Last week at the Case game, some of the guys and myself were discussing opposing teams facilities.  This included the fact the Wooster owns the worst visiting locker rooms in the conference.  While surfing the ESPN web site, I came across this.  I thought it was GREAT and that it should be shared.

That's a bad locker room.

Depauw has the worst visiting locker rooms on the planet.  Can you really call it a locker room?  Bathroom may be a better description.  Unrelated I know, but it's always worth noting something bad about Depauw.
