Frank -

In that case, in the old days, nothing in my office would get done!

wabco,

Have you seen a Wooster, Gheny, or Witt game yet this year?  If not than how do you know that Murry is as good as he was last year? Or that Wooster Pass D isn't improved?

I too think that Wabash is the team to beat but still don't know how they match up yet.  I think that if we look at stats we are in trouble because look at who Wabash has play.  Then look a who Gheny/Witt have played and it isn't apples to apples.

Poll notes...

d3football.com - Wooster cracks the top 25 at #24 this week.  Wabash's win was impressive enough to bump their vote total from 1 to a whopping 8 this week, good enough for 42nd.

AFCA Coaches Poll - Wooster moves up to 15(interrobang), Wabash moves up to 28th.

Massey has Wabash at 26 or 27 depending on how you read it, Wooster is at 47 or 55 depending on how you read it.

And what's up with the NCAC office this week?  It's Tuesday and there isn't an NCAC roundup or updated conference stats....I need my stats!

at that rate if (I said if) we go 10 - 0 we'll get up to 50 votes......which is almost in the D3 top 25.

:)

short - are you sitting down, good post.  I believe WabCo is speculating which is fun to do but we all know there is a lot of football to be played.  Statistically, Bash is ridiculous but I would agree it has something to do with their opponents.  On the flip side, there are some numbers that are pretty strong & obvious...

As I stated earlier, the caliber of play (TO THIS POINT) for Harbaugh has surprised many of us - he's been "off the charts" - in all areas of his game - accuracy, experience, composure, confidence, etc.  The way he has spread the ball around to his receivers is very impressive as well...how is this for balanced...these are freaky:

Kyle Piazza            16 rec  169 yards  10.6   1 TD  18 long  42.2/game
Geoff Walker          15 rec  277 yards  18.5   2  TD  46 long  69.2/game
Mike Russell           15 rec  233  yards  15.5   4  TD 56 long  58.2/game
Eric Summers         15 rec  199  yards  13.3   2  TD  58 long  49.8/game
Ray Green             13 rec  190  yards  14.6   2   TD  55 long  47.5/game

The "poor opponent theory" doesn't apply as much here with Wash U and OWU both having pretty good defenses.  Also, it's not like Harbaugh has thrown for 600+ versus a Kenyon or Hiram.

Bashbrother,

That depends on if you look at it as we gained 7 votes per week, or we get 7x last weeks total. We could have 56 votes next week if we use a multiplier.  ;) Be positive.

Good point.

I acutally like not being ranked.  In D3 rankings mean very little...It's all about the wins.

I truly hope we don't have any kind of let down this week against Oberlin.  I don't think the amount of leadership on this team will allow it.

It's not exactly apples to apples, short, but you can draw some conclusions.  Would Wabash's defensive stats be as unreal (and they are unreal) as they are had Wabash played Witt's schedule?  Probably not.  Would Wabash be surrendering over 500 yards per game and 40 points per game to those teams?  Not likely.  So the numbers are skewed a bit, yes, but even if you make a logical correction here, you can still draw the conclusion that Wabash has a pretty good defense while Wittenberg pretty much does not.

And it works with more than just the defense too.  You can find that Wabash is better than Witt in just about every offensive and defensive statistical category, even if you factor in the difference in schedules.  It's a fun game...you should try it.

Relax, Wally.  It's as you have said several times--Wooster on October 15 at their place.  We will need to be ready to show.  If we do, then those who are beginning to notice--even Pat Coleman and those who mirror his attitude--will have to admit that the L'il Giants not only have something, but are playing well enough both at home and on the road to merit recognition.  As the reigning NCAC champ, Wooster "harvests" until someone knocks them off.

wabco--I agree with you that Wabash has the best talent,  deep as well as experienced.  But it is C.C. and the rest of the coaching staff who will need to make sure we are honed and ready--one game at a time.  You got to love how relaxed everyone is, coaches and players alike.  The inventiveness last weekend in Delaware was great to see.

Oberlin in C-ville this week,  Wooster the next Saturday--can't wait!

Thanks Bashdad

The purpose of my post was to start up some comparison dialogue.  But ... I do believe what I posted.

As for Oberlin ... I do not look for Wabash to "Witt" them ... I see the score being 30 something to 7 or so.  Reason ... lets get some rest and reserve experience.  Get healthy for the haul which is coming.  Ibelieve there will be no let down but do plan to see lots of clean jerseys on Sat ... and that is good.  The "7 or so" will come as it did at OWU ... abnd that is ok.  Not as interested in zero on the scoreboard as I am in healthy players and experience.

Bashdad - I don't think Pat or others have an 'attitude' at all. They are neutral observers and last year's ending still rings with them.

Wabash got a big benefit of the doubt in the polls in '03, if you recall, and actually early on in '04 as well.

BD, I'm not worried about the polls.  They'll sort themselves out and even if they don't, 7-0 in NCAC play means we're in the playoffs regardless of where the pollsters have us.  I don't mean to insinuate here that Wabash is getting slighted...as I've said before on this board and in others, we don't have a cache of "benefit of the doubt" capital.  My guess is that the voters here are keeping an eye on Wabash, even if they aren't slotting us into their ballots.

Anyway, I was just reporting where NCAC teams were stacking up in the polls this week...nothing more, nothing less.

Wabco,

Why are you insinuating Witt ran up scores on bad teams?  Don't talk unless you were at the games.  Taking the starters out after the first quarter is not running up the score.  Also, taking out 2nd stringers in the 3rd quarter doesn't mean running it up either.  Sometimes the freshman are so hungry for playing time that they come in and play hard to try and show the coaches what they are made of.  Don't make false statements with nothing to back it up.

Dude, 1 to 8 votes is an 8X multiplier.  Weren't you an econ major?

And nice avatar :)

Li'l Giant

I was a piss-poor econ major. Ask anyone.

And thanks on the avatar.
