Whenever I was Wabash pep-band honcho, I always tried to make sure we only played when no action was going on, especially when Wabash had the ball.  I always assumed we could have a penalty applied to us, as our high school band had that happen once or twice for playing longer than the timeout.

Of course we kinda sucked, so playing very little was not only beneficial to the team, but to the poor people sitting near us.  Of course, I blame this suckage on Wally's inept cowbell playing  ;D

I have the memo - and I'm making an announcement on Saturday versus Oberlin.

Wally has a Fever!  And the only cure...IS MORE COW BELL

Wally, I hope next week you get all the cow bell you can handle.   ;)

At least Wally got an actual instrument. All I was allowed to do was bellow profanities.   :'(

Gobash,

You're bringing back some memories!  We actually played quite a bit during my time - 88-92.  I dare say we actually had some talent as well.  The band isn't nearly as prevalent now as it was "back in the day".  Good times, though!

BashDad

The Wabash pep band, small as it is, is always forgiven when a "sour" note crops up--the band makes a fine contribution that is an important part of the whole L'il Giant football Saturday.  Sometimes during fall break they have not been there and were missed!

Some national pub for Wabash (albeit a small bit)....

Wabash snuck into a paragraph in espn.com Page 2's Uni Watch column today....nice anecdote, although I'm not sure Uni Watch did their homework on the enrollment status of the guy who wrote in. :)

The Wabash blurb is toward the end of the column.

Once through an amplified microphone at an indoor basketball court in Greencastle, IN.  On senior night for Depauw.  How we didn't get thrown out of that one is beyond my comprehension.

No wonder Smeds has so much free time - he's on the 20 year plan! :D

Whatever the rules may be, I could not possibly find a band distracting were I playing football.  Who cares?  The best games are loud games.  I'd say the band just makes it a little more fun regardless of when they're playing.

Giving LG the mic at that hoops game in Greencastle was perhaps the best and worst ideas of all time...simultaneously.  I loved every horrifying minute of it.

Wally,

Another classic...BEST & WORST...was the Bell game where we were getting it handed to us in really bad weather down in Greencastle - mid 90's I believe.  Our crew ended up back in the RV and listened to the game on the DPU broadcast - wow was that brutal.  As the libations continued to help us bury our sorrows we became more and more agitated with the Dannie announcers - cause it was their fault we were losing!   ::).  It was probably their continued use of "Wallies" on the broadcast that set us over the edge.  ENTER the good/bad idea...we thought we'd call the press box to complain.  I have never laughed so hard when we would call (repeatedly where they would let it ring and ring) and hear the phone ring over the radio!  They had some poor student answering the phone (female - which made it worse!) - and you can imagine the quality of conversation and her desire to help our case.  I think that was the same year we went frat to frat, on our way out of town, asking guys to play us in a friendly game of football!  We didn't have any takers.  That RV ended up spending the night, right outside Harry's Chocolate Shop at Purdue!

Bashbacker and reality check:
Thank you for the clarification.  That does make sense - i.e. the key to this is the player touching the ground in the endzone since he did not have possession of the ball when he first entered it, unlike the running back as you correctly pointed out.  I'm sure most were aware of the differece about the one-foot rule vs. two in the pros and the other aspects, but certainly there has, at times, been confusion about the question I asked.  Not sure why since it is clear as you have explained.

However, reality check, friend I would just further comment/ask as to why are you surprised that a receiver couldn't be airborne for a full second before hitting the ground?  That is not impossible at all, granted not commom, but not impossible - I've seen it several times and I'm sure others have as well.  A player leaps up into the air in making the catch, and gets flipped upside down or is pushed further in the air (within the boundary of the endzone) before actually making contact and falling on the ground and or falling on top of another player (db) involved in the play.  It can happen in bounds of course as well.

Anyway, thanks to both of you for the clarification of the exact ruling.

I don't recall who had the idea of giving me the mic, but it was certainly a bad idea. Man, that brings back memories. I don't know how we didn't get banninated for that, either, but I'm glad we didn't. I feel sorry for everyone who had to hear whatever evil came out of my mouth.

BB16, that's a great story.
