The last team to win the conference with two losses? -- that would no one, as it has never happened before. Odds are, it's not going to happen this year, either.

Two conference losses and you're done.  Here's why.  Let's pretend for the sake of argument here that Allegheny loses to OWU on Saturday.  Allegheny now HAS to:
- win against both Wabash and Witt
- have Wabash and Witt lose twice
- have Wooster and OWU to lose three times (OWU has already lost once) because both of those teams hold a head-to-head tiebreak against the Gators

You can envision the analagous scenario for OWU should they lose on Saturday.

Without going through the iterations here, I'm guessing that all of those things can not possibly happen unless a team from the bottom half of the conference wins against the upper half and that has only happened one time in the last six years.  And even if this can happen without help from the bottom half, NCAC history tells us that it is very, very unlikely that our teams will beat up on each other enough to render everybody with 2-3 losses.  Somebody will emerge.

The fact is that both Allegheny and OWU are clinging to slim playoff chances as is.  Factoring in the head-to-head tiebreaks, OWU is effectively two games behind Wabash and Allegheny is effectively two games behind Wooster.  I'm not sure Wabash and/or Wooster are going to lose two conference games this year.

Should be a beautiful day for a game.

Our buddies at Hanover (get a defense, join a real conference, win a playoff game) are talking about the Witt/Hanover game in '02 over on the HCAC message board...stuff like HC was the best HCAC team in 10 years, the WR was in bounds - it was the wrong call, etc.  Pretty good reading...

Li'l Giant

I remember a few days after that game a Hanover supporter posted to the NCAC and HCAC boards a picture of the play saying that HC should have won. As I recall it didn't show the WR with possession of the ball nor did it show his feet on the ground and didn't show the sideline. Not the most persuasive of evidence. Anyone remember that photo besides me?

Yes, I absolutely remember that and I said the same thing. I believe it showed the receiver's feet were inbounds, but it very clearly showed lack of possession of the football.

Yet the local yokel paper cited the photo as clear proof of a bad call. I was thankful for the photo myself, because it made sure there was no doubt in my mind over the correct outcome of the game.

reality check

I checked out the Wabash.edu pic.  Good shot.

I also enjoyed reading about Metzelaar's road to the NFL coaching ranks.  A very interesting article; wish it went further into the situation.

Two questions after reading:

1.  Is Pete Metzelaars potentially the only D-III alum to score a TD in a Super Bowl?

2.  Is there any way to do a story on NFL coaches/administration that are former D-III players?

I know JCU has at least one in the pros in Josh McDaniels (former QB I believe).  Just seems like an interesting story in the offseason when we don't have games to talk about.

We did a story on the John Carroll alumni in coaching/scouting jobs a couple years back.

A story on everyone would be a massive undertaking -- there are quite a few, and I would be sure we would miss some.

I thought the post on the HCAC board about the Witt Hanover playoff game was meant tongue in cheek, though Im sure there are still some actual naysayers out there.

As a bit of poetic irony, Mike Leonards first win at HCAC Franklin came against NCAC OWU by the same final score.....
