Close win by Woo.  I tell you what, looks like this year is a rebuilding year after all.  By the way, who is this Dustin Shepard kid?  I haven't seen a frosh RB at Wooster run like him since Jeff Elser! :D

Both the letter in the Bachelor and the Details article paint an unrealistic picture of Wabash.  Both show Wabash as a sexist, barbaric campus that makes no apologies for these viewpoints.  While the DEtails article attempts to temper this picture by demonstrating the campus's self-awareness and attempts to educate, it utimately paints a narrow-minded picture of Wabash.

Neither piece realistically compares the Wabash campus to other campuses.  Currently at a very liberal grad school, I am surrounded by students who are much more sexist and narrow-minded than those I spent my time with at Wabash (who could probably be labeled the worst-offenders).  The bottom line is that 18 to 23 year old males as a whole do not treat women properly, but I would put a group of 18-23 year old Wabash men up against those at any other campus.

Our problem is that an all-male campus is ripe for this type of attack, for creating drama out of thin air.  At a campus such as Wabash where open forums and community discussion is so central to the education, this type of commentary occurs frequently (as it well should in developing a healthy sense of self awareness).  However, it troubles me when people use these things (letter to the editor, self-made video) not to better the school, but to promote their own selfish agendas (under the guise of humanitarianism).

Bottom line- the article and letter create controversy where there is none.  But this will always be the case, perhaps for the better, at an all-male institution.

BashLaw,

Thanks Double "D".  A lot better put, than what I wrote.  It just makes my blood boil.  I don't think any real Wabash man would condone any of these action.  I'm not saying all Wabash men are angels, but most know right from wrong.

Here's hoping the L'il Giants keep focus this week.  As always.

Oberlinparent,

A lot of what you complain about could be handled by more fans of Oberlin, Denison, Earlham, and Hiram coming on here and talking about their teams. This year, with the improvement of Kenyon, we've seen some of their fans come on here and get in the discussion. Until that happens this is going to be a three or four team disucssion depending on who the two front runners are.

I'm glad you have decided to post and hope you will give us the insight into Oberlin football we don't have.

You're dangerously close to contradicting yourself, bro.  You really rock on thesis statements though...

Oh, and I don't think the Details piece is skewed at all.  In fact, it all but exalts Wabash and leaves out any discussion on substantial negatives of that kind of environment.  Your defensiveness is resounding.  I'd be quite anxious to hear of the "selfish agenda"  that you see boiling underneath Russ's video--a most profound act of bravery, and something I'm wholeheartedly proud of.  Did you see it?

Li''l Giant,
First I was not complaining.  I was stating that there are alot of good players in the NCAC. Oberlin has a stiff Defense but because there are on the field alot the numbers get run up.  There are loosing two defensive standouts; Shawn Brunner, and Vance Murphy.  Offensive they are loosing three wide receivers: Zach Lewis, Chad Kutting, Andrew Crosby. The Offensive Line they are loosing: Joe Dehondt, Cole Price.  The 06' team will have much experience.  The 05' team had Keyon beat, Wooster and both losses coming by one.  We lost to Case by three.  This Oberlin team has came a long way in the last four years.  Once they start winning the close ones, they will be ok.  Go ask the Wooster players if there were in a phyical game last week.

Oberlinparent,

You are correct.  The Oberlin program has become very respectible.  Plus I enjoy visiting your campus.  Your visitor bleachers suck, but your campus is great.  If you are ever in Oberlin.  May I suggest you take in a movie.  You can take a date, and get snacks for less than $15.00, or a least you could a couple of years ago.  As always.

I don't think the letter was serving any selfish purpose except illuminating some things that need to be addressed.

Some of the things mentioned are totally unacceptable and would get someone fired in a heartbeat in the real world.

I don't think one should say the woman has an "agenda."  That letter was signed by 21 professors (including 5 Chairs and a Director of a Center) and 6 staff people.  16 of the 26 signees were men.

More disturbing than what was in the opening paragraph was what was in the penultimate paragraph: that faculty members were afraid to sign the letter because they feared reprisals.  This situation is most unhealthy.  For the sake of the Wabash people and their college, I hope this situation gets cleared up.

wally_wabash

Or maybe faculty members didn't sign on because they think this is much ado about (mostly) nothing.  There are some issues raised that clearly need to be addressed, but I don't think this is as huge a deal as the writer makes it out to be.  In either case, I'm also not sure Post Patterns is the proper forum for this discussion.

WallyFS4,

The prices at the Movies are still the same in Oberlin, so make sure you take a movie in next year when you go.  The Visiting bleachers at roped off so im happy to tell you that you get to sit with the nice people of Oberlin.

Since this is not the right forum, I'll save any more conversation on the article and letter for another time and place.

However, it is good to mention Russ's video as it is a testament to some of the quality student athletes at Wabash and in the NCAC.  Its neat to see a full-time athlete who busts his butt in the classroom.  Russ is a great guy and is immensely bright.  I'd say that his intellectual curiousity is refreshing, and I did appreciate his video.  It was a great piece of cinematography and well done.  I don't agree with everything presented, but a key component of the liberal arts is seeing things from different perspectives.  Russ presented a valid perspective in a well thought out and effective manner.

That's it from me.  Question about practice technique at BAsh this year?  Is the team still going full pads only on Tuesday and Wednesday, half pads Thursday, and just shell on Monday and Friday.  Or has CC cut back to just one day of full pads because of injuries and the senior class?  Just wondering.

BashBacker#16

BashLaw,

I believe Bash is on the same practice routine as in year's past.  We have had a relatively good year pertaining to injuries (knock on wood) - let's hope that continues throughout the year.  Were you thinking CC had backed off?

BashBacker#16

OberlinParent,

Oberlin's program has come a long way - they've done a nice job and have some good players.

Why the jab at Wabash posters?  Just because there are a lot of Wabash fans on this site does not mean we think we are better then others...  Any examples that you could cite?  Maybe if you provided some specific examples, we would have a better understanding of your point.  Lastly, with regards to your remarks about Oberlin's players...I hope you didn't take offense to the posts last week when Harbaugh was shafted for NCAC Player of the Week - that was no slam on Shubert whatsoever - just the award itself and the criteria.
