From the C-ville's The Paper..."Quarterback Russ Harbaugh continues his assault on the record book. His 271 yards gives him 2,160 yards on the season which is the 10th best single season mark. He is averaging just over 300 yards per game. At that rate he will break the single season record of 2,954 yards set by Jake Knott in 2002.

Harbaugh is third on the career passing list with 5,757 yards. He has thrown 46 touchdowns and just 20 interceptions. Harbaugh has two interceptions in 226 passes this season."

At the beginning of the season, who would have thought Russ would be on track to break Knott's single season record???  What a season thus far...

Wally - it looks like nice weather in Meadville on Saturday...at least for game day.  Lets hope the turf is not too bad from the week's rain.

Fresh from the Meadville Tribune:

WEATHER
Wed ... rain 50%i
Thur ... rain 50%
Fri ... no rain forcast
Sat ... (very unMeadville weather) Sunny and 52 degrees

Matlak quote:

"I told the guys; it's the same team we played last year that we beat 16-10."

NCAC stats for 'Gheny (per the vaunted research staff of the Meadville Tribune)
* 3 rd ranked rusher in Tarquinio
* 2nd ranked receiver in Geiser
* 2nd ranked kick returner in Geiser
* 2nd ranked punter in Black

Beating Hiram ended the longest losing (or loosing ... if you are Oberlinparent) streak since 1953.

All 'Gheny has left is to beat / upset / knock off #1, per Meadvill T.

BB16,

Good to hear the weather is cooperating.  Hope everyone is focused.  Gheny might be the best 1 win team in the country, but I still believe as long as we don't beat ourselves we will have a nice bus ride home.

I know Gheny had a lot of rain 2 years ago.  It was the tractor pull they had at the Swamp on Friday night that really pissed me off. :D

You are 100% correct about Harbaugh.  He has really come into his own.  He has always shown signs of greatness.  It is amasing what confidence will do for a player.  As always.

Weather and Field Conditions...

I live in PA, in Harrisburg, and other than the baseball field here in our stadium, I don't think there's a green patch of grass that has had an athletic contest on it over the past two weeks that's not chewed up to hell.

I'm afraid that even if the weather holds on Saturday in Meadville, it's going to be ugly, ugly, ugly for the field conditions there.  It's pretty ugly here at all the local high schools and colleges. There was a picture in the Sunday paper of a DIII game near here, and it was HORRIBLE. It looked like the "swamp" did two years ago, ankle deep in mud/water.

buffetfan,
What paper had the picture?  Are there any photos of Gheny's field - recent?  Just curious.

As a Gheny player, wouldn't that get old playing in the stuff for every home game?  Any Bash fans, remember the loss at NAIA Cumberland (KY) in 1988...I believe 15-10.  Ironically, that Bash team was also 7-0!  That was the worse field I have ever played on (by far) and I was told by one of the Bash coaches that Gheny's swamp (2 years ago) was far worse?  I can't imagine that.

That would be great if they moved the game to the H.S. field mentioned earlier with field turf.  I still think that is wishful thinking.

• Everyone vote Brett Elliott for Heisman

Did everybody see this on the front page?  If not check it out and vote!  It could do nothing but help DIII football.

BB,

I actually was thinking about how this week's game parallels the 1988 team with a 7-0 team traveling to a mud pit.  Certainly hope the results are better this time.  I also hope the result of the Bell game is better than that year as well.

wally_wabash

This is most certainly NOT the same team that Allegheny beat 16-10 last year.  Not even close.  But keep that dream alive, Coach Matlak...if it's going to make your 1-6 record easier to stomach.

I believe CC is quoted as saying that Allegheny is the best 1-6 team of all time in some article I read this week.  He's probably not far off.  Wabash has some loose ends to tie up with the Gators...last year's game was awful from start to finish, in all phases from coaching to play execution.  In this season that has been centered around redemption, don't expect Wabash to rest on their laurels.  There's still something to prove this week.

Two words: Bender. Field.  It's not being used, it's not going to be chewed up, it's the BEST option for this game's venue.  Not exploring this option is simply foolish on the part of Allegheny College.

I suppose everything I've ever posted in here concerning Robertson Field has been simply ignored so everyone could continue bitching bitching and bitching some more about the field.

BB16,
As a former Gheny player, I can tell you the field was NEVER as bad as it was 2 years ago.  I was at that game for homecoming and I will admit the conditions were absolutely horrendous.  But at the same time, the rain never poured for two solid weeks like it did that year and keep in mind, a game was played on that same soaked field the week before.  When you play a game during a monsoon and the rain doesn't stop the entire following week, it doesn't give you much of a chance to clean it up, does it?

Muddy or not, it was OUR field and I loved it and still do.

Wally,
My post concerning the efforts to correct the drainage problem at Robinson may have gone unnoticed during a period of high traffic in here, so I'll repeat them.  After the '03 season when the field couldn't handle any water, Allegheny brought in some guys from Penn St. (home of the best damn grass field in the country, period) and they discovered that a layer of clay had built up beneath the field, which prevented the ground from being able to soak up the water.  Holes were drilled through the clay so that drainage wouldn't be as much of a problem.  I have had very few opportunities to go back to Meadville the last couple of years, so I can't say for certain how effective this has been, but rest assured the situation was addressed.  Also, keep in mind the gators were on the road last week so the field didn't take the beating that it did the week before Wabash in '03.  The field might not be a picture of perfection, but i'm confident it won't be a repeat of '03.  What you should understand about Bender Field is that Meadville schools use it for EVERYTHING.  Pop Warner, Junior High, JV, High school football AND soccer sometimes.  Saturdays are usually booked for something or other.  That's why the field turf was installed in the first place.  Old Bender Field made Robertson Field look like the Field of Dreams (just a different sport of course  :) )

To sum it all up, I consider Wabash to be heavy favorites coming into this week, but don't criticize Matlak for trying to motivate his team.  Same team or not, I'd feel the same way playing a team that we beat the year before.  When a team is 1-6, they need to believe they can win before they will.

I won't be making it up this weekend but if anyone needs directions or general info about meadville I'm glad to help.  Once Saturday arrives, its down with the little giants, though.  Save travelling all.
