interesting.

Interesting, but based on your responses to Joel, apparently not.
Wanting to beat Ohio St. or win the Monon Bell or whatever floats your particular boat doesn't mean you don't also want to be #1 in the region or win the national title.  Joelmama's queries have always been of the either/or variety , and the answer seems unanimous that it's the Bell before the title.  But that (obviously) does not mean that both would not be better.

Look at it this way:  when (if) I get to heaven, I want to be with Hedy Lamarr.  I also want to be with Myrna Loy, and if that means I can't be with Hedy Lamarr, so be it.  But both would be decidedly better. ;)

What, you have something against Ingrid Bergman, the most beautiful of all? And what, exactly, would you do with both Loy and Lamarr?

Respond soonest.

David,

Unless you are sicker and/or older than I think you are, they would each be well into their 100s when you get there - or do you get to specify 'in their prime' in your fantasy world?  ;)

[I've got dibs on Sophia Loren - had a crush on her since I was about 10!] ;D

Warren, there's not enough red dots in the system to answer that question.  :D

Today is Hedy Lamarr's birthday, BTW.  She'd have been 92.  :'(

And, besides, how would it look it Pat had to ban a HoFer!

I can't decide between Trigger and Champion!

Ah, for me, give me Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity, or Merle Oberon in Wuthering Heights.

That be OLD SCHOOL!

There are others besides the OAC who do have football programs that warrant recognition.

You are free to read and interpret words as you choose. As the author of the words you chose to comment on, I can assure you they had zero, zip, nada to do with the OAC.

joelmama: The only D3 Championship that pit two teams from the same conference, as far as I know, was the Witt - BW game back in 1977 or '78. If there will be 7-8k at this weeks game, maybe a National Title game of the Tigers & LG's would bring over 10 thousand.

That was basically my point.   I am still not sure why the symbolism of the Bell is more valuable than the symbolism of the national championship.  The bell is recognized and revered by the followers of two schools.  All 230 schools recognize and desire a natiaonal championship.  And that doesn't include the fact that I was offereing the chance to do a monkey stomp of the hated opponent on national tv.

smedindy

Well, we have been on national TV, and are now (at least on DirecTV- Channel 321).

joelmama

You may call that national TV but a few million homes versus 90% of the country is a little different.  You knew what I meant.

ESPN2 in 1994 - and it was a sweet, sweet victory!

ABC in 1977, another sweet, sweet win.

Frankly, we could beat them in front of five people and it'd still be sweet.

I understand how a National Championship would be tarnished by a loss to your arch rival in the same season.  If the Buckeyes won a National Title but lost to Michigan, it wouldn't have the same luster.

However, if OSU met Michigan again in the championship game and beat them, it would regain the luster, since they beat Michigan in the more important game.

DarkSide-D

Here's a suggestion,

How about Bash win against DePauw, thus putting the NCAC champion in the national playoffs undefeated.  Then play each and every single team along the way to Salem.  Once they reach Salem, then we could discuss the national title for Bash, and the NCAC.

wally_wabash

And your scenario works for Wabash/Depauw as well, oldguy, provided that the Monon Bell is at stake in the playoff game and I don't think that this has ever been discussed.  Possession of the Monon Bell is the most important thing.  Beating Depauw to win a national championship would be very awesome, but it wouldn't be the same if the Bell weren't coming back to C'ville along with the championship trophy.
