Congrats to Wabash and its staff for their all-conference selections.

I too was surprised by how few awards were given to Woo this year.  Granted Mizak was returning from an injury, but to not make even honorable mention, wow!  Also, with the meltdown that occured after Schaf left, I would think his presence was essential for the team.  I am surprised he didn't even get honorable mention.  Granted, he didn't finish the year, but he is one of the top QBs in the NCAC.

To the comment about Shep not deserving the Newcomer of the Year award because he didn't start all the games.  Sutton didn't start all his games his first year, and he won the award.  Sure, Shep is no Sutton, but the fact remains that just because an individual doesn't start all his games he shouldn't recieve the award.  The impact Shep made for his team, giving them new life towards the end of the season, when woo finally started to run a lil more, is good enough reason to give him the award.  He is an impact player, and with a good offseason, he will be real good.

I was also dissappointed with the lack of PT for the firstyears.  This is not saying they coaching staff simply didn't play them.  I know Woos staff will play whoever they believe is the best for the job, no matter what their year.

I agree, I think coach Stanley.  I don't look for them to make a run for the title next year.  Next year, teams will know what they have.  Kenyon finally finished at the top of the conference, which means they will be placed in a situation they are not used to.  Next season, they will have a target on their back, and teams will be better prepared for them.  I doubt teams will go into kenyon week with the attitude that "its just kenyon."

I am not surprised about McConnell's not being on the first team list.

With that, lets go Bash.  Take it Cap

If Mizak and Schaffer weren't honorable mention, then I don't think they were nominated by the coach.

I understand that Smed,

There was one guy who made First Team last year, and two who made second team defense. On the offensive side, there was one First Teamer and two Second Teamers, and two honorable mentions on both sides the ball.  All these guys returned.  For woo to have only Two first teamers, no second teamers, and two Honorable mentions this year, I think its a bit odd.  Thats the point I was trying to make.

thanks wally and bashdad. I would guess it would be safe to assume a similar style game v capital. 2 good defenses, etc. it appears to me capital's defense is better than depauw (based on personal observation of only capital, statistics/ranking, and opponents).

it is my expectation there will be a fierce defensive battle saturday and the team that makes the fewest mistakes and capitalizes (bad diction) on any mistakes will come out the winner.

I have a feeling the game will come down to kicking.  Which means its not a good feeling.  Watching the Wabash kickers during several pre-games leaves me dissapointed.

In fact I would argue that our kicking game has always been terrible during the Creighton era.

Not surprised at all about lack of picks from Woo.  They simply did not play well and don't forget that none of their 6 wins was against an over 500 team.  The majority of their plus stats came against weak teams.

Holmes (QB) from Witt only played in 4 games – how did he get a mention?

                            GOOD LUCK BASH!!!!

I can't say I really agree with this.  Look at Kenyon's games.  They start 0-3, so maybe their first conference game v. Oberlin the Yeomen think "its just Kenyon," but I don't think they're good enough to ever think that about anyone.  Next up are your boys DD, who probably were thinking that when they were 23rd in the country or whatever.  After beating Wooster, they play a winless Gheny team that is desperate for a win and therefore almost certainly not thinking "just the Lords this week."  Next comes OWU, who may or may not have thought that, but either way whipped Kenyon.  Then come Earlham and Hiram, two teams badly in need of wins who more likely would be thinking along the lines "here's the best chance for a win this year, better give it our best."  Finally comes Denison, the rivalry game, not one taken lightly on either side.  I don't think Kenyon snuck up on anyone except for Wooster, and saying they did takes away from their season.  I also kind of doubt they're going to have a huge target on their backs next year, because after all, "they're just Kenyon."

Superflytb9,

Your right, the first year was the worst.  After that, it improved 10 fold.  Still holding a grudge?  You and Bevo need to get a room.  Should we call you Fly or Finkle (laces out Marino).  By the way.  When did you get out of jail, hadn't heard from you for a long time. :D :D  Just kidding.  As always.

kcreds,
What I said is what I and others have said all year. Your defense was very good and your offense was not. Long drives against mediocre teams mean nothing. Against Witt and Wabash you scored 16 points. And had little offense those games. What were the combined records of the teams you beat? Against Wooster you scored only 3 tds with numerous opportunities handed to your offense. And our defense was not very good this year.
And what team awards did OWU win? I think you finished tied for third. Wing-t or no wing-t. My point was that evidently your offense was not on par with your defense. And the all league selections suggest just that. When we had the talent last year we won out. Just like Wabash did this year.  When you have the talent you gotta win.

I thought Olmy did quite well that first year, obviously I know someone who would have done much better but who cares.  You don't agree that the kicking game has consistently sucked?  Even with Server it wasn't that good. Sure he hit a couple of crucial kicks but that's like dessert for most kickers, it's your favorite part of the meal.  Missing PATs is flat out unacceptable! I'm relatively positive I could train a one legged orangutan to hit PATs.  Yet Wabash kickers consistently falter.

nike: I can't believe your hostility toward OWU. Are they getting more respect than you think they deserve? Are you mad because you stated Wooster was definitely going to beat OWU and as it turned out that Wooster was never in that ballgame? Is it because you really hate the wing-t? Are OWU fans real obnoxious? I have never given OWU more credit than they deserve but I will give them the credit they have earned. Just for you, 5 out of 7 wins were against .500 or above teams. Their loss to Thiel, a second round playoff team, was only by 3 pts. and OWU scored 36 in that game at Thiel. OWU averaged 23.6 points a game, compared to their competition, 19.1. I'd say that the offense might have done a little. Not very many NCAC teams scored very much on Wabash and Witt this year. I say Wabash and Witt showed good defenses rather than OWU had a poor offense. Okay, you don't like the wing-t, we all know it so get over it. Aueagle doesn't like it either and he is a Bishop fan but he doesn't get on here and dis OWU every chance he can get because of it. I like Wooster and maybe someday you can like OWU.  :-*

DarkSide-D

You're correct KC!  What the heck was I thinking...

I didn't say Kenyon snuck up on EVERYONE.  Wooster, Yes.  Gheny, perhaps.  By the time Kenyon played OWU and Dennison, Kenyon had already made clear that there were finishing in the top tier this year.  Teams at the top, don't sneak up on anyone.  At the time of Woo and Gheny, everyone still thought Kenyon waas the same ol bottom feeder.

superflytb9,

Forgive and forget.

Do you have any numbers to back up your kicking claims.  Aside from the year I played for CC money, I have not seen enough of the kicking game to make a claim on its strength.  On a side note, I do rember a certain "sarting" kicker missing quite a few under Carlson's campains.

Sincerely,
you know who I am.

wally_wabash

For what it's worth, Wabash hasn't missed a kick (PAT or FG) since the Allegheny game.  That's 17 straight kicks (14 PATs and 3 FGs).  Whatever was going wrong earlier in the season seems to have been corrected.

In the "for what it's worth" dept. for the other side, CAP's kicker was named first team all-OAC kicker and was basically the reason that the Crusaders beat a certain team I am rather fond of in Ada.
