Yes Scotty, That is great news.  I just hope he didn't pull a Clarett in the off season and add about 40 pounds and lose about .3 seconds off his forty.   ;)

I think Adams will definately help the Scots out next year by adding a little bit more experiance to the D and special teams.

Just some general comments from "an outsider' following interesting observations.  The accomplishments of the Kenyon swimming program are truly amazing.  I knew of a couple of people who went there for that and had a great experience.  Kenyon's swimming program is well above many DI programs in the same sport.  I also know of a highly regarded historian and current administrator who graduated from there who is not of the usual liberal mindset that you describe for us and certainly know about there and absolutely is present there.

That same, albeit erroneous, mindset regarding potential reasons for elimination of a football program was attempted at Oberlin back in the late '70's as I'm sure you know.  Thankfully, however, they never succumbed (and hopefully Kenyon never will either) to the folly that Swarthemore exhibited and that which the Univ of Chicago did way back in 1939 (although the latter redeamed themselves in this "new era" ;)).

Hopefully, with some start of success that Stanley has had, Kenyon can have a respectable program even with the high academic standards it has and savors.  If Northwestern in the Big 10 can do it, no reason why Kenyon can't at the DIII level.  Thanks for your insight from someone who knows about the situation down there.  Very interesting.

KC - Even mainstream sports media has noted Kenyon's amazing swimming prowess, so they are not off on some island amassing this amazing record.

I think the entire NCAC is a testament to academics and athletics, as almost every school is good in something!

Pretty interesting rumors out of Butler today that they have hired Jeff Voris, head coach at Carroll College and a DePauw alum. 15-34 career record! Was also a finalist for the DPU job the last 2 times it opened??? I can't imagine there are many Butler alums "high fiving" about this hire. Good guy, great player, but interesting hire...

Bashbacker & Smed,

While Jeff Voris might not have done much in terms of wins & losses yet, he is a high quality coach.  From what I understand, Carroll does not give much institutional support to the athletic programs and really ties their hands in some ways particularly with regards to recruiting.

I would expect him to do well at Butler.  He is smart, tough, demanding, and a leader.  If he turns Butler's program around, then I would expect DePauw to consider him more seriously for the next hire.

Werner99,

Carroll didn't provide much administrative support to the football program...what do you think Butler will provide???  Voris is a quality guy and was a great player but this job is about as gross as it gets with the state their program is in.  I am not saying he won't get it done, just that he has an incredibly long road ahead of him.  Let's not kid ourselves, not many guys went after this job who had stellar records/backgrounds.  This is not my statement but a post from another website (www.footballscoop.com) about the Butler job... "They have interviewed 8 or 9 offered at least 2 and both have turned it down, some have pulled out after the interview. This is a bad job and with things the way they are at BU you cannot win. Vince Lombardi couldn't take this and turn it around." --I have not idea who said that but it says a lot.

Good luck to old #7.

It's even going to get tougher at Butler with Marian coming on board with 24 scholarships (or 48 half-scholarships).

Recruiting in central Indiana just became a little more challenging for non-scholarship/partial-scholarship football players.  Rebuilding Butler's program will not be easy under these circumstances by any means.

Nevertheless, I think Coach Voris certainly has the capability to make the program respectable.  I would expect that, at the end of the day, Butler alums will be pleased with the work he does and how he represents the school and football program.

Anyone - In regards to the the general topic of various coaching changes you've been discussing, I saw some mention (somewhere) that one of the DIII head coaching jobs payed only $48,000 per year (plus benefits of course).  I know about the usual compensation for assistant positions (both full-time and part-time) at these schools, however, that seems kind of low.  Does anyone know if that is just for the coaching responsibilities and as such, would a head coach be paid more above that for other responsibilities such as teaching or other administrative duties?  If not, seems it would be difficult to survive/make a living for a coach with a young wife and family.  Still, one has to start somewhere I guess (and most h.s. positions would be even less).  Just curious as to your thoughts/opinions/insight, etc.

Also, hopefully, he didn't start mugging people behind local bars.

I can take a joke DD, but just remember...He who lives in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

There were more thugs and punks on your Wooster teams of the late 90's under Barnes than any other team I have encountered in D-III.

lancer98, very nice link, thank you. If I could give you positive karma I would.

Old guy, ????  I'm not sure who or what you are referring to, but I have first hand knowledge of those teams.  Very few punks, if any, and no thugs that I recall, unless you count Lancer!!! I don't recall any player suspensions either, unlike some other teams from that era...

Of course, you could be operating under the maxim that in order to beat a team with a lot of thugs/punks, a team must have more thugs/punk, which I guess would follow that Wooster had more punks/thugs than Witt in 97 and Gheny in 99.  However, that would mean Witt in 96,98 and 99 and Gheny in 96, 97, and 98 and OWU in 99 had more punks/thugs than Wooster.  If that's the case, Wooster would rank below Gheny and Witt in "thugery" during that era, but higher than everybody else in the conference.  Its not like we're talking about "The U" or "Free Shoes University" here with Witt...seriously, I'm curious why you make that statement?

oldguy

I had first hand knowledge of those teams as well.  And by no means am I saying "all" the Wooster players or even "most" of them.  Witt hasn't had any more suspended players than Wooster either.

My point was directed at the joke itself.  Yes its a joke, but all jokes tend to show an underlying belief by the joke teller.  I'll admit, Witt has had some hot-heads on its teams that would get the occasional personal foul.  But no more than Wooster ever did.  And I'm not telling a joke about a team, when my team has acted the same way.

A good analogy would be, if I (being a Buckeye fan and realizing the off-the-field issues they have had of late), made a joke about Tennessee's or South Carolina's off-the-field problems.  It just doesn't make much sense.

Again, I realize its just a joke, but I was simply stating, be careful of making off-the-cuff comments when it can come back at you.
