For the record, Matt Walker NEVER was the starting QB for DePauw - I think he held for PATs and maybe a clipboard.  The DPU story said he was a former starting QB - hmm?

This looks like a start for Matt Walker:

Not sure why you'd assume you're more of an expert on DePauw starting quarterbacks than DePauw is.

I thought that too, Pat.  But the two-deep from the game notes for that week say that he was the backup.

http://www.depauw.edu/ath/football/1998/98fbweek2.pdf

The evidence seems to be inconclusive...either way, it doesn't look like Walker was a starting qb in the way one would assume based on the way the release reads.

Well, I believe the same SID has been there throughout. I would take his word for it on this one.

If someone assumes from the release that the guy started his entire senior season then they are doing just that, making an assumption. I would say if you read "was a starter at quarterback as well as a special teams player" then you should be able to draw the accurate conclusion. Special teams player wouldn't be mentioned otherwise.

I would also think it would be clear to anyone who's followed Division III sports closely that a two-deep, especially in Week 2, is pretty nebulous and what's typed up on Tuesday doesn't always match what takes the field on Saturday.

HoosierQBScout,

Nice work brother in breaking that story.  Wow - that is freaking incredible.  Scotty you were dead on, nice job to you too.  For the record, Matt Walker NEVER was the starting QB for DePauw - I think he held for PATs and maybe a clipboard.  The DPU story said he was a former starting QB - hmm?

What a mess!  He's not ready, I don't care how "good a guy he is" - he is a college baseball coach!  Also, what a whacked staff too with the recent hires, do you think the newly hired assistants will check out too?  Wouldn't you love to see & hear the first staff meeting.  "Well guys, today I want to work on 1st and 3rd situations...oh wait, I mean bunt defenses, no I mean..."

I wonder if this will interfere with Walker's Summer baseball career for the mighty Crawfordsville Eagles?

I wonder if they still have DICK?   ;D

Bashbacker,
Having played both football and baseball for Coach Walker, I can assure you he is up to the task.  His knowledge of the game of football and his coaching abilities are superior to many.  In my opinion, he may be better with football than baseball.  I'm not sure what this means for wabash football since I do not believe he has EVER lost a game to you in baseball as a coach (I could be wrong on that, but i'm about 99% sure I'm correct).

BashBacker#16...
Thanks for the props...some unanswered questions... (1.) obviously, what conflict(s) led to Rogers' resignation (2.) note the wording in DePauw's release...Walker "will guide the team during the 2006 season"...while he's not termed interim, there doesn't seem to be a long term feel to this and (3.) do you think this turmoil will prompt some recruits who had opportunities elsewhere to reconsider? I know D III is generally about quality of the school first and football second (as it should be) ...but would be interested to know what impact if any that might haveon the incoming class...and the ability to get talented kids these next few years...will be interesting to watch...

I don't see the sats page as conclusive that he started.  No S/L that I see in the stats (and in my experience with CWRU that is one of the least accurate stats reported)...threw the most passes?yes..was in the 2ndQ?yes...started? not conclusive.

He started some games...I believe he and another guy split time in a dual qb system.  Why does this matter anyway?  There are many successful head coaches out there that never played a snap of college football.

wally_wabash

It's a shame for Depauw and Coach Walker that Bell games aren't played on the diamond.  I'm not sure his record vs. Wabash is going to make a difference.

Benbraddock ... too bad the game is now football and not baseball.

Spud Dick?  Can you play baseball?  Trinity ... you just won the conference and an automatic bid ... without taking a snap.  Rose ... you should have held off a year.  And, Spud - boy"  YOU can hone your position skill from a sometime, maybe, kinda .... Yess Bob Barker ... your former "starting QB" for DePauw!!!

Hollett Stadium ... November 11, 2006 ... a place to be.

Hmmmmm.  I suppose this shows a certain lack of respect for your opponent ... oh well.

TOP FIVE Reasons Depauw cannot keep a coach lately

5.    Unlike my dog, they never learned how to stay.  ;)
4.    Greencastle rush hour traffic
3.    The Bell Game is on the opening day of Deer Season every year
2.    The coaches quickly discover that unlike what they were told in the
interview...Depauw is not in the Big Ten.
1.    They recruit their butts off and end up with Dick  ;D

I must be getting soft, but I actually feel for the seniors.  Four coaches in four years?  Talk about snake-bitten.

(self-inflicted slap to face)

OK, I'm over it now.  What in the he** in going on down there?  How can they talk to potential recruits with a straight face if questions arise about program stability?  It's a testament to their players that they have remained competitive the last few years, but sooner or later this has to catch up to you.

wabco

Is it too late for recruits to redirect to their - NOW - first choices?

I think Wabash's class is closed and has been since at least May.

How would you like to have just worked through a very hard choice of schools (seems to me ... choosing DePauw would always be a very hard choice) and then find that "your" coach of one year who has represented great things will happen ... is now GONE-O at a time leaving no possibility of anything else happening except to promote from within a person who was there when the now GONE-O was chosen over him in the first place.
