Joelmama:  I think the lines from the Blues Brothers are as follows:  She (sometimes referred to as "the mystery woman") says:  "You miserable slug! You think you can talk your way out of this?  You betrayed me."  Jake responds:  "No I didn't.  Honest . . .I ran out of gas.  I had a flat tire.  I didn't have enough money for cab fare.  My tux didn't come back from the cleaners [recall that she is outraged because he stood her up at their wedding, I think].  An old friend came in from out of town.  Someone stole my car.  There was an earthquake.  A terrible flood.  Locusts.  It wasn't my fault, I swear to God."

Thanks,  I thought the "sun was in my eyes" was in there somewhere but I could be wrong.  I guess the next time I have a few minutes I need to do a search on Carrie Fisher/John Belushi to see if I am mistaken.

Staying with the original theme, track three Vulgar Display of Power.  Especially like the part where law school is disparaged, even if Howard Schnellenberger say you should only listen to female vocals pregame.

Look out for the Big Red in '06.  They are currently going through 2.9 million dollars in renovations to their field.  Not to mention they have a very good recruiting class coming--maybe Coach Fletcher's best yet.  Don't be surprised if they compete for a conference title soon and very soon.  I feel they have a chance to become the next Capital--a program that improved because of appealing facilities.

That is the first time I heard that new facilities will make a team better.

Thought Denison had one of the nicest fields in all the NCAC already.   Seemed like the facilities were fairly modern, though didnt see the weight room.  The lockerrom assigned to Witt was fairly plush and assumed that giant building trekked from was the Gambier version of a HPER.  Really liked the feel of Piper Field.

Joel,  think improving facilities too much can coddle players if anything.  Generally, the more rank the weight pit the more rank the attitude of the football team.  Witt has at least made major capital renovations in a new fitness facility that is more geared for the general student body, while retaining a separate weight and training facility for the football team.

Never quite understood why Denison wasnt competing for the conference title in the past.  The players hit and ran pretty well, but there seemed to be a lack of cohesion, not to mention a little lapse in blocking that led to big plays defensively.  Strange, considering seemed to have the biggest offensive line in the 90s.

While the Kenyon comments may be made or received tongue in cheek, very well could play a role in the eventualities.  Kenyon puts together three more seasons like this past one, and the conference will start rearranging the official pecking order.  Pulling for Denison and OWU to keep them in check this season.

Wabash's new fitness center, open to all in the college community (no facility is strictly for athletes' only, as it should be) opened about the same time that they started to contend for NCAC championships, though!

Get the gist of whats being said here, but an all male student body probably puts a different perspective on the whole curls for the gurls bias.  There is a time for working out and a time for training.  Whats the difference?

Working out is curls for the gurls, ellipticals, upright rows and such...

Training involves those things that are generally foreign to a non-athlete.  Dont know if there is a prohibition on regular students using the old weightroom currently used by the athletes at Witt, but to be sure, the average Joe doesnt have much use for a power racks and clean/snatch platforms.

Generally a nice mirror and some coeds make for nice social hour workouts, but theres no risk of that in Crawfordsville.

Please dont take this as one of those Wabash all male slights as is par for the course, just being real.  Wabash probably has a high enough participation rate in athletics coupled with the all male population that the quote is actually just a directed slight.

The new workout facility at Witt  appears to be just that, a workout facility so Chet can look good for spring break and Buffy can pose in the Hamptons.

By far and away, the nicest training (slash workout) facility seen is in Madison Indiana.  Hanover has more Olympic weightlifting platforms than seen outside the OTC, not to mention an indoor track...  Another nice feature is the compatmentalization of the different apparatus to maintain the decorum discussed above.... Was actually reminiscing about the old basement weightroom at Hanover in the earlier post.  Wonder if the football team still uses that facility, certainly nobody used it before.  Buffy wouldnt have been caught dead in that rank pit.

and now back to Pumping Iron with Arnold....

I think the main motivation to work out for most guys is peer pressure.

At MUC an alum I went to school with made a couple of big piles of cash and donated some of it to the school to do several things with.  One of those was build a great workout facility right next to the football stadium.  It too is also open to all but as is true at many schools the sheer number of football players makes it seem like their facility.  And it is totally first class from what I saw.

Kenyon's facility is very state of the art,but I have to agree with the traditions,of the old dank, dark weightrooms of the past! Kenyon has a chance to be a pretty good team in 06. What has held the lords back, is the Admin: on the hill. In the 80s if the Lords were 500, they were happy, so they cut the next years recruiting classes numbers. With this new group of coaches, that won't except mediocrity, and a recruit class that has some good athletes. Kenyon might do better than 6-4, plus I don't beleive most people take the lord's serious,if you asked a Wooster fan, he would say backup Qb, bad field etc. Only time will tell, but I have watched the Lords since the late 60s, and never have I seen the work that is being done in Gambier, to put a winner on the field!

Well, Herald, as a Wooster fan, I would say that in years past you could put your head chearleader in at QB against Kenyon and still win (I remember one year watching film on Kenyon and being witness, for the first time in my life, to the UFO defense...for those of you who don't know what that is, its Un-F@*#ing Organized...where all the players were bouncing around and the linebackers were running in circles before the snap)!  Things definately changed last season.  This year is completely different than last year.  Last year, teams didn't take Kenyon seriously.  This year, however, teams won't be using Kenyon week to implement the Witt or Bash packages.  Speaking as a Woo fan, and former player, last years loss should have left a bitter taste in Woo's mouth, if not, there are some serious issues that need to be addressed.  While Kenyon is not on the same level as Witt or Bash, I look for Kenyon Week to have the same feel during practice.  Sigh, if only I could be there...

So, to sum up, Kenyon does have a good chance at being good this year.  There won't be any Cinderella dreams this year of running the table and being a co-champ (even though they don't play the top teams in contention this year).  Teams will not over look Kenyon this year.  Woo will be ready, Gheny will be ready, and of course, like last year, OWU will be ready.

Darkside-D      You were a tough LB, I can only imagine what those film sessions were like. But from a fans perspective, and also a LB on the D2 level. Kenyon could only get better,as a high school coach, I could not understand why not one player, could make a textbook tackle. You played just a short time ago, when did coaches pull away from fundamentals. I watch ten NCAC games at least every season and see more teams that make average ball carriers look like Jim Brown. As far as Kenyon, time will tell, they have had a team for years, now it is time to have a program!

frank uible

I doubt that Kenyon believes a program is desirable.

DarkSide-D

Herald,

That is a good point about fundamentals.  I don't think it has to do with coaches moving away from them.  I remember weeks of practice following games when the d didn't tackle well.  We spent the week tackling, tackling, and tackling.  My personal favorite was when one or two guys didn't pursue the ball well.  In those cases, we did pursuit drills out the wazzu.  Coaches still stress fundamentals, at least at woo they do, but if the player just doesn't have what it takes then the basics of the game won't take hold.  Its odd to say that, because the basics are what the game is built on.  Another issue is that coaches can't afford to spend every single practice session on the same drills.  They have to use that time to incorperate new plays and stunts.

Frank,

I agree.
