I can understand DPU letting Walker remain the head coach in baseball. But letting him play baseball? And this close to the camp? Yikes.

I'm not saying he's a bad person; or even a bad coach. He may turn out to be a complete genius of a coach. But it sure doesn't send a good message.

Wabash has enough recruiting "fodder" for about 5+ years...i was told last week that some of the Depauw returners had not been contacted directly by the new coach...if so, amazing...

How is Walker playing baseball any different than other coaches who play golf?  I can guarantee you most college coaches who are golfers are out playing up close to the start of camp.  Walker just happens to be young enough (i'm not going to say in shape enough, sorry coach) to play a more active sport.  Plus it's not like playing on a summer baseball team takes that much time anyway, probably less time than many spend golfing.

nice try for a "company man" but this dog won't hunt...call the players or better still, get in the car and go visit them...

I'm sure he's been in some form of contact with the returning players (probably a barrage of emails knowing him).  In my opinion the not calling every single player thing isn't that big of a deal because he's an in-house hire and all the returning players already know him very well.

scotty

again, nice try but a phone call would work...

well, to quote ron burgandy, agree to disagree.  I think we just have somewhat differing opinions on the matter, but remember it is still over a month till players report to camp I'm betting that he's been in phone contact with many of his players and will continue to contact the rest.  I don't want to get into it with you on here because unlike many posters from a certain school, you are sensible and don't trash DePauw for no reason.

scotty

thank you...i try to appreciate both sides but work needs to be done 24/7...when i was a child...good luck...

No offense, but in trying to get hold of coaches in this year and previous years, many aren't even in the office. This is a prime time for taking one last vacation to recharge before camp.

If the guy takes a couple nights a week to play ball I would hardly be concerned.

Scotty-  Just to provide facts to the discussion, I will say that Matt Walker called my house to speak with my son (a sophmore) the night the change happened.  He told him that he was calling every incoming kid that night, and since then he has emailed the team on several occasions.  The uppercalssmen are also calling the incoming kids and each other, I think they are all rallying around this whole thing.

As far as what Matt Walker does in his free time, as with all coaches/professionals is his business until it causes a problem.  I'm sure there are plenty of coaches who go home and drink a 12 pack of beer every night, but until they get a d.w.i its really none of our business.

Pat,

I agree.

At this point in the season nobody has proved anything and people need to worry about their own teams instead trying to dream up reasons why a certain team won't be any good this year.  We all have many.

Come on...is it really a big deal the guy is playing baseball.  What a joke!!

GoBigRed04

What a coach does in his free time is his business...it's JULY 11!  Like someone mentioned earlier, he's an in-house hire so the kids know him already.  With all the crazy things that we catch coaches doing in their free time in recently (scalping tickets, drinking WITH students, gambling, etc.) playing a little summer baseball should not be looked down upon.  This guys spends most of his year eating, drinking and sleeping football so it's his right to be able to have a little harmless fun.

scotty

tigerdadplm, i was "misinformed" then by 1 current Depauw player and 1 future Depauw player...my bad...
