just read that Vernon Mummert's daughter was chosen as homecoming queen and she is also the place kicker for the football team...is that the Vernon "legend" who the Wabash faithful refer to...

You're not referring to Witt/Woo circa 1997 are you?

lancer98: I recall the "Old Man" Crum who bashed Coop all those years.
I saw alot of things on Saturday. But what stood out most of all - the Bishops NEVER gave up. The guys have had some tough luck, but they kept on plugging away. They need All-NCAC Def. End Owen Case back (DNP vs Kenyon) and chances are he will play against COW. The defense is being over-run right now; very UNLIKE OWU. There is still alot of football left in this crazy 2006 season; and the meatgrinder schedule is up with COW, Big Red, Witt & Gators (Puppies close out).  Is 5-5 a reality? No..but maybe 2 wins are. I have nightmares that the game against the Puppies will be for our only win. GO BISHOPS

I wrote a nice story about that in Saturday's Paper of Montgomery County.

But it's not online for some reason.

Butler football has been a laughingstock in the state of indiana, but looks to be turning around.  With them turning around, will this hurt wabash's recruiting efforts???

Butler is by no means a good football after this win. A three-point win on a safety by an underdog has more markings of god's grace than it does of the team's proficiencies. Butler went 0-fer last season, and, sure, two wins to start this season is improvement, but I'd be skeptical of calling it a trend just yet. So, no, I don't think this will hurt Wabash's recruiting efforts. Or any other local, regional school for that matter.

As for Marian College, I don't think they'll be snatching away any hidden gems in the coming season or two. As a brand new team, I imagine they'll have to weather some subpar recruitment before they prove themselves competent. If you look over their roster, lots of guys are coming from the same schools, same communities. To me, that speaks more to the word of mouth between players than the active recruitment strategies of the coaches. Even without Marian's scholarships, I don't think Wabash suffers.

I mean, generally, it's true that these schools go after the same in-state guys who are bright, but not Div. IA material. But given Wabash's recent successes, I suspect that, once you get a kid on campus in Cville, show him the academics, show him the remodeling, let him talk to Coach C, he'll sign on the line which is dotted.

Gotta say this about the tigers, lot of talk coming out of other camps that they wear their legs out and they dont get their feet back for a while.  Tigers front seven might just be learning how to run now that theyre getting their paws back.  Big issue going into the stretch will be health.

How many safeties?

Loyal Son - Wabash lost a talented D lineman to Marian this year!  I am sure each year they will get a few that are on the same radar.

Interesting matchup with Wabash and Allegheny this weekend:  I am most excited to see the Bash O face a solid D.  It should be a good test.

Wabash #1 Offense in the NCAC (41.5 points per game / 476 yards per game)
Allegheny #1 Defense in the NCAC (11.2 points per game / 312 yards per game)

Behind the numbers on Gheny's D stats...their opponents thus far in 2006:

- Westminster averages 15.75 per game (Scored 10 on Gheny) - they are 1-3
- W&J averages 26 per game (Scored 22 on Gheny) - they are 3-1
- Hiram averages 8.5 per game (Scored 7 on Gheny) - they are 0-4
- Denison averages 12 per game (Scored 6 on Gheny) - they are 0-4

BB16, I think whichever team comes out on top in C-ville on Saturday is going to have a pretty good helpin' of validation waiting for them.

So what you're saying is that Allegheny's D stats are padded by playing the two worst teams in the conference.  That said, they will still pose the toughest test defensively that we've seen.  Let's just hope our defense comes to play.

The OmniGrass artificial playing surface at Selby Stadium is awesome. I got to "play" on it on Friday before Saturday's game. Where was this stuff when some of us had to play on the hard AstroTurf? A certain football coach at The Ohio State University has been exposed to the OWU surface and has already lobbied for the OmniGrass. GO BISHOPS

Three yards and a cloud of used tires.  At least you can go to the ground on the next generation of artificial turfs.  The old stuff was hard, but that was minor compared to the abrasions those vertically packed razor blades could leave.  The new stuff is a little more tiresome on the legs than the old bristly carpets, but not quite as fatiguing as the spun wool at Welcome Stadium.

Allegheny has had only one real test this year and that team, W&J, ran for nearly 300 yards on the Gators.  Not exactly a stellar effort.

That being said and last week's results aside, the running game isn't Wabash's strong suit.  I don't know how susceptible Allegheny's pass D really is.  W&J seemed to have no interest in throwing the ball (quite a departure from W&J teams of the past), Denison and Hiram are pretty inept with the passing game regardless of who is defending against them.  Westminster's starting qb had a pretty efficient day against the Gators, but came out for some reason (now I'm reading that both of the qb's are freshman...in the first game it looks like Westminster planned to play musical quarterbacks and it burned them) and promptly turned the ball over three times.  So, it looks like you might be able to get to Allegheny with the pass (good news for Wabash).  Allegheny's pass defense will be really tested for the first time on Saturday.

The old stuff did make you "faster", but the burns & pains were a part of it. UD & Finnie, as I remember, were hard. Sure, OmniGrass might have more give and you can see the shredded Firestone's in there, but I'd love to have played on it.
