The most impressive thing about today's game was the way that the Bash defense was able to gather itself late in the fourth quater and put the game away late.  They seemed to find their footing and reestablishment themselves.  Another 5 minutes wouldn't have changed the outcome.  The Gators came to play. Unfortunately Bash was Dr Jeckle and Mr Hyde.  The doctor looked great, but Hyde didn't.

I think you're right. We didn't win against Millikin so much as they ran out of time. But this was different. When we needed the team to nut up and close the door, they did so. I hope they can do that next week, and hopefully, do it earlier.

I love how Witt's articles are always about Wabash even when it is another opponent...  Here's a good quote from Harmon...  "It's the biggest game I'll ever play in," said Harmon, who's from Indianapolis. "I'm really excited about it. I wish we would have had a better performance today, but I think we're going to come in next week with a chip on our shoulder. They beat us last year by six points, and they're the conference champ. For me, it's always a personal vendetta because I'm from Indiana. ... I'll be pretty jacked."

Here's another one from Fincham... "I think I have every right to be upset with our team, and I think they have every right to be upset with themselves," Fincham said. "I was disappointed with how we played. If we play like this next week, we'll get thumped."  It sounds like he ripped them after the game.

Another good thing from the Wabash game...Finley averaged over 40+ yards on 4 punts.  Witt better shore up their punt protection.

Wabash's special teams play has improved tremendously since the Franklin game.  You mentioned Finley going for over 40 yards per punt.  Other special teams stats that are noteworthy:

- 0 punt return yards...a combination of good kicks and good coverage
- Allegheny was held to 8.0 yards per kickoff return.  Down from 25 yards per return for Franklin.
- Wabash blocked three kicks

The special teams have definitely come around.

Who would have thought that when Wabash entered this conference, the biggest game of a Wittenberg Tiger's career would be senior year vs. Wabash?

What was the name of the defense end that played at gheny with Riser.  Bob something, he was pretty good too.  Just can't remember his last name?  Riser was one of the best players to ever walk onto an NCAC field.

I believe you are thinking of Bob Tatsch, a DT.

Here are some stat lines from various offensive players from around the conference in yesterday's games.

1) QB - 38-58, 400 yards, 4 touchdowns, 3 INT
2) RB - 18 carries, 129 yards, 3 touchdowns
3) WR - 5 recpetions, 154 yards, 1 touchdown
4) WR - 6 receptions, 141 yards, 4 touchdowns
5) RB -  35 carries, 189 rushing yards, 1 touchdown, 3 receptions, 22 receiving yards

Now you guess which player was selected for NCAC offensive POW (hint: it's probably the absolute last one you would pick).

This "award" is brutal.

Without any context, the stats alone are virtually meaningless (and I have not checked all the game summaries/stat sheets to see who was who).

For example, some picks are critical, others are virtually meaningless - I'm tempted to disqualify the QB (despite otherwise sparkling stats) just because of the 3 INTs, but did they matter?

Without context, I'd tend to rank either #4 (4 TDs on 6 receptions is pretty impressive) or #5 (sounds like he kept the other team's offense off the field, and no doubt had plenty of first downs) as the most impressive, but hopefully the awards people take context into account!

wally_wabash

Context should matter....

One player scored one touchdown in a low-scoring game against a team that hasn't won a single game this year, another player scored 3 TDs in a game that broke the school's single game team scoring record AND become the school's all-time indvidual leading scorer, another had 4 TDs in a game between conference unbeatens.

Stastically and contextually, they made a poor choice.  I'm not taking anything away from the kid who won...he had a nice game.  But there were others in our conference who had great games and it's ridiculous to have this weekly recognition and not use it to recognize the best performances.

another thing is, you can't give the award to the same player every week, or in 2004, tony sutton would have won the award virtually every week, and in 2005, the wabash stud QB would have won the award 8 or 9 weeks. I think they are just trying to spread some love to some other players who may have had good games for them, but not good games for everyone else. for instance if a hiram WR catches 3 td passes its huge, that means hiram scored 21 points and is something to be celebrated. but if a wabash WR catches 3 td passes against hiram, its not nearly as large of a feat.

I can get behind that. It's not so bad if you look at it that way.

I actually called the league office last year after one weekend in which #3 had a rediculous game and was not selected.

They told me just that:

That they try and spread the award around the conference and recognize quality perfromances by players from some of the teams that don't get as much of headlines, as well.

I am totally cool with it.  It makes sence and actually is a good thing.

Matchup: Mount Union v Hiram?
Hypothetically any guesses as to the final score???

Mount Union won 59-0 in their last OAC meeting, 1999.

I understand what they're trying to do, I just think we've reached the point by the time we get to college athletics that these awards should go to the most deserving performances and not just as an arbitrary atta-boy to make everybody around the conference feel warm and fuzzy.

roadtrip

We attended our first Wabash game this week and had an excellent time....We brought way too much food but every tailgater had way too much food...fans, alum and students were all friendly and full of information and good stories...the book store will have to re-stock, I think my wife tried to empty the place...the game was fun in the first half and scary in the 2nd half...no pressure on the QB and the receivers were wide open...for as good of a day the Gheny QB had it could have been better if he were a little more accurate....I dont believe any D can stop the Wabash offense so hopefully we can keep putting the ball in the end zone and get a stop from our D when we really need it. Got my Bell tickets and waiting for the playoffs...U gotta have faith.
