What was the name of the defense end that played at gheny with Riser.  Bob something, he was pretty good too.  Just can't remember his last name?  Riser was one of the best players to ever walk onto an NCAC field.

I believe you are thinking of Bob Tatsch, a DT.

Went the the Wittenberg game Saturday.  Very sloppy.  The Tigers certainly have alot to work on this week and need to fix a lot of things before the showdown with the Little Giants.  Blocked PAT, Blocked Punt to name only two.  Murray and Vanover were stellar and the D played well on a short field.  Getting a couple turnovers was key, or the score could have been even closer.

I'm looking forward to next Saturday's tilt.  Should be a good game as I'm sure the Tigers and the Little Giants will come out swinging from their heals.

The key to any success next week for the tigers will be their ability to establish the running game early and keeping pressure off the QB.  The tigers need to improve at WR and have someone on the perimeter make some plays.  The defense will need to have some success early and often to help with the field position battle.

Go Tigers!!!

Yeah, there was a block in the back on that INT and then a celebration call. Better not celebrate if there is laundry on the carpet.

WOO WIN!!!!   The Scots played a solid game on both sides of the ball. D was very good and the O did a solid job of ball control in scoring their 24 points.  O still having a tough time getting the ball to the wide outs.  This is an area that must be addressed if Woo wants a shot at the conference crown.  Overall, solid play plus minimum mistakes = Woo Win.

I would be very surprised if Witt is able to stop Bash from moving the ball (i.e. Alma posting 509 yards).  The Bash WRs on turf are scary and I don't think there is much doubt that Bash will score points.  The question, I believe, is if the Witt O can keep up.  If Bash gets up early it may be a long day for the Tigers.  You know their hope is to keep Huff & Co. off the field with the running game (Murray & Vanover).

Witt's D seems to be extremly shaky vs. the Pass...yikes.  If Witt blitzes, does that cause "man" situations?  Can the Witt front get pressure on Huff?  Can they afford to put single coverage on Russell and/or Walker?

The Bash D has improved greatly vs. the Run but Murray will be a huge test.  They will need to prevent the big play and keep #21 from running wild.

It will be a very interesting matchup to say the least.  Both teams will be jacked...for sure.  Big stakes.

Wally - what's your breakdown?

I'll try to break this down...but I'll preface the whole thing by saying that I have absolutely no handle on either of these teams.

- The Wabash offense is legit.  I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect 35+ points from the LGs on Saturday, given Witt's propensity to give up major points to good offenses.

- The Wabash D can get torched with the pass.  Witt is a running team, especially this year with a true freshman at qb.  Does Fincham have the stones to put the game on his qb's arm (which is what the stats and the film would tell you to do) or is he going to stubbornly try to pound Murray into the line all day?

- Expect Witt to throw screens all day.  They were effective last year for Witt vs. Wabash.  Gheny had success with it Saturday.  Wabash has to get out and cover that screen because it's coming this weekend.

I'm expecting everything Saturday.  The focus this week is going to be on the defenses and who might be able to stop who, but (as CC says in almost every interview I've ever seen) these games almost always come down to special teams and turnovers.  It's going to be wild. that's for sure.

Hey, in case anyone cares (wait, don't answer that) I wrote about the day in the press box on Saturday here -  http://smedindy.diaryland.com/061009_49.html

thats a nice look into the life of a man in the pressbox smidindy, maybe we should be a little more grateful for  all of the announcers and even the stat guys around the conference.

Is Witt winning the turnover battle in-conference?  There was a key turnover late in the 2nd Quarter of the Alma game-which led to a score. While that one play alone didn't turn the game around, it did give Wittenberg momentum going into the locker room.

I figure if they get more turnovers versus Wabash, they'll have more of a chance to win that game.

Witt is +1 in turnover ratio in conference play. (+3 overall this season).  Wabash is +6 in conference play. (+8 overall).

But you're right...Witt won the Wooster game because of bad Wooster turnovers.  If they can wrest the ball from Wabash, they have more than a good chance to beat the LGs.

Does a great running back make a good quarterback look great? Yes!!  Wooster's
qb has not looked the same since Sutton left.
Who did OWU lose on defense that has left them defenseless?  Was that Cisco Clarviox(spelling) that good or did they lose other good players too on defense?
And at what point do you go to your underclassmen and prepare them for next year?
Wabash will go undefeated again this year unless Witt plays a perfect game. And I don't think they will.

I completely agree that Saturday's game hinges on defense and special teams.  Which right now are a huge concerns of mine.  With the yards the tigers are giving up defensively and the poor showing on special teams this past saturday.  As far as fincham goes, he'll have the stones to do whatever it takes to win.  I believe fincham will look at the tape and come into the game with a game plan that puts the tigers in the best position to win, just like CC.  You would be a fool to think that Murray and Vanover won't be huge parts of that gameplan.  Defensively the tigers should be able to put some pressure on Huff, but at what cost (Man Coverage).  I look for Hewitt and Fonseca to have good games Saturday against the Little Giant passing attack.  Harmon and Swanson will do enough to keep any run game in check.  It should be a great battle as they have been since the Little Giants came to the NCAC.

I can't wait.  Should be a great game.
Go Tigers!

Comment/analysis:  what has happened to OWU?  My take is that the Wabash game was a watershed for the team.  It gave its all ... lost ... and the record began to stink (as opposed to what it would have been had they defeated Wabash) ... somehow the team glue was not strong enough ... and parts began to fly off.  Right?  Wrong?  Injuries?  I hope it is external ... like key injuries and not internal ... as in team internally compusting.  The second takes a long time to cure.

With regard to Wabash/Witt ... should be a great game.  If Wabash gets out in front a decent amount early ... unless they spend the 3 rd quarter Rip Van Winkling ... the game is over.  I believe Witt will blitz and hope to cause QB to rush passes or suffer a sack.  This was somewhat successful by Gheny in 3 rd quarter.  If Wabash spends the week learning from what Gheny did and counters by throwing short ... it is Katie bar the door.

Witt will also probably use a goodly amount of screens / flats passes.  Again, Gheny used these to success in the 3rd and 4th quarter.  It seemed that when Wabash rushed 3 and covered ... they contained the Gheny pass.  Then on 3rd and long ... Wabash would blitz ... Gheny had good routes getting open ... the blitz was picked up ... and the screen worked very well.  Later Wabash adjusted to thew outlet pass and this stopped.  Look for something similar from Witt ... working it off their running game.  That screen / flats pass could hurt Wabash ... I hope they are working on that as a part of the package of stopping the running game.  If the screens/short ppasses/running game gets going ... Wabash will have trouble on D.

If this occurs, look for an arena bowl score.  The first team to not score on O (a la arena ball) will lose.

The "X" will be special teams.  From Wabash ... Franklin was an embarrassement of the special teams.  Improvement has been steady since then.  Gheny was the best outing yet.  No reason to believe it should not keep improving ... but again ... Witt has something to say about this.  Not sure about Witt special teams ... but based upon goofs reported last weekend (it was homecoming) ... both teams will hope their special teams come through.  I fewel coinfident CC has his going in the correct direction.  Fincham is a good coach with good players ... no reason to believe Witt will not also perform.

Prognistication:  Wabash O is too efficient.  Wabash will win ... on the O's shoulders.  Wabash D will make the game interesting.  Special teams on EWabash side should hold up.  Pull the Wagon O ... and D ... give us a little of that "old Hard Hat".

The first team to not score?  Arena Bowl?

Let one ICAC team in the door and the whole Miami Valley, cradle of coaches, 3 yards and a cloud of dust, Woody Hayes and Heisman NCAC goes to hell in a hand basket.

Heres a clue, go over to the HCAC board and scope some of VBells Nebraska power reverse conversations from the summer and late last spring.  This is whats expected against the vaunted Undersized Nephilim.  TE stick routes and middle fullback arrow corner routes.

Did somebody mention this Coach Fincham from Springfield likes to run the ball?

Really the whole barb of this post is in reference to Witt attacking the flats.  Much different team offensively than in recent years past, though the usual suspect is expected to do the damage.

Think this game could be a real slugfest, and if either team were to play lights out defensively would be extremely surprised.  That being said, I dont think the winner of the contest puts up even 28 points.

Its all going to be about momentum at crucial times, discipline...  Oh yeah, and running to the ball on defense.
