Smoooooth Scotssis ;)

Having played with EWat, he has a motor that doesn't stop.  Perhaps his best quality as a ball player (IMO) is his aggressive streak on the field.  Kid loves to hit!

All this worry over tiebreakers is kind of like fretting over all the options to treat a brain tumor because you got up this morning with a headache... ;D  All the what-ifs will dwindle over the next three weeks.

My crystal ball says, after wins and losses, and after strength of schedule, they sequester themselves in a room, drink a six pack and flip a coin.... ;D

Player of the week for D3Football.com

LB Adrian Pynenberg, Jr., Wabash
Pynenberg led a Wabash defense that held Oberlin to minus-55 rushing yards on 21 carries. He finished with nine tackles (eight) solo, three of which were sacks for a loss of 27 yards in the 48-20 win.

To be accurrate, that is the NCAA's quality of wins index which is not a strength of schedule index.  They used to call it a SOS index, but changed it because they couldn't have mislabeled the thing any worse.  I suppose they could have changed the formula and started to use a true SOS index or some other meaningful metric, but instead they elected for the path of least resistance and just changed the name of their existing crummy index.

A wet field I think favors Wabash...I subscribe to the theory that a wet field hurts a pass defense more than it hurts a pass offense.  Strong winds will heavily favor Wooster.  CC tends to bottle up the offense big time when the wind blows.  I don't think Wabash can win if they are trying to get their yards on the ground.

scotssis & ScotLass...I think you're confusing SOS with the NCAC power ranking here.  An overall SOS isn't what (might be...remember, this is just an inference on my part) breaking three-way (or more) ties atop the conference.  It's the power rating that the NCAC assigns to teams based on past performance...Kenyon right now has the #10 power rating and thus wouldn't be win a tiebreak over any two teams that ended up tied with them (assuming that Kenyon didn't beat both of those teams head-to-head of course).  Unfortunately this is the nature of a conference that doesn't play a round robin...any three-way tie situation is bound to give at least one team a raw deal.  The NCAC's system (I think) is designed to give the teams that were in recent years the short straw presently.

Wally our analysis here really reveals our roots.  Was analyzing the weather effect in my mind if not verbiage as promoting one or the others rush game and hindering the others rush defense rather than looking at it from the perspective of your post.

Have to agree with you, especially given the current offensive style of Woo.  Many run teams like to run between the 20s and throw passes down in the redzone.  When Woo closed out Witt in 97 under similar field conditions (well maybe not that egregious) they threw between the twenties and pounded down near the redzone.  Think that game supports your post.

Also have to take into account my roots independent of Witt, the wing t and its series play calling.  Have series dedicated simply to the management of bad weather for both ball protection and the aforementioned patches of field position.

Why the NCAC couldn't have posted this on their website, published it in their media guide, or anyplace where the general public could look at it is beyond me.

Now that it's out there, let's criticize the heck out of it.  I'll go first.   :)

They have got to get rid of the provision regarding fewest losses on the road.  With a 7-game conference schedule, not everybody plays the same number of conference road games...for instance it wouldn't be fair for a team like Wabash to go 3-0 on the road in NCAC play and win a tiebreak over anybody who played 4 NCAC road games and lost one.

At least 2a doesnt set the league up for some power rating system that implicates 2b.  2b could allow this league to be decided in some perverse fashion as to who lost to the lower ranking opponent with a tie for last place.

Oh wait, am being a lttle egocentric here, the 2b situation still exists were Witt to drop another, Bash wins out, Hiram beats beats OWU, Dension beats Earlham and Earlham beats Hiram.  Then Kenyon, if they win out, and Bash dance the third tiebreak.  Grrr!  Producing a three way tie for second to last place with Hiram playing nothing but the role of collaborator, not even spoiler.

Thanks Scotlass!

Actually thanks.  Was being facetious, but for some reason the Springfield link wont come up without registration but a few minutes after giving an unregistered glimpse.  Thank the heavens!

Couldnt have handled the 3rd level analysis.  (and now wally simultaneously refreshes it in my mind - dont you have some ALRs to read; start at parole evidence and end with the rule against perpetuites, when you get to the part about restaurants hit me up)

If anything Kenyon has to love the attention being brought by all this.  Almost propels the Kenyon Denison game to the heights of Woo-Bash.  Well, maybe not.

Nonetheless, Im not posting on this topic anymore as my brain hurts like a nicotine hangover.

Thanks,

All of this tiebreak business notwithstanding, I think the conference championship will come down to whoever wins tomorrow's game in C'ville and then whether or not Allegheny can beat Witt next weekend.

It should be noted that Oberlin and Kenyon play each other next weekend, so one of those teams will certainly drop to two losses.  If Oberlin wins they still need to beat Witt and Allegheny to stay at the top with one loss.  Kenyon would still need a final weekend win against Wooster.  These are awfully long odds for either team to run through the league with just one loss.

Here's a fun quote from Fincham about last week's game at OWU:

"Their first touchdown was on a trick play. On their second touchdown, a pass-interference penalty kept their drive alive. On their third score, the field goal, defensive holding kept their drive alive. The calls didn't go our way."

Wouldn't know what that's like, coach...sounds like a bummer though.   ::)

If Oberlin or Kenyon do pull off the hat trick they deserve to go.

A win over Wooster legitimates Kenyon.  Woo doesnt have the long run tradition, but they have been close in their loss and beat Allegheny who is more recently legitimate than anybody else in the conference, after all they have the lone league national title.

If Oberlin wins out (UNO if you are who I think you are slap me) they cant be any more legitimate at this stage.

Woo could go into the Kenyon game beat up from Bash and the Gators and Tigers dont play so friendly.

Cmon Wally, just after I floated you some karma.  Shouldnt you be building up some angst for another set of Tigers.    I do however take issue with the issuance of the term trick play as anything orthodox or conventional would be a trick play to the wing t.

Here you go in case the link doesn't work.....I suggest a little Maalox and 2 Tylenol before reading this.... ;D

• "1. Head-to-Head result(s) between tied teams."

• "2. Result(s) versus individual opponents examined in descending order, individually, until tie is broken. The tied teams must have a common opponent in order for the result to be considered; if not a common opponent, move to the next team in the standings. The first team to have beaten a higher-ranked team that is a common opponent wins the tiebreaker.

"If the tie is not broken in the descending order review, start from the bottom of the standings and examine opponents in ascending order. The first team to have lost to a lower-ranked team loses the tiebreaker (no common opponent provision in ascending review)."

• "3. The team with the fewest losses in conference away games."

• "4. The team with the higher preseason power ranking used to determine conference schedule. This provision would not apply if a tiebreaker had been used to separate the teams in final power ranking."

"5. The team with the longest active winning streak in conference play at the end of the season."

"6. The team that has not participated in the NCAA playoffs for the longest period of years ("Rose Bowl rule")."

"7. Coin Toss. When three or more teams are tied, the same procedure shall be followed until one team is eliminated. The process shall then be repeated until one team emerges.
