What were they (they being the NCAA)  thinking when they decided to start the clock when the ball is the kicked?  Are they in THAT much of a hurry to get these games over with?  IMO, this was a great move by Wisconsin but I'd prefer to not see this particularly strategy available to coaches in the future.  Let's let the players decide the game.

Awesome. Just awesome.

I'm sure they'll change this "loophole". But that's still great.

I lived in Parkersburg during Buddy James' tenure.  The sons of several of my colleagues played for him and had a lot of respect for a very demanding coach.  (I also was fortunate to begin my HS football officiating career in WV (one of the best HS officiating programs in the country IMO) and worked out with his team.

I had no idea what the PKB team was doing until I looked on their web site.  Based on their history and my dated recollections, the Big Reds were always competitive and might fare well against some of the better Ohio programs.

You live near Williamstown?  Or just keeping an eye on HS football?

Does the concept "unsportsmanlike conduct" come to mind?

And what the NCAA was thinking was TV$

"Unsportsmanlike conduct" was certainly JoPa's reaction!  The Wisconsin coach's response (I can't find the exact quote) was to the effect "My job is to know the rules and give my team the best chance to win within the rules.  Those were the rules."

Whether or not it was a breach of good ethics, I'd have to salute the Wisconsin coach for a clever loophole.  But something tells me the loophole will be fixed by next season!

BashFan74, I live in Williamstown. I remember Buddy James very well, old school type of coach and I like that. Parkersburg South has had some success in recent years but it was short lived. PHS is back to being the big bully on the block. All Wood County schools have done very well representing in the state playoffs for several years now.

I saw the same thing in the Wisconsin game.  As a longtime PSU fan I was getting a little perturbed.  That will definetly be changed in the offeseason I believe.

Think about it. You realistically could continue to do that in order to force your opponent into horrible field position near the end of the game.

The rule needs to be revised and will in the offseason.

As I think more about it, all the receiving team has to do is decline the penalty.  But I will never defend the TV$ pacifiying clock rule abomination.  Lets hope it gets revoked in its entirity.  But deliberatly breaking a rule to gain an advantage seems the essence of unsportsmanlike conduct.  I guess we can live with the delay to get the ball moved back for a punt, and again the receiving team can decline, which I have seen done.  I always thought it would be better to use a false start which I don't believe can be declined (I could be wrong there).

And should the receiving team be able to have the option to enforce kick offsides from the succeeding spot?  And not have to risk a second kick to gain the benefit of the infraction.

But that's just it - Wisconsin DIDN'T break a rule!  (It may well be that it is the rule that is broken! ;))

If the PSU staff was thinking quicker, they should have declined the first penalty (the second time, there were off-setting penalties, so they didn't have that option).  But I imagine that strategy caught them TOTALLY off guard.

I'm not sure I will defend Wisconsin ethically, but I salute them for creativity in exploiting a rule in a perfectly legal way!

The rule they deliberately broke was going offsides.

OK, gotcha! ;)

But they sure found a way to ABIDE BY that new clock rule!

oldguy

Yes, Penn St could have declined the penalty, but the problem is that since the kick team left so early, there was no way PSU could get a decent enough return to not take the penalty.

Fellow NCAC'ers -

This was the last paragraph of a Wabash post on the Monon Bell thread, I thought you would enjoy this piece...rivalry?  What rivalry?  Go Windshields!

"Therefore, I suggest two key words for this Saturday's game: golf cart.
I envision a football team and student body so hungry to keep the Bell
that the combination of team and fans punishes the opossums so thoroughly
that there is no recourse but to use golf carts to haul the perpetually
injured dannie players off the field. Break them down, player by player,
until they run out of players, run out of bandages, and run out of hope.
Let's not just win—let's crush them. They're the bugs, we're the
windshields."
