Or his senior picture in Wabash 71.  It's choice, for a Cathedral guy.  ;D

A couple of noteworthy week 1 items...admittedly not quite as interesting as John Pactor's neckwear.  :)

- OWU is streaming video of their game vs. Franklin.  Awesome.  Everybody needs to be doing this without exception.

- Denison is playing the 1000th game in their program's history on Saturday.  Oddly enough, Wabash played the 1000th game in its history last season...@ Denison.  As that was Denison's final home game of 2006 and this is obviously the first game of the 2007 season, the last two games played at the Piper will have been the 1000th game for somebody.  What are the odds?  Has this ever happened?  Interesting stuff...

How ironic, I will most likely drink my 1000th beer on Saturday, watching my WSU Cougs getting hammered by the Badgers in Madison.   :P

I totally agree with the streaming video of all games.   I have researched it and it is not that difficult or expensive to pull off.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

Honestly think with Sheppard in backfield, passing game for Parker will go fine. Sheppard is not Sutton, but a year older, healthy and yes, the best back in the league this year.
Wooster will compete this year.

wally_wabash

I'm taking a wait and see approach here with Sheppard.  Yes, he ran for 1000 yards last year, but he got 49% of his carries, 60% of his yards, and 71% of his points in just 38% of his games (3 of the 8 games he played in....those three games: Hiram, Earlham, and Kenyon).  I'd like to see Sheppard bring it with a little more consistency against the top half of the conference before I'm comfortable calling him the best back in the league.

We've got some good backs in the conference.  Carroll out there in Oberlin made 2nd team all-NCAC last year (without an NFL prospect to run behind), Witt never seems to be without a very good back...there's competition for here for the best back in the league.

As good as Sheppard may be, there will be points in every single game where Wooster will need the quarterback to pick up a first down.  Right now, Wooster has to rely on somebody who's never taken a college snap to do that.  3rd and long is going to be a tough, tough situation for the Scots for at least the first few weeks.

nike,

I've got to agree with wally here. No matter how the team has looked out in the quad, they were sluggish at the Black/Gold scrimmage and they looked pretty rough at the B-W scrimmage.

Sheppard is a very good runner and one has to be serious about tackling him, but even he needs a line to block. The O-line didn't do the job at the B-W scrimmage. Parker has to have some time too. He has a good arm, but under pressure it's a challenge. Undoubtedly, he will improve with experience as will the rest of the Scots. Speed was an issue at the scrimmage with the DB's and the receivers in particular. Gaining another half step will help.

Right now reality says that many players have had little to no experience on the field. They've had a good example set by those who graduated, but on the field experience over time is what will tell the tale.

Maybe not as good as using a computer program to mine every DePauw e-mail address and then send a "special" picture, but a prank that even the Beaver would be proud of:

I am looking forward to watching the Little Giants this weekend and their awesome qb/reciever group. I am particularly interested in the matchup of Pete Ittersagen against the wabash passing game. Pete didn't play in the scimmage last year and he is one of the best dbs in the CCIW. That will be fun to watch for both sides. I hope Studebaker, our big DE plays some (he has been out most of camp). I am also eager to see the Bash D fly around against the Wheaton O which will have Zach Ullrich as QB. Zach transferred from Northern Illinois and played in every game last year. Some good D3 football players will go head to head as well as many young guys. should be a great test for all involved

A piece of general info for those of you who understand how stained everything is which is Dannie-esk:

As I reported earlier ... the "I am going to sue you" former Dannie head coach ... landed a job as head coach of the Catholic Central High School Cougars football team.  Catholic Central is a traditional powerhouse in Michigan Class BB football.  Well ... good ole "sue you"  is 0 for the world at CC ... getting pasted for the second time ... this time 38 to zip last night.  Hmmmm ... wonder where he is going to be next.

I hadn't heard that.  That's terrific.  Wonder who the "powerhouse" was playing to get blanked like that....

I missed this somehow in the past, so I humbly ask your forgiveness.  If Ullrich played in every game last year at Northern Illinois, why the transfer?  Was it a personal aspect, family aspect, not liking the school, or a football aspect, etc.?  Just curious.  Regardless, I would imagine he will do well for his new team.

He did not play every game at NIU last year.  He transfered into Wheaton prior to last season - iow last year was his first year at Wheaton.

Wheaton had a 5th year senior at QB last year (multiple 1st All CCIW selection) so there was a tough coaching decision with what to do about an established 5th year senior vs. a very talented transfer who doesn't know the system yet.

It ended up that Ullrich ended up playing in every game last year - right around 1/3 of the snaps.  It wasn't a QB rotation per se... but he'd typically get a couple of series in the 2nd quarter, a series in the 3rd quarter and then mop up time in blowouts.  Also if the starting QB (Chupp) was struggling, Ullrich would get more snaps.

So that means for this year Ullrich knows the system better, had significant real game experience last year and should be ready to go for this season.  Personally I have high expectations for Ullrich since he has an experienced group of receivers and a solid O-line in front of him (though there are already a few injuries there).

As to why he transferred usee probably has more insight than I, but:
1. He grew up in Wheaton (played at Wheaton North H.S.)
2. While he was 2nd string at NIU for a time, a younger recruit surplanted him and was expected to become the eventual starter
3. He knew a number of guys already on the Wheaton team
4. He would get more playing time at Wheaton

According to today's Daily Record, JCU has a transfer running back from Bowling Green.

http://www.the-daily-record.com/news/article/2480311

Now, based on what he did in high school, this isn't any ordinary transfer. This looks like the OAC version of Tony Sutton. He rushed for 2,300 yards and 36 TDs at St. Edward, a major Div. I school in Cleveland. He also finished third in the Mr. Ohio Football voting.

Wooster is in major trouble.
