The NCAC is 9-19 in non-conference play. OK, 9-15 without the games against Case.

Still, it may be a .333 batting average if OWU can't beat Case in their season finale.

If we don't step up, the NCAC will continue to be placed in tough situations in the post season and justify the people who denigrate the conference. And I guess we've got nothing to say, "Hey, wait..." right now.

Woo started with a really good idea. All their scheduled JV games last year were against OAC teams, good teams like Mount, BW, and ONU. Seems smart.....schedule yourself against tough opponents as you are developing your players to get them prepared for the real deal. Playing those JV games seems especially important when you know you are going to have so many key players graduate and some of the guys who are going to have to take over aren't seeing much playing time in varsity games. It would also allow for realistic evaluation of players in game situations instead of just relying on controlled situations in practices and might provide some better indication of whether the game plan needed any alteration to fit the upcoming group of players. It might help with development of team cohesiveness better than standing on the sidelines would. It would seem to be a great foundational step in being able to field the best prepared team possible this year.

But alas, by this time last year, all the remaining scheduled JV games were cancelled due to travel budget issues. In my most humble and uniformed opinion......right there is where Wooster's current situation started and it's most difficult to recover from that kind of lost opportunity.

Yikes! Travel budget issues for JV football where there are no overnight trips? You HAVE to be kidding me. Sounds like someone didn't want a sacred cow slaughtered after a budget shortfall so they picked on something easy.

Wooster has a $240 million endowment...it's really difficult to justify this kind of penny pinching.  As much as I hate to say it, if this is going to be the policy at COW, fielding an annually competitve football team is going to be very, very tough.

No worries though...there's still enough space in the Wooster budget to send the hoops team to the Bahamas this year.   ::)

I wish I were kidding. Personally, I couldn't think of a single thing that would justify that. It's just plain embarrassing.

That's kind of funny isn't it? And I don't mean "haha" funny.

So that explains why Wooster can't afford an ambulance at Papp stadium for football games... The Ambulance budget was raided to purchase sunscreen and flipflops for the basketball teams Bahama trip ::)   BRILLIANT!!!
So if you think about it... We have to kill these animals or else they will die...... Guess that makes us environmentalists

How much is the school actually paying the tab for that tournament. From what I've seen, the tourney is put on by a tour company to sell packages to alumni and parents.

Of couse, a crasser retort to the complaints could also be "Let us know when the football program makes the Final 4."

Still...the appearance seems weird.

I've been a frequent reader of this board for the last couple of years; the most intelligent postings on the entire D3.COM in my humble opinion.

I've a few things to say about a subject subject close to my heart. Athletic fund raising or rather the lack of it at COW. You won't believe the disadvantage COW has regardless of their current endowment level.

Unlike any of the other schools in the NCAC Wooster Athletics in general or any of the school's specific mens/womens teams are forbidden to engage in the pursuit of raising $$$$. Scot's Basketball Program is the only exception, so now you see how they can go to the Bahamas.

There can't even be a former-player golf tourney where the hat gets passed to raise a few $$$ that might enable the team when they travel not to have 4 large men in two double beds at Motel 6 or buy a few more rolls of tape for the training room. Three Wooster grads and some others started a little company that did pretty well called Cybex.

Cybex isn't allowed to do anything special for the football team, which seems crazy. The school only accepts donations to the general fund. Talk about a competitive disadvantage in recruiting and in trying to run a top-flight athletic department. COW stands to lose big-time if this policy remains.

Many of my fellow COW alumni are appalled at this draconian policy. Our hope is the new President will change this rapidly. But we have our doubts. Our facilities have been long passed by the likes of Wabash, Dension, Kenyon, Oberlin, AC and now even Earlham.

Sorry to rant in my first post but we're now part of the bottom 20% from a facility perspective and not that's not fair to the players and coaches. Are there any other COW Grads that feel the same way? Or should I just forget about it?

Pat Coleman

I never donate to my alma mater's general fund. Anything I have to give goes to athletics (or perhaps the campus radio station, if it ever asked).

I don't think we are seriously comparing a basketball tournament in the Bahamas to JV football games. That's apples and oranges.

I wouldn't expect the football team to go to the Bahamas even if they made it to Salem. But a few minor excursions in Ohio isn't too much to ask if you are moderately serious about being competitive.  ;)

Welcome WooMeister! I hope Woo alums DO put a little pressure for improvements to ALL aspects of the college!

I do know this-the new president of the COW will be addressing the dwindling minority population on campus that has taken place the last ten years or so. And that has certainly been reflected on the athletic field. Well, I can only speak about football and basketball as far as what I see on the field and court. Wooster has four returning African-Americans this year, according to the website.
And Saturday, as I remember, Wabash appeared to have a number of blacks contributing. Do not remember that many for OWU.
Does Wooster even have any away games where they stay overnight?

ScotLass

I know the team stayed in Crawfordsville last year.

First, inferior helmets...second, no feeding the players on the way home...now this. Why not just add $5K to the bill of any kid that wants to play football. If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny.
