That article about sums it up, doesn't it?  I especially like Fincham's quote about how Wooster wasn't that bad, and Witt wasn't that good.  Very classy quote to help Woo save face, even if he couldn't say it with a straight one.

There seems to be a trend here...lack of execution.  I keep hearing how the players were "prepared" but they simply failed to execute.  Well, I have a hard time seperating the two...being well prepared means you a prepared to execute, its not enough to simply know what your assignments are.  This should become obvious during the course of the week if execution is an issue.  Not executing reflects, IMO, lack of adequate preperation.  The onus is on both the players and coaches in this department.

Well, at least OSU is playing well, and for those of you in the C-bus area, check out Ohio Dominican sometime.  The program is only 4 years old, but they are steamrolling already.  I know its NAIA, but still they are playing good football.  Its amazing what can happen when a school backs a football program 100%...take notes, COW.   >:(

But they are doing it with Nathan Clark who was supposed to come to Witt
but decided to go to ODC who some unknown reason.   ??? $$$

But everything works out fine in the long run, Corey Weber and now Rod Belcher. Remember that name, Belcher.

Here's the part of the Daily Record article that struck me:

"The loss drops Wooster to 0-1 in the NCAC, putting them at a decided disadvantage in the season's final six games. From here on out, they have to play perfect football if they want a chance at the postseason.

Schmitz said at this point he's just worried about his troops taking it one day at a time and continually getting better.

"I tell the guys all the time not to try to be perfect," Schmitz said. "It's about giving your best and doing it everyday. Not just Saturday, but Tuesday through Friday, too."

Huh? I would think your goal as a team and what you prepare for in every practice, would be perfect execution by each individual player on every play. If you raise the bar to that level, then when you fall short of perfect execution, as we all do every now and then, you are still competitive. Setting the bar any lower than that means if you fail to execute, after 4 games your opponents have scored 157 points to your 59 and your opponents have 2012 yards of total offense to your 895.

But hey, I am frequently confused.  ;D     Go Scots!

Scotlass - your point or question is correct.
Basically it comes down to this... when your are hitting the practice feild and you practice half a$$ed then that is all you know what to do to when the "Big Show" comes around on Saturday ........ you perform half a$$ed.
But to add to this .... to perform is something that is done year round. The athelete has to build upon his physical and mental stability to be able to be successful. Not just showing up in August and saying "Lets go do it".  The player has got to be inspired that he/she has to keep building their self everyday. There has to be that moment in the day that they train....mental or physical.

I think that the NCAC programs are turning in that direction in their football programs. I am a newbe that will be rooting the Big Red on every week, but I beleive that this program is in that mode now. The recruiting systems seem to have been getting atheletes that they want the last couple of years vs. seeing who enrolls and trying to get players from an enrollment sheet. The amount of juniors & soph. & even freshman that are seeing playing time are showing that. Plus the great thing that this brings is that when the athletic bar has been risen on the practice field .. thus  it will start showing up on Saturday's.

Like I said, I am a newbe to this board ..... but I love getting on here and reading once or twice a week to see the opinion's fly.

As Far as The Big Red right now ........ the defense is getting tougher. I thought they played well against the Gators. They had the air attack move the ball some but the running game was held pretty tight. The offense needs some better schemes to work with. They are getting very predictable also. I beleive that we have the talent to be competetive right now. It is almost like the offense is not preparing to adapt to a possible weakness of a defense. But the Big Red is getting better...

Go Big Red ..........

The scene, Coach Schmitz's office at Wooster College, The staff all gathered around each assistant sporting a pair of ruby red coaching shoes, the head coach places a pair on his feet as well... "On the count of 3.. click, click, click" With their eyes closed the Wooster coaching staff chants as one while clicking their heels "There is no place like 2004, There is no place like 2004" Coach Schmitz's opens his eyes looks at his desk calendar "darn we are still in 2007, well there goes that idea" A voice pipes up "perhaps we should try new coaching strategies" "but wouldn't that mean we actually had to coach?" Another voice quips from the back of the office ...Coach Schmitz ponders briefly before giving his answer "this time let's all put a hand on my coach of the year award as we click our ruby red coaching shoes, maybe that will get us to 2004 when we were great." >:( :( :-X
So if you think about it... We have to kill these animals or else they will die...... Guess that makes us environmentalists

D-Day : Season's over, man. Schmitz dropped the big one.

Scotlass: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Otter : [whispering] Germans?

Boon : Forget it, she's rolling.

Scotlass: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... [thinks hard] the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go! [runs out, alone; then returns] What the **** happened to the Wooster I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you ScotLass, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my butt from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Schmitz , he's fired! Beckett, fired! Rooker - Fired

Otter: ScotLass's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bums. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

ScotLass: We're just the people to do it.

D-Day: Let's do it.

ScotLass: LET'S DO IT!!

LG: Great visuals  ;)

chilly, chilly, chilly: Dorothy acquired the ruby red slippers and their magical abilities after her house fell on their owner, the Wicked Witch of the East. I am hoping the Scots' house doesn't have to completely fall for them to play to their ability.  :o

WOW WOO!  The class of 07 is looking better all of the time.
Everyone is pounding pretty hard on Schmitz. I guess rightfully so, but the reality is great players make for a great team. There are very few coaches that can produce wins if the talent isn't there. Right now Woo is in shock mode after loosing so much talent to the 07 graduations and their future nucleus is very young.  They tout this year's freshman class as being very good, but that remains to be seen.

As far as Schmitz goes, he is a good coach. He cares about his kids and works hard. But, like most coaches, he leaves you pondering some of his decisions quite often. The one that haunts me the most was his decision to use Sutton as a blocking back on the last two possessions of the Carthage game. Sutton was one of the most talented playmakers in all of D3 football. This was a playoff game, a dream for many teams.  A win meant a shot at Mount and they were beatable. I believe that when your back is against the wall you should go to your best, putt Sutton under center if you have to, but get Sutton the ball.

As far as Woo's future goes, that depends on Woo spending some money to improve their athletic facilities, as many of today's athletes want all of the shiny new toys. Without that investment combined with a few loosing seasons and Woo becomes a very hard sell to future recruits.
