I haven't posted in a while but have been following along with the Wabash conference/playoff  vs bell game discussion.  I personally don't know that one is more important than the other.  The Bell has the 100 years of tradition the conference has the hope and glory of playoff runs and national championship aspirations.  I don't think one goes without the other.

The only thing I will say with regards to this argument is that when you go back to the campus as alumni and meet with alums older and younger than yourself nobody ever asks if you made the playoffs they only ask what your record was against Depauw while you were there.  This will never change.  The die hard football fans may want to go to the playoffs every year and try and win a national championship.  To the average alumnus who loves WABASH but maybe not wabash football the Bell game is and always will be #1 priority.  So in 20 years when you go back to campus and they ask someone who graduated in 2007 or 2008 they aren't going to ask if they went to the playoffs they are going to ask what was their record in the Bell game.

So I don't know which is more important.  I know while I played we were 3-0-1 in the Bell game.  I also know that we never made the playoffs.  Would I have liked to have gone and played sure, would I trade a bell victory for the chance to play in the playoffs not in a million years.

I think to those on this board that love Wabash and Wabash football in particular the answer would be the playoffs are more important than the bell but to the average Wabash alum who just loves Wabash and follows football on the side the answer would be the Bell will and always will be most important.

...I finally got into the Allegheny website...first time since summer 2007....very strange, yet, satisfying...this tells me 2 things. 1) it's the off-season and 2) slow day at the office. Any stories of steroid abuse in D3 to keep us going? Just kidding....As we reach Day 25 of the Wabash Watch...

This is a really good post and I won't disagree with anything you're saying.  I do think you'll see some of what you're talking about change in the coming years.  To the alums who have this "fringe" interest in Wabash football that you speak of, I would only ask of them to latch on to one of these playoff runs in the coming years.  Come to the games and experience it first hand.  Will there be 10,000 people in the stands?  No.  Will there be Dannies to insult?  Almost cetainly not.  But tournament games are just such an exhilarating experience...every single play is magnified.  It's difficult to explain...it would be easier for people to go to these games and experience it for themselves.

The great thing is that the Bell game will always be huge....whether because of tradition and extreme dislike for the Dannies or for the prize to rest at the correct zip code for another year.   OR, for those playoff minded individuals, the Bell game is also a huge late season game that could mean the difference between one or two home playoffs games or going on the road.

Either way there is something for everyone one to root for that weekend.
Why should you go for it on 4th down?

We want HUFFY LEGEND!!!  Just wait...

Great, here we go again with the cryptic lingo......

Wally - you need to strategically place some of your cronies on campus in C-ville, equip them with video equipment - so they can video all candidates and then you can post the clips on Youtube.   ;D  Get on that brother.  Can Mansview go undercover?  I can see him down in the Scarlet Inn...long trench, shades, ball cap, and recording devices all over him.

I have my operatives posing as Mexican Nationals penetrating the athletic department as we speak.  ;)  It's worked before.

Ha!  Great idea....I use a lot of adjectives to describe Mansview, but "incognito" probably wouldn't be one of them.   :D
