Li'l Giant

Quote from: wab64 on April 08, 2008, 06:37:30 PMI'm happy that Texas has been organizes for Li'l Giant, big as it is. It is as big as it is because the Republic of Texas had to join the union as one state-the Congress was opposed to the southerners who wanted to break it up into 3 or 4 slave states, which would have been contrary to the gentleman's agreement that states were admitted 2 at a time, one slave and one free. So much for being pedantic-----Wabash Always Fights

Check Wabash web site.  Looks like a good hire as new head track coach.  Clyde Morgan.  Accomplished as an undergrtad in both track and football at Thiel.  In recent past (i.e. until being hired now by Wabash) was head Thiel Track Coach and produced a successful product.  With his football background as well, he could/should be a good fit cross recruiting good footballers who are also good trackers.

BB 16 ... what is the latest in the area of recruits in the bag?

wab64

???  What is the prognosis, bb16. I just read the UAC board and there was a post from Carnegie Mellon that was pure red meat to a winter starved addict coming out of hibernation. Surely someone cuold put together something similar, unless everything is being played close to the vest and not for attribution in Crawfordsville. In addition to purile and pedantic, I must be getting paranoid. Best go back on my meds.

4 months in "Giants fan years" is about 12.5 years.  Yeah, it's going to be a long summer.    :-\

Come on BB16 ... you are our mole.  What is the recruit status report?  I know of a couple of studs but don't know if it is ready for prime time viewing.  SO ... what do you have?  What is the word on the new assistants?  How about the turnout and good/bad from the spring parctice without O/D contact?

Apparently the Earlham Pres. got slapped down in his desire to dumb down D II.  Good news.  Boy that would be a downer to go Earlham and go out for football when the  Commander and Chief wants to remove whatwever meager support that exists there.

no kidding...how about trying to recruit kids to play football... any chance they'll pull the plug in a few years?

I would doubt it.  They just spent seven figures giving their football facility a facelift to bring it up to the realm of respectability.  My guess is that Dr. Bennett waits for 3-4 years and then pushes the D-IV idea again.

bb16,wally_wabash, SOMEBODY----tell us birds in the wilderness!! Recruiting-spring drills-offensive (defensive) philosophy-how last years freshmen and sophomores look after a winter of conditioning. The list goes on. I'd like to hear how the young linebackers shape up (to speak of a hole in the middle) We've talked about the promising wide receivers, replacing Russell, Green& Co, running backs are sound, the qb is back.
Matt Kraft and Rich Lehman are back, presumably, and Kraft could move inside, replaced at "strong safety" by Dan Ryan Wood. Coach R might have a completely different look for us. Does anyone know about CJ Gum? I know he was hurt, but one of our "colorful commentators" on a broadcast quoted Adi saying he was the real stuff and would take over. It's difficult to tell about linebackers in spring drills where they are not allowed to crack heads, but some observations about quickness, range, and shape after a winter shifting heavy objects, and/or rehab, in Gum's case should be possible.
Mine eyes are on Dan Ryan Wood after seeing his high school resume' from St. Laurence in the Chicago Catholic League- an amazing string of All-conference, Defensive player of the year, etc. That is a tough conference. My recollection of the Catholic League when I was following Chicago high school football (in the Fifties, now), usually ranked them somewhere between the Big Ten and the NFL. I do know they used to draw 100,000 in Soldiers' Field for the city title game with the champion of the Public League.
   So,you guys, cough up!

The defense will certainly be different than what we've seen CC and NN run over the last 6-7 years.  Coach Raeburn reportedly is a cover 2 guy, so expect to see a more traditional 4-3-4 on defense this fall.

I watched CJ Gum play some snaps late in games that were out of hand last year before he got shelved...he's legit.  Wabash's tradition of strong linebacking should be in safe hands.

Fellas,

I am not holding back on you guys at all just don't have a bunch of gritty details.  Have heard Spring practice has gone very well and the O has really pushed to get the new system covered.  Coach Heig sounds like an O wiz and ER is digging in with the massive O-line.  I guess he is excited about both fronts and think that will be a definite strength.  The D is missing CJ (still rehabbing but big plans for sure - many said he would have been a starter by the latter part of the season) while Peterman & Kraft are both off campus in study programs - Philly I believe.

Recruiting front:  You know I cannot give details at this point in the year but I think ER's first class will be solid.  There are some big time guys with Wabash listed in the final 2 so we need those to come in.  The QB from Texas is one of the gems, the QB from Michigan is an athlete that should help, and this past week we landed a stud OL right out of Springfield OH which is great news!  Apparently it was Mount or Wabash and we got him - he just finished 7th in a national power lifting meet so he is a beast.  I think the staff's focus, among some need areas, is speed in the specialy positions and adding depth in the D backfield.  We are also at a point where we need financial aid packages to be strong and competitive.  I hope we compete with the school down 231 because some of our key guys have it to Bash or them.  $$$ talks.  We have some talented North/South All Stars that are on the hook as well...DE's, a DT, and a Safety that would be immediate impact.

That is all I have for now.  The staff is solid and still adjusting to the changes.  ER seems more and more comfortable and I am excited to see how this first class shakes out and then how we roll.

A lot of the team building stuff has continued which is great to hear.
