The new president at OWU might hold the cards for Bishop football. If he is a football guy, then he may fix the grant-in-aid- situation. I was told Witt puts together a $25k plus package while OWU puts a $15-$17k deal on the table. Admissions needs to be looked at w/o sacrificing quality. AD Ingles has been in place for a few yrs & wins All-Sports Trophies w/o football... do we want more than a "we compete" program. I think he does. The lights/high school playoffs/community access at Selby is just window dressing. If OWU truly wants championship caliber football; coaching, recruiting, facilities, alumni/community involvement & promotion need to be addressed. When Capital (all Ohio roster/many form Columbus area) , Mt. Saint Joseph, ONU & MUC have blown by the Bishops...there is no reason why the Bishops can't be an elite program.. One (1) NCAC co-championship (1989) & four (4) OAC titles (1971,'67,'53,'51) leaves a lot to be desired. The infrastructure for great Bishop football is there...school location-central Ohio w/access to Columbus for job careers, Ohio HS f-ball, deep-pocket alumni, Selby & 25,000 people in Delaware. Maybe I saw it 2 yrs ago at Homecoming. The promotion for the weekend was...come back to campus...see a soccer game, lax...a play. Football was served almost as a side dish... that showed me the priority. Championship football can be attained at Ohio Wesleyan....but who or what will it take to get there.... is the problem that needs to be resolved.

aueagle,

This is d3.  If they boost grants to fb players by 8-10K, they'd better do it for every other student as well, or they'll quickly be on probation.  Can they afford that sort of increase across-the-board?

Ohio Wesleyan University-2008-09

$33,240 Tuition (2008-09)
$8,270: Room and board (2008-09)
$25,626: Average total aid package
95: Percentage of students receiving OWU financial aid
$23 million: Amount of OWU financial aid awarded to students during 2006-2007
$25,000: Amount of average total aid award to students

Mr. Ypsi: Maybe they can afford too...Even a $5-$8K is something to work with. Summer job program...making Methodist monies available...something. I see fuzzy math in here. Somebody has $15 million somewhere.

Is it too late to add it to the bailout bill?

Wow. I forgot all about it. I'll have to see what I can do about this.

I know it's too early to talk about the Bell game.  However, I have a couple questions.  Why is Wabash already selling tickets and DPU sells theirs starting 27 October ?  Are they all general admission so I can purchase mine from Wabash ?  Finally, can you park RVs the night before and where are good locations to spread out a bit?  I don't have a need to be right at the stadium as I have a dozen older folks (like 70 plus)that will sit in chairs outside if the weather is nice.  Last year we had a great spot in DPUs lot.

Let me know.

The seats are general admission to a certain extent.  Two different sets of tickets are printed for the game.  One set is red and gets you in on the Wabash side of the field.  One set is gold and gets you in on the DePauw side of the field.  The separation is necessary because Wabash fans and DePauw fans go together about as well as chocolate and tuna fish.

My understanding about the way the ticket sales work is that each school has their allotment of tickets and can sell them in a fashion that they see fit.  This year, Wabash started selling their tickets last weekend.  DePauw is apparently going to not put their allotment of tickets on sale to the general public until later in October...that is all at the discretion of the institution.

As for parking...I can't speak to the particulars on that.  I'd wait and see if anything about it gets put out in a press release as we get closer to gameday.

Unless they are currently shorting football players, which happens at a lot of schools.

Good article by Keith McMillan on the program at Trine. Roster size from 29 to 172!!!.....Attendance from 700 to a high of 4300.....Players & coaches into community involvement...Hands-on, hard hitting recruiting? Explosive offense? Could this be the blue-print for a program that needs success on the gridiron to follow? From NAIA to making an impact on NCAA D3...way to go Thunder!

I thought the requirement was that aid to athletes had to be in line (in either direction) with the student-body overall.  Do a lot of schools stiff fb and make it up on other sports, or are they simply out of compliance (or do I misunderstand the rule)?

WOW!  D3 really IS the anti-D1!  They can pamper the 'jocks' - we can screw 'em! >:(

I suppose for athletic enforcement it sorta makes sense that they only pay attention to TOO MUCH aid, but that sucks!

What if a potential student is ranked first in his HS class, has 800 on SAT verbal, has 800 on SAT math, has filthy rich parents and is a football player? Can a DIII football college give this player a free ride (a deal the college claims it is willing to grant to similarly academically situated non- football players but in fact is not granting because of its claimed lack of any such non- football player desirous of attending the college) without running afoul of the NCAA? I bet not.

No. But apparently they could NOT give him a free ride even if a non-football player with similar credentials WOULD get a free ride.

frank, I think you misread the discussion.
