let's all agree, with what has happened at Wabash last week, and a year ago...it's not all about drinking the Kool Aid...

Congrats to you! Nice game. Nice team. I wish you well the rest of the season and hopefully the playoffs!

Yes, disappointed in the play calling ....... sometimes I just don't get it. Why were we using up the entire play clock?  We needed the time, don't waste it.

We lost to a good team.

I'm sure the parents of those two young men are glad you made that point.

Back to the regularly scheduled programming ;D

First, congratulations to Case on the win and keeping the fish. What follows is in no way meant to take away from their efforts today. Second, despite the score, the stats are surprisingly equal. On paper, these two teams matched up pretty well. As we all know, what is on paper doesn't always tell the true story.

Today's headline should read: "Schmitz Quits on Reeling in the Fish"....

Down 21-0 at the half, there had to have been a decision made by the coaching staff to defy a quote from Coach Schmitz in the Wooster Daily Record after last week's match up: "I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty". Today, the decision was to lose by 21 rather than to make an all out effort to win. Wooster quickly came out and drove down the field to score on their first possession, making the score 21-7. Wooster then instituted, and doggedly stuck with, an offense that would have been appropriate for a team that was up by 40 points, constantly running the play clock down to nothing before the snap, long drawn out unproductive drives that consumed huge amounts of time. No sense of urgency, no deviation from the standard 3x5 card playbook, no attempts at plays that had worked pretty well in some previous games. Nope, they simply chose to run out the clock on a game they were losing!!!! Anyone watching the game without any idea what the score was, would never have guessed that Wooster was behind. It had to have been the most bizarre display of offensive coordinating I have ever seen in a football game.

Tony Sutton comes along once in a lifetime. A cadre of players like Watson, Mizak, Schaffer, Vitalbo, Craig, and Drushal come along together once in a blue moon. The rest of the time, coaches have to coach up the team they have recruited. I would imagine it's hard to coach up anyone when your actions look like you gave up on them.

At some point practice needs to be about coaching and getting to work on improving the team. Coaches laughing and throwing balls back and forth, playing trivial pursuit with each other, allowing players to dwindle onto the practice field and setting up scout team plays where you try to pretend there are receivers here and there, instead of actually having people there, does not set an example of being serious about having individuals and a team rise to their highest potential and show some improvement week to week. Being nice guys isn't enough  It's interesting to me that it seems to be the Wooster standard, that however the team looks coming out of fall camp, is pretty much how they look at the end of the year. There is a difference between coaching and caretaking. There's dignity in losing when you give your absolute best effort. Coaches set the example for what that best effort should look like. Today, they fell dismally short.

GO SCOTS!!!!!

ScotLass-- The "Q" word did come to my mind.  But I left it to the Scot faithful to make the call.  Getting the TD on the first drive of the second half made it "game on."  But when CWRU responded, it did seem that any strategy to win was abandoned.  Not to lay blame on the players, but there was a fourth down play when Holter looked to have a good shot at running for the first down, but instead tried a deep pass to a covered receiver.

As you say the stats were even, but the Spartans buttoned up the offense and gave up a lot of meaningless yards on D in the second half guarding against the big play.  Early in the game the Scots did move the ball, but had no third down conversions in the first half.   And the Scots' D was the best CWRU has faced this year.

cwru70: agreed.

On player performance, I would submit that the issues and mistakes made simply go on, with no significant improvement game to game. The only real improvement I saw today was the fact that we didn't have a TD called back due to holding for the first time this season. ;) The second half game plan falls solely at the feet of the co-offensive coordinators.

For Case, I thought their offense was a little disappointing today.  They looked OK running the ball at times, but Whalen was definitely off.  He made a few good throws, but he missed on some pretty easy passes, which is very rare for him.  Even a couple of his completions were bad passes where the receivers made a nice catch.  Also, I thought their play calling was strange.  They abandoned the run in the second half after having some success, and when chewing up the clock would have made sense.  They completely abandoned the wide receiver screen as well.  I also don't like the designed draws for Whalen, especially coming off a leg injury.  I can't be too down on them, though, as they did enough to win convincingly, and Nicely had a great game as usual.  The defense also was very good, as they have been all year.  They gave up some yards, but they forced turnovers and tightened things up on 3rd and 4th down to get the job done.  Giving up only 7 to an offense like Wooster's is a great game.

For Wooster, I thought that their quarterback had a cannon but questionable accuracy and threw a lot of wobblers.  The receivers also dropped a few balls early, but sometimes this can be partially the quarterback's fault if he's not throwing spirals.  The running game was decent, and the QB can run as well.  Their second half strategy was very odd.  They did run the playclock down a lot, but they were passing every down, so it wasn't like they were just trying to run the clock out.  After Case answered the early 2nd half TD from Wooster and went back up 21 right away, Case looked happy to run the ball for a while and play soft in the secondary.  Wooster did what they had to and took the underneath passes, and moved the ball fairly well a couple times before Case locked down the D.  It was just strange that Wooster didn't get up to the line and try to hurry things along.  It wasn't so much their playcalling I found odd as their lack of urgency.

Great win for Case, though.  They are well on their way to another 10-0 season, basically with just Wash U left as somewhat of a challenge.

so, on a lighter note, when do we find out what kind of fish is added to the stringer?  any suggestions?

From ScotsLass' discourse on the game, perhaps an alewive or gobi?  ;)

I like trout.  Particularly trout almondine.  But the water, brook stream or otherwise, really isn't cold enough in Indiana.  The flesh gets kinda spongy in water with any warmth whatsoever.

My suggestion, Mahi Mahi with a side of June Jones.  ;)
