wab64,

It's interesting that you mentioned Phi Beta Kappa.

CWRU actually has, to the best of my knowledge, Ohio's oldest Phi Beta Kappa chapter.  It was originally affiliated with Western Reserve University prior to their merger with Case Institute of Technology.

Sadly, I was not eligible for Phi Beta Kappa, being a Management major.  I was a member of Golden Key National Honor Society.

But you're right.  The UAA schools are all comprehensive universities.  I know that Case has MORE graduate and professional students than undergrads, although I'm not sure that that's true of all the UAA members.  In any event, that's what makes us different from conferences like the NCAC or NESCAC.  Those conferences consist of liberal arts colleges as opposed to comprehensive universities.

It is similar down here in "Sodom on the 'Hooch."  7-800 frosh and sophs are sequestered 38 miles west of the main campus at Oxford College of Emory University and athletes particpate in the NJCAA DIII programs.  On the Druid Hills / Decatur campus, there are about 6600 undergraduates and 6000 graduate and professional students amongst the Emmorhoid populace.

I mentioned PBK because the NCAC sets quite a store by the distinction, which it is. a relatively small number of 4 year institutions have chapters, which are rigorously selected. About 270-280, I think.
Sorry you got blackballed with your management major. "High attainments in liberal scholarship" is how they put it. I am proud to say I became a member at Wabash.
These days, majors keep getting stranger. The college in Ashland, Wisconsin- Northland College has a major in Outdoor Education, which offers a credit course in Backpacking. Having served six months with an infantry company in Vietnam, I think I should be entitled to a master's degree in backpacking, at the very least. ::)

I suspect that the UAA schools would see Denison, Kenyon, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster, and perhaps Allegheny as having similar student profiles.  I don't know if the lure of a football Pool A berth matters to the UAA schools, but if it does they could get it by adding three teams for football only.  It might even be possible for those teams to rotate every few years.  That might be accomplished by adding teams from NCAC perhaps with dual membership.  The only other teams that might be available would be Frostburg, Salisbury, and Wesley, but they wouldn't be considered academically compatible.   A fourteen team superconferece doesn't produce a second Pool A berth which would be the rationale for UAA to add football members.

I wasn't eligible either, although my major had nothing to do with it!  :)

thanks bashbrother for the offer.

So no more responses to my request are required.

wab64,

HOOOAH!!!!

You definitely deserve a Ph.D degree in Backpacking, and "summa cum laude" recognition for being a great American hero after all you've been through!!!

:D

I'm an Army Major myself (hence the name "Major Spartan").  Logistics Corps.  I did two deployments in Kuwait in support of OIF.  I'm in Command and General Staff College now.  When I finish that up, I could be headed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

BashBro, what if Mrs. BashBro forces another departure from the computer this weekend?  :)  Fijidoc - I may email you if you want a back up.

Read that article...no good bulletin material really.  McKinley says "whoever wants it more."

Wally/BashBro - keys to the game...match-ups, advantages, concerns, etc.??

If any Wabash fans are leaving/driving through Indy Saturday morning and want a person to chip in on fuel costs, PM me.  My buddies flaked out and I don't want to waste fuel driving over there by myself.  Thanks!

16 -

Mrs. Bashbro was given options.  #1. - I can fly up and watch the game   OR   #2.  I will fill the fridge with Miller Lite, she will take the kids to Miami and I will pipe the game through my stereo that is wired throughout the house.

as far as keys for the game:

Offensively

1.   Lemond on the deep post (Witt has yet to stop this route...ever....CC called it "Witt") - If Lemond is not there someone else will be.
2.   Run the ball - keep the offense balanced.
3.   Score early and often, control the clock.
4.   Limit penalties - There will be lots of emotion and trash talking early,  stay disciplined.
5.   No turnovers.  On paper Wabash is the superior team, we can't equal the playing field with mistakes.

Defensively

1.  Pressure on the Witt QB - rattle him early
2.  Stop the run, force the pass.
3.  Limit big plays
4.  Force at least one turnover.

It's breakdown time...

- The ability of Wittenberg's defensive line to keep Wabash's offensive line off of McKinley will be critical for Witt to keep Wabash's rush game in check.  And Wittenberg will most certainly have to keep Wabash's rush game in check if they are to have any chance.  If the LGs get anywhere near their season average in rushing yardage, it'll be a long day for the Tigers.

- In a similar fashion it will be key for Wabash to be able to keep Witt's rushing game in check without having to bring in help from the secondary.  Wittenberg has two very good wideouts capable of making big plays.  Wabash's corners and safeties will need to keep their attention on those guys.

- Pressuring the quarterback will be a factor.  Hudson hasn't been pressured all year.  Brumfield seems like he's capable of making some mistakes if you can squeeze him a little bit.

- Speaking of Brumfield....Wittenberg has no chance if they don't get good quarterback play.  Not adequate quarterback play because that won't cut it.  They need good quarterback play.

- Poise will be a key.  Wittenberg lost their poise and took some stupid penalties last year...penalties that, in a seven point game, were pretty critical.  Both of these teams are too good to be given extra yards and first downs.

- And as always, all big games are won with special teams and turnovers.   ;)

I mentioned this in my little blurb on my picks, but it's worth repeating here....if Wabash is top 5-ish as the polls say they are, they should be able to go to Springfield and take care of a Wittenberg team that has no identity at quarterback and is beat up on the offensive line and other places as well.  I believe that it is going to take Wittenberg's best game to be competitive on Saturday.  Wabash will have to be forced into uncharacteristic mistakes.  Wittenberg is going to have to be more physical than the LGs and win the matchups on the lines (nobody has been close this year).  If Wabash doesn't match Wittenberg's intensity, the game gets interesting (I'm thinking back to last year's Bell game...the LGs were too lethargic on that day and they paid for it).  I'm just having a hard time seeing all of those things happening.

I suspect Wabash web site connections will be overwhelmed.  Witt, being at home, may not suffer the same web site fate.  Does Witt have video or audio?

wally_wabash

Excellent piece, as always, from Howard Hewitt previewing the game.  From his keys to the game it sounds like we're all pretty much on the same page.

wabco- Witt offers both audio and video...there should be links to those on the scoreboard page on d3football.com as well as at the Wittenberg website.
