Wow, I didn't realize that my post would cause such a ruckus.  First off let me respond to black n gold and say that my choice of username may have been in poor taste as I created it based simply off of the topic area I intended to discuss for that i apologize.  Let it also be known that it was not my intention to personally attack anyone.  I would agree that Holter is a great competitor and athlete it is just my opinion that he is somewhat careless with the football at critical points in games.  Sometimes the Scots are able to overcome these turnovers and sometimes they are not.  Based on the write up from the Wabash game on the COW website, 4 interceptions were thrown by the Scots in addition to 2 fumbles.  Turning the ball over against a quality opponent will almost certainly result in a loss.  It seems that turnovers seem to come in bunches with this team and my thoughts about sitting Holter were made as an analogy to basketball in which a point guard will be sat down for a few minutes to calm down and shake it off.  I think Scotlass hit the nail on the head with the comparison of turnover numbers from last year to this year.  There has not been any improvement in that area.   Enough talk about QBs does anyone have other thoughts about the lack of an under center package for the Wooster offense?

I think that it's important to keep in mind that while Holter did throw 4 INTs against Wabash, the two that I distinctly remember were tipped up by a receiver (the one Wabash returned for a TD that put the game out of reach) and then the last one on the final play of the game that didn't matter at all (which I remember because I always groan when one of my fantasy qb's throws an end of half/game INT that costs me points for no good reason  ;)).  I don't think you can hang those two INT's squarely on Holter and I think also that Holter was put in a tough position against Wabash by having to chase for the entired second half.  Playing catch up, at least to me, doesn't appear to be what Wooster's offense is best suited to do.  They're a run first team and when you get down two scores to Wabash, you kind of have to get away from that strength and start wingin' the football.

I think the biggest thing to look at here when considering Holter is that the things that he's taking criticism for here (and rightly so...I'm certainly not saying that he shouldn't be accountable) are things that are correctable.  You can learn to protect the football better when you're running with it.  You can practice and get more accurate with your throws.  I don't think this is a case where the player is simply just not suited to play the position at this level.

Your analogy to a point guard is interesting.  I think the difference here is that over the course of a basketball game, your team is going to get somewhere around 80 possessions.  You can afford to sit your point guard down for a handful of those possesions without having gone a significant amount of time without your best player on the floor.  In football, you get somewhere around a dozen possessions in a game.  Any time that you sit your best player down is going to amount to significant time...every possession is important in football.

Don't expect an under center package for Wooster's offense any time soon- barring another RB like Sutton coming along, we'll be in a spread, read option offense for the foreseeable future. Seeing the recruits we've brought in; mobile QBs and no FBs or primarily blocking TE's, especially, it looks like we're locked in for a few years.

short

Holter is going to be the front runner along with Hudson for NCAC OPY! 8-2 is a great season after finishing 4-6 last season.  Holter is a Junior and Wabash is losing some great players so let him play though it.  Next season he will need to be great vs Case and Wabash.

The Defense has be awesome all season (minus a few big play).  Coach Barringer brings so much attitude and toughness to this group.  When you add that with Craig and Duerr your going to have success.    I look for Wooster to be the front runner in the NCAC (along with Wabash) in 2009.  Don't be surprised if Wooster is 9-1 or 10-0 next season.

8-2 would be a very good season for Wooster.  But I think that we may be putting the cart way way way ahead of the horse here by assuming that they are going to be beating Wittenberg.  Wittenberg flat out put it on the LGs for 55 minutes which is about 55 minutes longer than anybody else has done all season.  Do not sleep on Wittenberg...those guys are really good.

enough about witt...woo...and next year!!
when does the bell board open?
not looking past hiram...but dying to get the bell back where it belongs!

did anyone notice when we beat witt by last sec fg... we felt like we played poorly...
but the dannies last year thought they won the super bowl?

WAF78

Old Wabash...when you aren't going to the playoffs...it IS DPU's super bowl. Besides...they spoiled our undefeated season...which is something you don't get to do every year.
I agree...I'm looking forward to the Bell game...for lots of reasons. I think Wabash will come into this game with a different mindset this year.  DPU is a good team...their only two loses so far have been to ranked opponents...and Millsaps may well be the 2nd or 3rd best team in the country this year. But hey...for DPU...7-3 is a good year and to lose to three ranked opponents in one year is nothing to be bummed about. I'm hoping there will be an all time record crowd at Hollett...over 12,000 for the game would be great.
However...first things first...Go Wabash, beat Hiram.

I had no idea DePauw's D gives up over 29 points per game.  Hmmmmm.  They have won a lot of close games this season to a lot of very mediocre teams.  It is easy to sit here and say, they have only lost to Trinity and Millsaps (2 ranked opponents) but I think there may be more to it.

I do apologize for momentarily being confused by the thread title "North Coast Athletic Conference".....it's easy to get confused and think it is for posting by fans of all teams in the conference.  ::)

Glad you're such an expert on DePauw's schedule. Bottom line is they won. I know it's not like playing the power schedule that Wabash plays and putting 60 on a team like Oberlin (apologies to Oberlin fans), but that's a challenge few teams can handle. ;D

Is it true that Wabash Coach Eric Raeburn is the nephew of the head guy at Mt. Union - Larry Kehres? - That is a pretty good pedigree.

took the words right out of my mouth... seeing as how we performed against teams like Earlham, even looking past Oberlin could be a horrible mistake, much less counting Witt as a win before the clock hits 0:00.

Geezer...yes...that is true. I'm so glad we were able to get ER to come to Wabash. I thought CC was a great coach and I was sorry to see him leave. But I think ER is the guy who can build on what CC did and take us a bit higher and farther.

I, for one, would love to see the Witt-Woo game...but I'll be occupied at another game that day. If Woo limits the turnovers, it'll be a great game. Witt's D is pretty stout...that McKinley guy is like omni-present...and for such a little guy...he can really hit.

This week's games will be very interesting...Adrian vs. Trine; Mount Union vs. Otterbein among others.

WAF78 -

Thanks for the info. I believe that ER was a great hire for Wabash. I also liked CC. They both took the program and seemingly made it better.
