As little as I know about DIII Football, I know less about the Centennial Conference and Western Maryland, but that is still a shame to hear about someone breaking their leg in practice.  How does that happen to a qb?  Sounds like a case of bad luck.
Does Dickinson still run the option, not the shotgun read version, as their primary offense?  This probably shows how little I really know about the teams in this conference.  It seems like an 'outdated' offensive attack (even Nebraska does not run it anymore), though I still like using it on my Xbox, which is also becoming outdated.

Splik,

Dickinson no longer runs a primary option offense.  My freshman year was the last year that they ran the double wing option look.  They have since switched over to a pro style offense.  They do still have some option looks especially now that they have mitchell at QB who can make big plays with his feet.

I got to see my first Centennial conference game over the weekend. Dickinson vs McDaniel. Dickinson looked real strong in the first half getting out to a 19-0 lead and it looked like it was going to be a blow out, but  then they made a few mistakes and let McDaniel HANG AROUND to make things interesting before winning. Although McDaniel had the size advantage on the line, the Dickinson players were clearly more Athletic. There was a time when the opposite was true and McDaniel was heads and shoulders above the entire conference in that category. I was impressed by Dickinson's QB Mitchell. He ran the spread offense well. McDaniel's back up QB played better as the game went on.

This week's picks, for whatever reason as the season goes on ,the picks seem harder to make.

DICKINSON over Moravian (should be a good one)
F & M over Catholic
URSINUS over Gettysburg(this could go the other way as well)
MULENBERG over JHU( the mules are picking up steam)
JUNIATA over McDaniel( Murph I think this is your week!)

Mitchell was well-regarded coming out of high school and earned his spot at the QB after a year as a WR.  For Dickinson, it's been a growth in the offense after YEARS, probably more like decades, of RUN RUN RUN.  The stats this year show they can do both, or one more than another, on demand.

Early postseason advantage to the winner in Saturday's game.

You're not much of a physicist - Force = mass*acceleration, therefore lack of mass can be overcome by acceleration.  Not sure how that applied to the football field yet or at least offensive line play, I am just a stickler for Newton's Laws of Motion.  :P
As for being a parent and saying your sons team doesn't deserve to win from the way they played...maybe it's just me, but that seems like a poor or harsh choice of words.
I don't know if it's fair to bounce back and forth between your criticism of the starting tailback and the small offensive line.  I think I know when you mentioned about the starter being replaced and the running game starting to work.  However, that was just two plays, you can not really determine a lot from that.
As for the current coaching staff.....at least the women's volleyball team is still good.

This board is way different than the MAC.  I haven't read anything about Widener or Lycoming in such a long time I might be going through withdrawal.  Do Centennial alumni have more to do than talk about their alma maters' football teams?   :P

Can't you tell Murphy is frustrated. He is not rooting against his son's team, he is only doing what we all do "second guessing the coaches". I did it myself last night at my daughter's High School soccer game. It is nothing a "few wins" can't cure. I think Juniata gets their first win this Saturday against McDaniel. Most of the players from Juniata probably came from winning High School programs and when you go 0-3 to start the season you start to question the players, coaches, play calling etc.

You do become a product of the enviroment.  A winning team will keep winning until something changes in that enviroment and thus the same for a losing program. It is not always the internal ie.. coaches or players. Sometimes lack of noise from fans, because there are none, causes players to think this is just another practice and lose focus on the game. The games I have attened so far had plenty of fans at three different stadiums. I hope that is the case for all of Centennial Conference teams.

I got the chance to make the Dickinson game this past saturday and what was said earlier is certainly true, early on it looked like Dickinson was going to roll over McDaniel.  However, it seemed some Dickinson players lost focus, subs were put in, and the play calling changed to a much more conservative grind it out type game plan.  The combination of those things let McDaniel creep back in.  Even with the final score it never really seemed like the game was in doubt, but if you're a Dickinson fan you were certainly left looking for more in a game that could/should have been a blow out.  I think next week will be a really tough test against a very solid Moravian team.

Picks:

Week 5 Schedule
Dickinson @ Moravian - Maybe a biased pick, but I think the Devils will raise the bar.
Catholic @ Franklin & Marshall   - As much as I hate to pick the Dips its hard to bet against them when they are playing Catholic
Gettysburg @ Ursinus - Two similar styles of football pound it out running games, should be a good one.
John Hopkins @ Muhlenberg - Have to go with Muhlenberg their defense looks impressive.
Juniata @ McDaniel - With McDaniel already struggling and now minus their one offensive threat in Baer I can see Juniata pulling it out even on the road in McDaniels bowl.

Red Devils 07

Murphy,

I don't know where you hail from and I don't know your travel plans,  but I would suggest you trying to get to McDaniel to see your son and Juniata play.  Although the fans can be a little obnoxious they have a pretty cool stadium.  The field is built into a depression forming a bowl and cars can drive up fairly close to the edge.  The atmosphere seems pretty cool, and although I have never seen a game there from the stands playing there was a neat experience.

If you are going to McDaniel...

1) Go early and hit Baugher's across the road for breakfast. Fiigure out a way to keep a half gallon of their chocolate peanut butter ice cream cold for the next 12 hours.
2) After breakfast, drive Main Street past the stadium into town, and hit Giulianova for Italian sausage, rolls, or the only hoagie in Maryland.
3) Arrive at the Stadium between 10:30 and 11 for a good spot on the bowl.
4) Take a chair and/or blanket, a charcoal grill, several oat sodas and a plastic cup.

ok then

I was reviewing the statistics of the first few games and not surprised by what I saw. Seems the undefeted teams are above the mix in some and a few suprises in others. I am not going to praise or comment for I am sure all of you can come to different results. After reading the above I will state I am a PSU grad with no children in a DIV III school.
Just like small school football.

Thank you for the incisive commentary, old ends.

I think Chuck Knox should be considered for the job in Huntingdon.
