Drake:

I say again, the dunk was routine.

Let me tell you a story.  Freshman year of college we were running the 3 on 2, 2 on 1 drill in practice to warm-up.  Coming down on the 3 on 2 is Keith Eckhoff on one wing and me on the other.  Pass goes to Eckhoff and one defender smartly tracks right onto him (kid's money) the other defender backs up to the basket.  Keith decides to throw the alley-oop to me cutting in from the wing because he's a good roommate.  He had a man all over his face, and a tall defender protecting the basket.  He pinpointed that sucker right on time so I caught it and dunked it.  All I had to do was run and jump, beaner put that ball on a postage stamp.  All the coaches immediately congratulated beaner on his "nice pass."

Archer ran and jumped and caught.  Those are all easy things.  Viau (or whoever threw that) waited a half-second too long so had to throw the pass form his hip on a flatter line in order to get it to archer on time.  It was a clear case of "that was a much better pass than a dunk."  The alley trumped the oop.

I also had the good fortune to be sitting near steve strom.  archer can jump, strom can explode and float.  So i asked him, "did you ever dance after a dunk?"  he said no.  i guess he expected it to happen.

Sheesh - you legalistic scribes & Pharisees.  The entire sequence: The defense, the run, the pass, the finish.  ;D Besides, your personal situation you just described took place during practice in a controlled environment.  The Archer play took place in a real game in an unfriendly, hostile gym.  ;)

C'mon it's Bethel, what did you expect him to say?  ;D ::) :D :D

You bring up a good point though, north metro St. Paul leapers - Alex Weaver, Steve Strom?

I'm kinda partial to Weaver since he looked like an accountant out there on the court & his looks belied his leaping abilities.  With Strom, he looked like a wiry strong kid, salivating, just looking for a chance to dunk on somebody.

Are you seriously that bitter that you're wasting your time critiquing how good or bad an alley-oop play was? The pass was made and the basket scored, enough said.

WW,

I'm going to let the Duke fan in me come out here. I personally don't see how Henderson's elbow was anything flagrant. Was it hard? Absolutely. Was he trying to hurt somebody? Absolutely not. It was help-side defense, and Hansbrough was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Love the Blue Devils beating Carolina, but they can't rely on heaving 3's from everywhere, even though they went in. Thomas was as good as he needed to be inside to give them what little inside presence they have.

easy there, big fella. there's a word for that kind of imputation of personal anguish: "projection."  don't you go projecting your bitterness on me.

what are we supposed to talk about here on d3hoops.com? basketball, division 3 basketball, miac basketball, miac basketball games that we've been to, reflections from the games, things other posters are reflecting on....

Mr. Sager - I'm also a fan of c-mob's grammar and spelling...I think c-mob knows that but I'm glad you have his back. I added the wink because I was kidding and took the bait to poke fun at the grammar police that occasionally visit the bored. Sorry about missing the comma and period.    :D

Duke = Classy.

A few observations about the Gustie game last night.

• Holland scored 7 straight points for SMU early in the game with some sick jumpers. He was the only one who played even relatively well for them.
• GAC went on something like a 53-19 "run" after trailing 21-19.
• Doble shot 8 of the first 9 times he touched the ball.
• SMU had absolutely no intention of playing defense last night off the ball. Kane scored like 8 layups on simple cuts to the hoop.
• SMU warmed up like they were playing in friendship bowl of the intramural league.
• Winona State fans littered the crowd last night, making it feel like a Gustie home game. Two crazies painted their bodies black and chanted for Drinkall all game...until former SMU coach Biebel told them to shut up.
• Nick Carr started inside for SMU and did nothing. Wasn't he supposed to be a star if given PT?
• SMU assistant Nigel Jenkins was stranded in a snowstorm between Illinois and Winona last night on a recruiting trip gone bad.

Greg Oden's commercial is hilarious.

Willy-- were you in attendance at last nights game? If so, has Schmidtknecht been playing that well all year? I remember when I was at the game in St. Peter, I don't even remember his seeing the floor.  Seems to have a good lookin shot, and he's a lefty which makes him even tougher to guard!

Old school UNC/Puke games are on ESPN Classic right now. Kenny Smith really *did* used to be a jet.

Paulus is easily the most annoying player in college basketball right now, sliding in to replace Reddick. Even my Duke friends admit this, though Wojo invented this esteemed position.

The SMU Mess

Disclaimer: This is from people with knowledge of the situation, though this does not include the main players involved — namely, Rohr, Cormier, Trewick or his staff.

• Gustavus did not play a JV game last night against SMU. The Gustie JV coach said St. Mary's had "like 6" guys quit/kicked off and did not have the numbers. I'm not sure if they played a JV game in the last meeting, but this would seem to suggest the exodus was more than the two senior captains.

• Former SMU coach Biebel was in the house last night. Cormier and Rohr were not, unless they were sporting some solid disguises. Great commitment.

For the record, I quit football my senior season at GAC and still saw every single game of a losing team. Basically, I'm qualified to make such criticism. Hate the circumstances, support your former teammates.

• The article in the Winona paper was prompted by an angry letter from an SMU fan telling a completely one-sided story. That fan was Cormier's mom.

In perhaps the biggest revelation...Cormier refused to enter the game the day before getting kicked off the team, begging the question of whether you can really be kicked off a team on which you refuse to play? While it's arguing semantics, the senior captain seems to have quit before being booted.

• While I criticized Trewick for refusing comment in the published story, this now seems like a good decision. Regardless, the situation remains extremely messy.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Skibbity - Wonka was in the house. Didn't you see him looking for skeletons in the closet? :)

pabegg, the question was posed earlier this week on the MIAC board about Gustavus getting a Pool C bid. My answer based on your earlier rankings was.. "The MIAC is a one team league this year, unless St. Thomas gets upset in the conference tournament".

Gustavus would be the only team that would appear to be given consideration. What are your thoughts?

Thanks
I would think that Gustavus would be a Pool C contender with one more loss. Two losses would probably be too many, so they have to beat St. Thomas either in the regular season game or in post-season.

St. Thomas has two fewer losses, so the logic is almost identical: out with 4 losses, contender with 3, definitely in with 1 or 2 (and obviously a Pool A with 0).

Both schools have a strength of schedule that is almost exactly .5000, so they don't get ay help from that quarter.

The latest word on the Gusties chances for a Pool C bid. pabegg is the poster that runs the simulations on regional rankings.

Paulus does not even come close to matching Spencer Tollackson in the annoying catagory.
