I know this question is completely random, but does anyone have any picks for the best refs in the MIAC as far as quality? Or maybe some have favorites based on other intangibles, such as dramatics, personality, toughness, or debater? Just wondering because I know nothing about those men in black and white.

Good question Shocker...most of what you see here on the board are rants as to who has blown a call or is a poor official...

I like Pat Bauschelt...veteran with a cool head gets alot of crap for his perfect hair, he lets guys play...

Mike Spanier does a very good job, he used to be a Big 10 reff...he is an NFL ref

Lewis Garrison does a quality job...I don't think he will be long for the MIAC on a consistent basis

Curt Seter is alot like Bauschelt...

Bob Schoeve has done a pretty good job recently, early on I was not sure I really liked him but he has done well in some playoff games I have seen.

Rob Kunneman is a good young official, consistent and tries to sell his calls...

I am sure there are others...

Hopefully in the next few years, we can resurrect this topic, and I can find my name on this list.  This year was my inagural year as an official. (Highschool level- and as a rookie they keep you at the b/JV level).  I've enjoyed more than I thought I would.  And with some more experience, hopefully I can advance up to the collegiate level soon.

To Snow, SUM, VOJ - & the rest.. Ya'll are some serious hoops geeks to know the names of that many refs.  Because of the Tribune's Patrick Reusse, I've learned the infamous name of is it - Ed (?) Hightower who refs in the Big 10.  (By the way, I think his brother coaches basketball at Holy Angels.)  Then of course there's our own NBA ref - Kenny Mauer.

But until I resumed following the MIAC a few years ago, other than a few Spanier brothers & or cousins, & Steve "Stoney" Schneider, I didn't know the names of any basketball refs.  But now I can instantly recognize the fashion forward, custom uniform fitted Mark Bakko, & the glases or Lasik improved golden man - Brad Panning.  But you all have elevated the art of official spotting to a whole another level.  Snow - you sure you want to do this?

Refs, God bless em. We certainly need good ones.  ;D

Well, to fill in the dead posting air...

To get in my basketball fix, I took in a HS game last night between Bloomington Kennedy & Bloomington Jefferson, & watched Jefferson's U of MN football '09 signee, Moses Alipate, & SJU's recruit, Aaron Barmore.  Alipate's a nice basketball player, & I'm assuming a D1 football talent, but as a QB why would he sign with the Gophers?  With the Gophers signing a Top 50 blue-chip QB, Marquise Grey out of Indiana for 08, & they already have a young QB in Adam Weber, where does he think he's going to fit in? Alipate's build is similar to NFL QB, Matt Leinart, 6-5 240 lbs or so.  Although Alipate has good quickness for his size, I doubt he's gonna to be flying around running the spread option like Dennis Dixon did for Oregon or Tim Tebow for Florida.

why would one of this years top qb's in the army all american game go to ND to back up Claussen who he backed up in high school?  no matter where a qb goes there will always be competition and there will alway be injuries so i think it is best for a player to just go where he feels he enjoy playing and go to a place where you feel you can compete for that spot...i think he just feels he can compete for the starting spot

A-Snow, I logged 12+ years of HS FB and BB officiating! It is/was a lot of fun. The better you get and the better games you get the more fun it becomes. Between kids growing up an other commitments it got to be too much time. I needed to do 2-3 games a week to stay sharp.

I miss the officiating. I don't miss all the windshield miles!

New to the forum and have a question.  I see several scenarios where a tie breaker may be required to determine which team gets a playoff spot.    I understand the first three but not  the fourth tiebtreaker which is "Descending order of losses".  Can anyone explain what this means?

Drake - The one young man from Stillwater that you mentioned, Joel Armstrong, I believe signed with Winona State in the fall.

Top Row, I believe what this means is you compare the tied teams to see how they did versus the other teams in the league starting with the league champ.

So assume UST is #1, GAC, #2

Augsburg and Bethel are tied throught the first 3 tiebreakers, you then go and see how they did v. UST. assume UST beat them both 2X, then you see how they did against GAC. Assumer Bethel lost twice to GAC, while AUG split. Aug would win the tiebreaker.

DP or anyone else correct me if I am wrong.

Drake: When you say "SJU recruit Aaron Barmore" are you saying that you have info that Barmore is going to SJU? Because I know a few other teams in the MIAC are after Barmore's services.

Good point CMOB. +K   I am excited to see the Rodents football team in the next couple years.

Wouldn't that be the same as the 3rd tiebreaker which is "Results against teams above those tied in rank order"?  Maybe a mental block here and I am not understanding.

CMob – More power to Moses Alipate if the U is where he wants to go.  But in addition to the numbers of young players at the QB position, you've got the style of offense the U would like to run - a spread option offense.  Alipate's a decent running qb, but he's not a slasher & juker like this Grey appears to be, Dixon at Oregon, or has the power & speed of a Tebow at Florida.  I'm just hoping he's at a place where the system best fits his talents.  In any event, good luck to him.   If his younger brother Marcus continues to grow, he could be a real nice basketball player.  He's a 5-10 9th grader with nice handles & a sweet looking jumper.

Gbacker - unless I misread Local's' post from a few days ago (which he's accused me of in the past  ;))  here's what he had to say about Aaron Barmore:

Good morning to all.  Feeling a little under the weather, I took the day off to recover.  It's that time of the year I guess.

First off, a recruiting tidbit for Drake and all the other hardcore posters ;D  I caught up with some high school coaching friends of mine last night and among the things I learned is that Bloomington Jefferson senior Aaron Barmore will attend St. John's next year.  I have not seen Mr. Barmore play since the summer time, but it appears he's having a successful senior year at Jefferson.  Nice player from what I remember.  6-5 and very versatile.  Apparently most of the MIAC was recruiting him.  ...

Mose needs to come along & chime in on this but I believe Sum mostly got it right.

1) One of the tiebreakers is how the two tied teams fared against teams above them in the standings.

2) How the two tied teams did against the teams below them in the standings in descending order.  This allows the league to determine which team had the worst loss.

For example: Let's say Bethel & Augsburg both end up tied somehow at 10-10.   ;D

The league works their way through the various tiebreakers & let's say Bethel had a loss to last place SMU.  That would be a worse loss than Augsburg & Bethel both splitting with Hamline.

TopRow - I'm guessing you're a Bethel or Auggie backer. Am I right, wrong?  I'm hoping Bethel-Augsburg matchup is a monster last game of the regular season to determine who advances to the playoffs.   ;D ;D

QuoteI've also seen Stillwater play a couple of times & they have a couple of kids that could do well in th MIAC: 6-7 forward Joel Armstrong, & 6-3 2G Aaron Anderson.  I spotted UST coach, Johnny Tauer in the crowd checking out the Cretin-Stillwater game last Friday.

Joel will be playing for Winona.
