Wow...I had come to terms with the fact that Gustavus probably wasn't going to get in to the big dance after last night's loss, but after the Gustie women somehow sneaked in on the women's side, I think anything can happen, especially given GAC's win over Buena Vista.

You have to wonder what goes on in DIII sometimes...the GAC women is a perfect case in point...not in the regional rankings at all and definitely did not have a better in region record than CSB but they get in...so there is some hope for GAC's men(maybe its a two team parlay or something)

On officials...I am sure the J's have had Coombe but I can't remember him being an awful reff...the J's never win with Panning, or Yurkovich on a game that is all I know...in fact I have told many that if we are in a gym warming up and Panning, Yurkovich and Mark Bakko walk in...we should just forfeit

First of all, I would love to say congrats to UST on their great season, and I am excited that we will be even better in the years to come.  The domination is only beginning, so the next few years will be quite enjoyable.

Next, I can't believe that all of the GAC fans think there is some type of conspiracy against their team, and that the refs have it out for them.  That is absolutely ridiculous, you are just looking for excuses.  You should know that St. Thomas has been called for more fouls than their opponents in conference play 505 to 473.  The fact is you guys were out played by a better team. Stop making excuses.

Also, too many people are complaining about Teddy Archer, and are making terrible points I might add.

I have the privilege of knowing Teddy very well and he is the classiest person I know.  He is as good of a defender as the MIAC has and consistently gets the star players of the opposing team in foul trouble.  Maybe your players need to get stronger mentally if they can't handle a little bit of physical play.  He is a spark that every team in the MIAC would love to have.

I might also add that Teddy scored 10 points including, two free throws to tie the game with under a second left in regulation of the Tommie's HUGE win at Winona State (Something that none of your teams will ever get close to accomplishing) <------That's the skill you morons claim he is lacking.

Quit complaining just because YOUR teams can't dethrone the mighty Tommie's.

Bring it on guys!

Dynasty-

1.  you should do your own research on the posters on this board.  you will find some people in your list bleed true purple.
2.  if you think WW doesn't know what he's talking about, you are very ignorant.
3.  remember st. thomas, despite its latest success locally has been less succusful nationally. UST hasn't been to the final four since the 90's.  the gusties can claim going to the national championship, and almost claiming it.  their legacy is just as rich.
4. I can understand sticking up for your boy. But, having been involved with the program for over 6 years, I would love to intriduce you to some much classier and more skilled Tommies.
5.  Don't dish it out if you can't take it.  Calling people morons on this board will ignite some sparks.
6. You can't blame Gustavus fans for pointing out bad officiating.  If the tommie's lost that game, you can't tell me that wouldn't be one of the reasons you'd mention for the loss.  Players should adapt to officiating, but that requires the officiating to be consistent.

Yawn, umm, a couple of things Eric Ming Dynasty -

1) In your resentment  list you forgot to include Russian Ak47.  I might also add both Ak47 & Snow are respected, recent former UST basketball players. And other posters have some type of connection to UST.

2)  Everytime you log in to post your email address is displayed so it doesn't require a a CSI investigation to figure out who you might be. Terms of Service

3) And I quote you - "Bring it on Guys!"  In light of the Gusties' loss on Saturday night, I'm sure there are at least one or two Gusties fans & league fans who would love nothing more than to take out their frustrations on a hapless poster in over his head. Good luck, you'll need it.  ;)

Eric, my man.  You showed up to this board with a vendetta.  You insulted everyones opinion on this board, even listing the ones you have a problem with.  Usually people like to know other people on the board.  I don't know many of them but from being a reader and for this year a contributor to the board i think some of these guys work with a local paper or are sports journalists, and some are previous miac players.  Of course they are going to try to find out who is on the board because maybe they played with them, or against them.

correction with gustavus- not all the refs, just the one.  I found it to be playful banter, but maybe you took it a little too seriously.

Also people have already been on here and talked about Teddies class.  We only know him as the kid on the court, not the one off of it.  So we can only comment on the kid on the court and as you put it his emotions get the best of him.   Biased is used when a person doesn't even give credit to the teams his team faces.  No credit to Gustavus for playing a good game and entertaining you.  hence- Biased.

Perhaps the gac fans should drive a few miles down the road to New Ulm and watch a fan section with some innovative, somewhat classy and smart chants.  Martin Luther came in force to St. Paul for the championship game against my Northwestern guys and were easily louder than the 1000 NWC fans in attendance.

If Archer hadn't had any previous idiotic episodes, you could almost forgive him for getting out of hand if the opposing team's fans were chanting "f you" on his home-court.
AO (anolson@nwc.edu), meet your new understudy USTDynasty (erburtness@stthomas.edu).  You guys should have fun together.

I had the privilege of attending the MIAC championship game on Saturday night! Unfortunately  they were very busy down at  the Tap, so I missed the first three minutes of the game. Being I don't have the pull of Mose We ended up in the upper reaches of the Shoe. Great atmosphere for a basketball game. Congratulations to the Tommies for a great, if unexpected, season. Congratulations to the Gusties as well. Once the disapointment of this loss wears off and they have time to reflect, I am sure they will term this season succesful as well.

Tough to see Wittwer with his hands tied because of foul trouble. My one comment on the officiating................Like Snow mentioned earlier, officials have a specific area of the court they are assigned to watch. On Saturday, I thought several members of that crew may have been guilty of "following the ball". This leads to seeing things out of the corner of your eyes. Often times you are only seeing the reaction to an action or a "perceived" action. The end result is inconsistent calls. Judgement calls (block/charge) are judgement calls. 50% of the crowd is going to disagree with the call you make.

I thought Kane Sivesend played a whale of a game! With Wittwer hampered by fould trouble he tried putting the Gusties on his back he just couldn't keep them there.

On the Tommie side, Big Al, never ceases to amaze me. Like him or not, you have to respect the passion he plays the game with. He is a force down low with very soft, quick hands. A guy like Paulson should be able to eat Al up, but it never happened. The other two Tommies that impressed me were Halvorson and Eicher. Both have a very unorthodox looking shots, but both made some very key buckets for the Tommies.

The play of ther night had to have been Wittwer's block at about the 11:00 minute mark of the second half. That was an unbelievably athletic play.

Easy for me to say as a disinterested third party, but everybody remember, this was a good college basketball game played in a great setting with wonderful atmosphere.

this new kid is pretty entertaining, eh?  --perhaps someone should remind mr. Burtness of Archer's violations against classiness this year.  I doubt he's much different from the rest of the fair-weather tommie fans, so he probably did not make the trek up to Bethel this season on his bicycle.

Ok, I believe the "unofficial board truce period" of 36 hours for a fallen, respected opponent has expired. Prime Time -  I'm sure Word will come along as soon as he finishes eating the humble pie & crow he hunted up last week.  ;)

Back when I was the board's mudslinging rookie, I had the fortitude to talk trash before the game.

(And thanks largely to Willy, I couldn't make a prediction so ridiculous that it wouldn't come true).

It's hard to sift through all the crying and complaining on this board about last night's officiating from both UST and GAC fans.

I wasn't at the game so I'm in no position to comment on it, but it's up to the players to adjust to how the game is being called by the officials. If the Tommies were flopping and it's getting called, Gustie players should do a better job of not putting themselves in a spot to commit an offensive foul.

Go watch the game film before you make such comments, TH4L. GAC was up one and had just got a huge defensive stop with 1:24 left when Vaiu flopped — the last of about 15 such instances — after getting hit with the "Elbow of God." The Tommies hit a 3 about 4 seconds later.

Granted, the Gusties closed the game with three terrible possessions, but that call — moreso than any others — directly affected the outcome of the game. You can't say it changed the outcome — because that'd be a judgment call — but it's not unreasonable to say that was the biggest play in the UST victory. If that's a no-call (as the first two in the game were), I like my chances of walking away with a victory.

Quote from: TommieHoops4Life on March 03, 2008, 12:50:20 AM
Officials should never determine the outcome of any game, let alone a MIAC title game. If the Gusties missed opportunities down the stretch, did the refs really determine the outcome? And please, if you think they have vendettas against any team, you're pathetic.

UST won the game and GAC lost. That much is established. However, the Tommies also got a gift 3, Viau got away with hammering Wittwer on a dunk with 4:11 to play in a tie game and Schmidtknecht got tackled a few minutes earlier that led to a FB layup. That's a 7-point swing on what I felt were fairly blatant calls going against the Gusties.

For the record, I thought Wittwer's last foul was a good call. Frustrating, but the correct call.

Sounds like Mr. Archer was quite the character in this one. I wish you all knew the Teddy Archer I know. I've known him since he was 12 years old, and he does have a bit of a cocky side to him, but he's one of the nicest kids I've ever met.

Personally, I'm glad I don't know the Archer you claim to. The kid's an absolute clown who has been called out by both Gusties and Tommies and been dressed down by his coach on the bench. For the integrity of our league, I hope Fritz sends him to a Juco where his antics will cause fistfights instead of drawing our ire on here.

CON - Were you at the game? You seemed to back the flopping mentality after the first GAC/UST game at The Shoe, but I'd be curious to hear your take after this one.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Dynasty,
what were you thinking, I'm a newbie too, but I don't go attacking these other posters.  They've been posting for almost as long as you've been alive... they know more than you'll ever know about MIAC basketball.  just give us your opinions about the game and nothing more at this point.  Watch your boy in their next game and get back to us if you still think he's classy.

Also, it's prime time performer, not prime time player, but you would already know that since you've followed college hoops for so long.

WW, Was that you fraternizing with the enemy on Saturday night. I saw a gentlemen flying the GAC colors sitting with the big three from last years UST team?

i'm a st. thomas senior and i've watched this board for a while and i've gotta say, the officiating was horribly on both sides.

Dynasty, I agree, Teddy is just about the nicest kid you could ever meet off the court.

but, and a big but,

On the court he looks ridiculous - he flops like a dying fish - he flops like a european b league soccer player - he flops, for the love of God he flops.  It is gross to watch, I was under the St. Thomas side basket at the MIAC finals and in his first flop at the 3 point line was ?dispicable? (spelling not one of the virtues taught at UST).

That said, Al 'this is my house' McCoy was nasty.  In the words of Trent Tucker - Thata boy big fella.

Looks like UST will get one home game? thoughts?

I spoke with a couple Tommies after the game and stood next to some Tommie fans as the GAC/UST overflowed in the middle (Big Shocker made me watch his back since he thought one UST fan was trying to pickpocket him)...but I didn't see the Big 3. If I was near them, it was purely accidental and we didn't talk.
