seconds.   bj misses a bomb from half court at the buzzer and toms lose by 2.

Bummer city.  72-70 BV wins it.  But, you can't play behind all game and expect to get the W.

can't wait to hear from eye witnesses regarding the officiating.   announcers (not good) were pretty down on 'em.   not sure what was up with t. nikolai---am guessing his defense was an issue.   tommies shooting was poor, and they were outrebounded.   and they still could have won.
bj did step up to be the man; sounds like he needed a little more help.
the announcer's boy al mc coy laid a huge egg.

st. thomas did not lose because of the reffing.  they just lost.  they got killed on the boards.  i haven't checked the box score, so i'm not sure what the actual numbers would be.  even if they turn out to be quite close, ust simply didn't come up with the important ones.

scott was so cold for so long.  nicholai started out quite well with two early threes to push the tommies out in front. he then disappeared to the bench for so long that when he came back his rhythm was totally gone.

ust's 9-0 run in less than a minute was AMAZING. when they tighten the screws, there is just no room for error for the opposing team. very impressive.  Lonnie Robinson committed two VERY dumb fouls that both put BV on the line, and positioned them for double bonus later in the game when fouls became necessary.  I truly believe that a few fouls with about 3.5-6 minutes remaining by Robinson and others was the big difference in the game.  They all seemed to be correct calls.  The two robinson whistles were in wide-open court on overly aggressive pursuits. very silly.

Was at the game.  UST would have won if they could have had anyone hit an open jumper.  Scott was beyond broke.  he couldn;t hit the broad side of a barn.  It was not pretty, UST was killed on the boards.  The refs were medium, but let things slide for both teams.  Called a lot of ticky tack early, but both ways, and then let them bang late in the game.  UST's rally late in the game was impressive, BV was having a really hard time with the full court press, but UST just couldn;t hit a sot when they needed too, and thus they lost the game.

Flu.  He missed two practices and it was a game time decision for him to play.  He definitely got off to a nice start (6 points on 2 of 3 behind the arc), but physically he looked just miserable.  It was no surprise that his minutes were significantly limited (15 total, just 6 in the second half).

i was at the game (obviously).

Started off great - everybody hitting everything and the Toms got out to a big lead.  The crowd was going nuts.  It looked like UST was gonna run away with it early.

THEN came the ticky tack foul parade.  I'm not sure who wrote it, but whoever it was they were exactly right.  The MIAC is CLEARLY a much more physical league than many others and, as such, our teams play a bruising brand of basketball.

The Toms lost for 3 reasons last night.

#1 - Horrible shooting.  Especially because the BV defense was far from lock down.  UST missed open j after open j.

#2 - completely outrebounded.  Part of this, though, was because of #3.

#3 - Very, very, tightly called game.  I will not blame the refs.  I never have and never will.  The reffing style was just very silly.  It was as if they were scared someone was going to break a nail.  A seriously overofficiated game in my mind - both ways.  That said, both BV's ability to adapt to the officiating and the aggressive nature of UST meant that BV benefited more from this type of crew.  I am not saying they were bad.  All you can ever hope for is consistency.  These refs were consistent - but consistent in calling very weak fouls.

For example, the foul called on Lonnie late in the game was touch at best, 35 feet from the hoop, with 8 left on the shot clock.  Who makes that call? Answer: consistent refs who call touch fouls.

Still, a great effort by BV in a hostile environment and a good learning experience for the Tommies.  They should be pretty good in years to come.

Oh. And BJ played like a man on a mission from God.  Absolutely gutsy performance.
