Thanks, Sum.  I'm not sure I would want to be the guy to try to follow Irwin.  That's a tough act to follow, as he did a remarkable job recruiting and developing talent.  The boys in the Twin Cities think it's tough to recruit to the FM area; try recruiting city kids to Wahpeton liked Irwin did.   :o

...The Forum also reported former Cobber assistant coach John Whartnaby has applied for the vacant Wahpeton Science job along with 58 others.

Sum - I hadn't checked in on the Foolem for awhile, but I didn't realize there was a little scandal at NDSSS - coach gave a long distance calling card to a former player?  Ut oh.

And that surprises you at a JUCO institution?  Drake I should tell you stories from the days I was at Western Nebraska...back when future a future Gopher...Mr. Jackson was playing...

Between Irwin at Science and the elder Retzlaf at the Community College in Fergus there were some awfully talented recruiters and teams out here in the hinterlands!
I fly any cargo that you can pay to run
The bush league pilots, they just can't get the job done
You've got to fly down the canyon, don't never see the sun
There's no such thing as an easy run

VOJ - I'm certainly not condoning shady recruiting practices, but these Jr. Colleges exist for a reason.  How else can you explain how a kid from upstate NY, & an African–American kid from rural NC end up at the same place, at the same time out in the western prairies at Western Nebraska JUCO?  Athletic opportunity, & hopefully at some point it dawns on the kid – educational opportunities as well.  (I betcha you never thought you would be mentioned in the same sentence with NBA player Bobby Jackson did ya?  ;D) In fact was just reading in the sports section the other day how Dan O'Brien, former AD at the Hamline, & new Football Operations Director (title?) at the U started out his college career at Normandale JC before he transferred to UST.   Femi Solaja is another example of a student-athlete successfully transferred from a JUCO - Fergus Falls CC, & is getting his paper this spring, as have countless other JC - to 4-year student athletes.

And yes, I'm aware of the others that have fallen by the wayside. But as my eastern religion type friends say – "there are many paths that lead to Buddha – God."  Or in this case, paths that lead to education.  ;) Now I'm just glad there are many HS sectional basketball games to select from to replace the hole left in the week by the abrupt end of the MIAC season.  I'm out of here.  Have good weekend everyone!

I ventured up to Hamlie today for an open gym and to my surprise Nate Robertson is playing alongside HS teammate Chris Rupar.  Does Hamline have an in on the Robertson race?  I talked to Nate and he said he was transferring to somewhere in the conference.  The two top schools right now are Carleton and BU.  Maybe Hamline can be the Dark Horse, but after touring all three schools he will most likely realize the girls are hotter at Carleton..... :(

The HOFF with a left handed last second shot to win the game!!!!! :o

Go Gophs, Fist the Illini, then the Big Ten Crown.

Another Espy? It was described as the play of the year on Sportscenter. They announced it at the Alltel Center in Mankato (where I sat through nearly 100 minutes of scoreless hockey to see the Gophs lose) and the place went nuts for about two seconds.

The third time is the charm? I hope so. 19 straight losses to the Illni. I hear the game is on CBS - finally!

Prophet~
Sibley East does have that 6-6 post - they shut him down. It was a good game tho. How about Buffalo Lake-Hector? The big win over Cedar Mountain/Comfrey tonight at GAC. First time in a section championship. And here I was thinking we had no shot at sending a team to state from our region.

BLH is one away; G-SL is two away.

Drake...I was just there as the radio guy, by the way Bobby's second sophomore season the team should have won it all, they did go 36-4 without a starter over 6'7", it was a case of athletes making plays...no way I could have played there or at any college institution...however +K for the mention...oh and if you are wondering the alma mater is Edinboro University of Pa...who take on Millersville in the NCAA's at 11am our time today...ok back on point...you are right JUCO's are there for a reason and most kids go and "right themselves" and get on the path to building a future, others...well we have all heard the stories.

I know Johnnies Coach Jim Smith was an admirer of Sonny Gulsvig, they used to chat before every game we played up there...

I hate the Big Ten Network >:(

You can lump your local cable provider into that statement as well, takes two to tango...I have DISH and got it because I had enough of Charter, plus my wife is a Creighton grad and loves their hoops and I told her that by getting the DISH we would get more Creighton games and we did this year...probably doubled the amount we would normally see and watched them in our own home rather than venture out to an establishment with a dish to watch the game...

I also bought the Full Court package from ESPN...best 100.00 I have ever spent...if you guys are hoop junkies like I am, its incredible...last night I watched Big East/ACC/BIG 10/Big 12/SEC/WAC and PAC-10 games...just giving the remote a workout...it might be better than the first two days of the NCAA's

When have you seen the gophers get such a dramatic game-winning shot?  Before the season started I know I wasn't the only one thinking Hoffarber was a one-shot wonder, who maybe could shoot well but didn't have the athleticism to compete. thought he might be another Ryan Saunders.  I'm happy to be wrong.  Hoff is pure clutch.  amazing

I once called comcast to complain about not having the BigTen Network and before I got through with my first sentence the customer service rep started blasting the BTN for killing puppies and whatnot while praising Comcast for "putting fans first".  I did manage to inform her that if they were putting fans first, they would put the channel on the basic cable lineup and add a $1 to the monthly bill rather than unsuccessfully arguing with the BTN to put it on a $6 a month optional sports package with the Soccer Channels.

Gopher nation will rise nonetheless.

After watching the end of the Gophers game i think some board members may want to apologize to some MIAC refs. Someone made the comment that a certain ref was the worst he has seen.  Well, if you watched the Gophers get jobbed by the refs today, you have seen worse. ;D :D

Was Yurkovic on the game?  He works some in the Big 10 and definitely in the MIAC...

Hoops Junkie

What I heard at NDSCS is that they are looking at someone with JUCO experience and someone that has been a head coach.

I have heard at Concordia the leader is Chris Johnson currently an assistant at North Dakota, and a former player at Central College IA
