A story in the Fool-Em this morning on the Rich Glas hire. Mike McFeely has a column on the hire.

Watched a couple of different videos from the local TV stations on the news last night. If he is enthusiastic about the hire it certainly wasn't apparent from those clips.

No way Mayo is top 4 seed (OK, they might sneak in). Seeds will be posted by 11 this morning.

1. Tonka
2. Sibley
3. Burnsville
4. St. Cloud Tech
5. Mayo
6. Cooper
7. Kennedy
8. Cambridge

Sum – I liked the column by McFeely a lot & I think he definitely hit the nail on the nail on the head - "cushy sunset job."  I'd also add if this was a job in the twin cities, the age thing wouldn't be as much of an issue, but no matter how you slice it, he's coaching 220 miles away from one of his primary recruiting hotbeds – the twin cities.  The other recruiting hotbeds being the 400+ miles of the Dakotas, 800+ miles into Montana, & beating the boonies of northern Minnesota.   ??? ;D

I hope he's got a son in the coaching business who likes windshield time because I just don't see Glas doing it.  This is D3 and the Cobbs ain't got no aeroplane to fly prized recruits in, or the budget of some of the D3 schools that recruit nationally – Amherst, Williams, Washington, Wheaton etc.

Interesting quote from the Larry Papenfuss, the Cord AD in the Cobbs' press release –

"A coach of Rich's caliber comes along once in a lifetime," added Papenfuss. "He has shown me and the rest of the administration at Concordia that he is ready to continue the success the team had this past season and push the program onto the national scene. I am very excited about the future of the program."

Nice PR spin.  It would be nice for them to prove me wrong.

PI - do not sleep on Rodney Williams. Very, very dangerous player.  Thin supporting cast, but this kid is a legit D-1 talent.

CMob - for me, Kennedy beating Burnsville wasn't that big of a surprise, but Kennedy beating Eden Prairie was a huge shock.  Personally, I thought EP was one of the top 4-5 teams I saw all year.

DP, We have had numerous discussions in the past about the woes of CORD and recruiting. One of the keys that "we" figured would be to lock up this area of MN. Granted when he was at UND he was probably looking at a different athlete, but.....I wouldn't say he had a great reputation as a recruiter in thsi neck of the woods. Wonder what Local's take on Glas' reputation as a recruiter is?

I Understand that the Lakes country is a beautiful place to live. It sure seems to me like this is a stop gap measure. I can't see him building the program into a dyanasty in say 5 years and then riding off into the sunset.

it was more of a suprise to me that kennedy beat them 2 times...i was also suprised that kennedy beat EP since EP beat them by over 30 points both times they played this year (i think)

the meeting to seed the teams is today...so i will make my prediction before they name the top 4 and draw for matchups

1. Tonka
2. Sibley
3. Cooper
4. Mayo
5. Kennedy
6. St. Cloud Tech
7. Burnsville
8. Cambridge

WW,

I don't think Fritz is that swift on his feet to pull that off. That video was hilarious, but I heard that game almost got called off because of that clown.

If Waldvogel is headed to UST, that's a nice find for the Tommies. He was an electrifying RB/WR for STA, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him play football (don't let the midget status fool you). He's a nice basketball player, but I think his talents didn't come out enough with Fitzgerald and the big post that they had.

I have no problem giving Mayo a top-4 seed based on the one game I watched them play.

LC,

The MSHSL isn't seeding A and AA yet because it's an experiment they're trying out with the big schools first to see how it shapes out. On that note, why just seed the top-4? I know the goal is to get 1 and 2 in the state championship, but why not just seed all 8? I think the main argument there is that not all the teams that get to state play each other in the regular season, so that's hard to determine I guess.

According to one of the TC dailies, Como Park's Greg Morse & his future college decision is down to Winona state for basketball or UST to do both football (QB) & basketball.  If the ego scholie piece doesn't get in the way, Morse could have a nice dual sport thing going on with the Tommies.  I think he's a marginal D2 player, but could be an excellent D3 player.  If they can get past their first round games, both Como & STA should be on tv during the state tourney next week.

SUM- I think this is the 08, MIAC version of "Tubby Smith" comes to Moorhead.   ;)

Willy Wonka

From the MSHSL web site:

The Class AAAA pairings, with all four games at Target Center: Bloomington Kennedy (19-8) vs. No. 1 seed Minnetonka (25-3) at 10 a.m.; Cambridge-Isanti (19-10) vs. No. 4 seed St. Cloud Tech (27-2) at noon; Rochester Mayo (24-4) vs. No. 2 seed Henry Sibley, Mendota Heights (24-5) at 2 p.m.; and Burnsville (20-9) vs. No. 3 seed Robbinsdale Cooper (23-6).

Is this an Outstate bias? Mayo was ranked #4 in the last poll and two above them got beat...but they still can't get a top 4 seed? I think there's a decent chance they get pounded by Sibley — they don't play much defense — but I can't help feeling a little slighted. Hicks is the real deal, even if Kuipers isn't.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Willy - I can't directly answer your question but the only time I saw Mayo play, they got drilled by Tartan 72-57 back in December.  I realize I'm doing the faulty logic comparative score thinking, but Tartan was soundly defeated by Sibley in both regular season conference games.  And Tartan doesn't have the size Sibley does.  Still, Sibley-Mayo should be a good ball game.

I will admit it is disappointing to see two non-metro teams; St. Cloud Tech & Cambridge have to play each other in the first round.

Burnsville - Cooper could be a barnburner.

And I don't see how Kennedy can handle Tonka's size, but I would love to see an upset.   On paper this appears to be the most lopsided opening round game. Since I'm not a Cambridge guy, why didn't the Blue Jackets draw Tonka?  If they were seeding all 8 teams (which I know they didn't), I'm pretty sure Cambridge would be the 8th seed.

Some interesting dialogue on a Sioux Sports Blog near the end of the Rich Glas era in Grand Forks. Of particular interest are posts #17 & 32 with respect to his recruiting habits!

Tidbit of recruiting news from the northwest suburbs if anyone cares.

St. Michael-Albertville forward Theo Rothstein has committed to play at St. Cloud State University. He averages around a double-double a game (17.5 pts, 8.6 boards) and the Knights beat Monticello last night to head to the AAA state tournament. They get the shaft in seeding as they were ranked #2 all year behind BSM and get seeded #4 for next week. They play Patrick Henry in the opening round. My only vested interest in this team is that my girlfriend's cousin is the Knights' starting PG.
