Is it time for me to bring back out the stories of Wohler and his coaching staff at the bar?? I'm more than ready and willing to rehash this stuff, especially during a break from my 70-80 hour week when I'm already cranky!

He was my least favorite, slick, cocky coach who never proved anything and, from what I've heard, got run out of town by the Piper parents. I refuse to believe anything other than the truth as I see it :)

Drake - Dinny's old boss called and begged him back, offering a significant pay raise. He still owns a house up there (the housing market isn't exactly thriving in I'Falls, surprisingly), and it's an easier gig. A step down/sideways for his career, but everything else made sense to him. I advised against it, but it was obviously his call.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

No? Nothing? And here I was looking to end my busiest week of the year with something exciting  8)

Wonka, you are usually spot on with you news, but i doubt the piper parents had anything to do with his move back to HS.  Wohler fan, maybe the fact that when Dan Perrel left the coaching staff Wohler lost the team, oh and the fact Orono offered him a good chunk more than Hamline did in salary.

Gregory Sager

Guys, you're wasting your time waiting for a response from wohlerfan, and you're wasting your energy by responding to him. Think about it: This guy responded to a year-old post about a long-dead subject; he has never posted anywhere on this website before (and hasn't since); and he did not respond to a direct shot across his bow from Drake that came less than five hours after his one and only post. Our friend wohlerfan has all of the tell-tale signs of a hit-and-run poster, and I'll bet you anything that he will never post here again. He'll never even come back to lurk.

My guess is that he is a friend of Coach Wohler or his family who stumbled upon d3hoops.com while Googling the coach's name. He's long forgotten by now that he visited this site last week.

Well said Mr. Sager.

Well Wonka, I will add my two cents to your comments about Coach Wohler, only because I know the man and a handful of people who were close to him during the time in question at Hamline.  You can call me a homer if you like and you can choose not to believe what I will say if you like.  I have no problem with either.  Honestly, the board is slow and if nothing else this will keep up busy for a few days.  ;D

I have nothing to say regarding Coach Wohler and his staff at any bar, because I wasn't there.  However I'm sure if any of us did some digging we could come up with a few Hanson or Coach Koz stories of a similar nature.

As for why he left Hamline, again it had absolutely nothing to do with parents.  Prophet is right on when he lists the turnover in coaching staff of Dan Perrel and Jeremy Tiers; as well as the fact that he could spend more time with his family and receive a significant pay increase.  All played a role in his decision.

As for Coach Wohler never proving anything, I would look back at his first two years.  In 2004-05, he and his coaching staff were able to take a team that finished dead last (6-19 overall, 3-17 MIAC) and almost get them into the post-season, increasing their win totals to (10-15 overall, 8-12 MIAC).  Then in 2005-06 they again increase their win totals to (12-14 overall, 10-10 MIAC) and they manage to upset St. John's in the first round of the post-season.  Now I completely agree that his third and final year was a disappointment, but to say he never proved anything is false.

Nice try LC, but I think Willy is buried in fall sports preps previews & everyone else is trying to squeeze in one more fantastic summer weekend.  Last weekend was nearly a postcard perfect snapshot of Minnesota in the summer.  Temps in the low 80s, low humidity, nice, gentle breezes, & a wonderful scarcity of the state insect.  South Minneapolis and the lakes were great.  This weekend's weather forecast looks like its shaping up to be an encore performance.

And from one of the sporadic features of the board – Random Quote of the Day(RQD) comes this gem from the MIAC football board.  ;D

Veek, a Johnnie poster wa reprimanding another upstart Johnnie poster & replied with this instant classic ...In the meantime I would suggest that you pipe down, think before you speak, and remember that your place is still out in the backyard licking your tiny plums just hoping to one day make it onto the porch with the big dogs.

That line had me howling!  Talk about keyboard envy, great quip!  :o ;D :D

Here's the post in it's entirety which I think is a well written, humorous rebuttal.

Dust is right.  I've got it all under control.  Big things are lined up for later this week and beyond...

EDIT: BTW Veek aka Little Wiener Doggie---I am speechless.  You will have a lot of redemption to get back in the good graces of crew.  I trust you'll do everything in your power to reattain your status as "Expert" Griller at future tailgating events, but it will not be easy as missing the Season Opener for an Arts and Crafts Festival falls slightly above heading to the Little Falls Nail salon to get a manicure/pedicure on Game Day...

Buckwheat - first things first, allow me to set the record straight.  I am not missing the home opener in order that I can attend the LF Arts & Crafts Festival.  As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, I am the person in charge of my Lions Club's food booth that unfortunately happens to fall on that weekend.  As the chairperson for this fundraising activity I think it would be a little irresponsible of myself to not be there.

Now I wouldn't expect you to understand volunteering or stepping up to the plate and being a chairperson for an event such as this (you couldn't even muster up enough courage to speak with PC last year when he was in Collegeville) but I can't believe that somehow you managed to get Bennie and 57Johnnie to start dissing me, too!

Don't worry, though, as a mental tab is being kept of your unwarranted outbursts and sweet redemption will be mine soon.  In the meantime I would suggest that you pipe down, think before you speak, and remember that your place is still out in the backyard licking your tiny plums just hoping to one day make it onto the porch with the big dogs.

Have a fun and safe weekend everyone!

Given that tryouts aren't even until October, you're going to have to wait a while.

And you may want to invest in a bookshelf for the multi-volume set that is to be the Johnnie's roster. Rumor has it that it will make the minneapolis phone book look like a safe sex pamphlet. ;)

That is good humor Sum.  Nice line Snow, +K as well.  ;D Any other week Snow's post or the MIAC football poster's message would probably pull down honors as the Quote of the Week, but I came across this humorous, bittersweet, yet positive nugget in the news section of the paper over the weekend.

Unlike Hurricane Katrina in 2005, local, state, & federal government officials were quicker to react and respond this time around to the danger Hurricane Gustav represented.  Nearly 2 million people were evacuated from their homes in the New Orleans and surrounding gulf coast region of the states.  A NY Times reporter caught up with a number of evacuees located at a shelter area further inland in Louisiana:

...Still a woman on her cell phone could be heard explaining, as she waited, why she and her family had left the city (New Orleans).  She sounded a little impatient.  "Ain't nobody got time for all that drowning," she said.

Stay strong.

The air is getting crisper...must mean hoops season is drawing near.  I am starting to formulate some NEW ideas for pick'em.  Here's the latest, inspired by a work football pool.

This would be a reverse survival game.

Everyone starts in Pool A.  Each week you pick a team to loose.  Once a team has been picked, you cannot pick that team for another 5 games.  As long as you pick correctly, you stay alive.  Once you have an incorrect pick, then you are out of Pool A.   The last one standing is our overall winner.  If the entire remaining pool gets wiped on the same day, then we have a tie.

Falling out of Pool A is not the end of the road, now you get to participate in pool B.  The same rules apply as Pool A, except that you are never eliminated.  Also, winning Pool B is a little different. When Pool A expires, that will determine a Pool B winner.

In Pool B your total points are the total number of wins for each correct pick.

Example:

After 3 weeks:

snow: UST, CON, HAM
sumander: GAC, AUG, MAC
drake palmer: STO, SMU, SJU

In week 1, UST wins so snow is out of Pool A in week 1. In week 2, AUG wins and sum is eliminated from Pool A.  So Drake is our Pool A winner.

For week 3 we need to see who won Pool B.

Snow gets points for CON (1-2) and HAM (0-3) for a total of 1 point.
Sumander gets points for  GAC (2-1) and MAC(1-2) for a total of 3 points.

So Sumander wins Pool B.

Here's another possiblity
Snow gets points for CON (1-2) only for a total of 1 point.
Sumander gets points for  GAC (0-3) and MAC(0-3) for a total of 0 points.

So even though Sumander had more correct picks, neither team got a win.  So Snow ends up winning Pool B.

Any word on how the abundance of new players at SJU is panning out?  Also wondering how the transfer from River Falls (Nate Robertson?) is doing at Bethel?

Sign you are getting old

• The old athletic trainer at your school leaves to take another job, especially when you spent more time with him than your coaches and teammates. Happy trails, Paul Bruning!

Sign you are still young

• You get invited to play against the Harlem Ambassadors (think Globetrotters JV team) for a fundraiser event and are immediately called "the local ringer."

I'm supposed to try recruit people for the show, so I thought I might as well post the details here. My team includes Randy Breuer, former Speaker Steve Sviggum, Senator Steve Murphy and a few other local hoopers from the Red Wing glory days. Feel free to contact me with questions.

WHAT: Fundraising basketball event for Habitat for Humanity
WHEN: 2 p.m., Sunday Sept 21
WHERE: Red Wing High School
WHY: To see Wonka get his ankles broken, jersey pulled over his head and the ball bounced off his face, presumably while the Ambassador MC screams "OH BABY!" to the SRO crowd.

Sidenote: I haven't been able to find a roster, but I'm hoping I don't have to guard for former Hamline PG Jerome "The Truth" Williams. PiperInsider knows what I'm talking about, unfortunately.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Snow- I'm glad to see they're making you hone those UST critical thinking skillz out in the real world.  That's a serious pool you're mulling over.   ;D  I'm sure the usual suspects will be up for most anything.  Ahem, the usual suspects need to start poking their head in & around the board any week now.

Is it just me, but does anyone else think our site publisher might have a cruel or twisted sense of humor? Our board seems to be the only board featuring those silly ebay Willy Wonka DVD movie ads.  ;D

Speaking of Wonka - seems like you might have been roped into doing some nice charitable work with your basketball skills.  A little ibuprofen, old school elbow & knee pads & I think you might be a new/old golden Gustie.  ;)

I do have a cruel or twisted sense of humor. But the ads are a result of Google looking at the content on the pages and matching it to ads in its inventory. I can't take any credit.
