Gustavus just put on a clinic for how to blow a nice halftime lead.

Schmidt turnover
DLo turnover
Paulson foul
McPartland missed layup
Van Sickle missed jumper
TIMEOUT

Up 34-27 at the break to down 37-34 in a flash. Hey, at least everyone contributed, right? :-[

Gusties go on to lose a barnburner 69-68 on an Olson FT with 3 seconds left.  Olmscheid torches Gustavus for 30.  Something apparently happened to Fraase as he sat out the entire second half.

On Concordia's side the player that impressed me the most was Olmscheid. The box score doesn't bear out my recollection of the  game, but about the time the Tom's restored order to the game he picked up two quick fouls giving him 4 on the game. Glas sat him for a couple of minutes. When it did finally return it was too late. The Cobb guards of Olson, Hartmann and Molina will be good. On a combined basis they had 7 TO's to 4 assists. The rest of the team was 11-2. Not exactly what you want from your guards but the UST defense will do that to you.  A little more seasoning and I think this team will be a playoff contender in the next couple of years.

Nites, don't know what happened to Fraase, but I do know the cobbs post was in good hands with Olmscheid.

Johnnies beat Carleton at C-ville today and looks like the T's are going to win big. (Still not sure if they can run the table though.)

Fraase got sandwiched on a rebound and hit the floor hard.

As far as I could tell on semi-streaming video there was no defensive answer to Olmsheid--I believe he was the only cob with double figure scoring.

Thought Coach Hanson had the rotation figured out--but the Jeckel and Hyde nature of the individuals makes me wonder a bit.    Van Sickel had only 2 and Robbie Schmidt had 18.

I think the GAC's will be happy to be home with SMU on Monday

A couple of squeakers up in the north country.  Carlies lose to SJU 65-63 as they turn the ball over with a chance to tie in the closing seconds of the game. SJU's Chris Schwartz gets a steal & misses the shot, Cole Isetts follows with the offensive rebound & putback.  Or in the words of the SJU radio guy - "the senior comes up large & in charge."   ;)

GAC's Sam Paulson hits 2 critical FTS to tie the game against the Cobbs with 32 seconds left in game. Cobbs tries to run the clock down.  On a skip pass from Cobbs' Karl Olson to the weakside, the normally reliable defender Mike DeLo fouls Olson on the pass.  Olson makes 1 of 2 Fts to put the Cobbs up 69-68. After a few attempts at entering the ball with 3 seconds left, the Gusties throw the ball away.  Cobbs get the steal & steal the minor upset, 69-68.  Cobbs' John Fraase was injured at the end of the first half & never played the 2nd half.

13 players score for UST in their win over & Big Al was trying to do his best Bill Walton impersonation as he was 7-7 in the first half for 14 crumbs.  Good upps Al!

I recall your post about Olmscheid.  I was about to post the Johnnie win.  They swept Carleton this year.  Any details on the game?

I can't check SMU-Bethel.  Their high tech website of the game shows Bethel playing SMU with St. Olaf players.

Although Paulson hit the two big free throws, it appeared that he and Bobby Johnson had a few critical fouls and turnovers coming down the stretch. Good win for the Cobbers.

I got a fever! And the only prescription is more mac.......Pipes end the streak with an 84-56 win
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin' back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" .....Jesus Shuttlesworth

Someone must have read the Piper Manifesto to them during pre-game.   :)

Watching from afar again this year. The HoopsPhd post was very well written and certainly made some points. Not sure how long it took to come up with those thoughts but it seems like they've been on the way for a while now. By the way, it's not Witmore, it's Whitmore.

That post came on the heels of the Augsburg loss, which is when all these people come out of nowhere to rip the Pipers and Coach Whitmore. Yet, when they gave St. Thomas the closest game of anyone in the MIAC, there was not a single post about the matchup. Last time I checked these "so called supporters" do nothing but complain when they lose but won't give any support when they win.

It's no wonder Hamline hasn't won in a long time, they have no real support from fans and alums. Hopefully, posts like The Hoops Doc will give Whitmore and his players some extra motivation as the season progresses and into the offseason.

Untrue. This "so-called supporter" loved up the Pipers three years ago at about this time. Heck, I even drove from Olivia to Collegeville and then Olivia to Summit and Cretin that year. That was a fun time. I also really enjoyed my final year of college, in which Josh Hanson's 25-foot threes made it rain and Jerome Williams' buzzer-beater at Bethel gave the Pipers life for a playoff spot down the stretch.

I used to go watch more Piper games when I lived in the cities, but now, living in Hutch, it gets really tough. It used to be a nice feeling that the program was getting better, but the past couple of years the team has not taken another step. I thought Whitmore might be that guy, but it has yet to be seen.

Hamline has three MIAC wins - two vs a bad MAC team and a win early against St. Olaf. Beat an actual top 4-5 team (not just a moral "we were close" victory) and I'll give Hamline praise.

slickyquick

PI, completely understand your thinking but at the same time, Whitmore has one class of his own recruits on campus right now. None of the veterans have ever won at Hamline and from the looks at other MIAC rosters, they never won in HS either. It will probably take some time, things are just going to turn around especially when you look at the MIAC website and see that St. Thomas, St. John's, and Gustavus have won a majority of the conference titles over the last couple of decades.

Question of the day.....Jim Smith is sitting with 693 wins, SJU has 8 games left....Will he get to 700 this year? Here is there remaining schedule: @SMU,MAC,@STO,CORD, AUG,@HAM,@UST & GAC. Seems like an awfully tall order.4-4 might be a stretch.

Man LC, I saw you posted your pickems selection on the Pickems board.  No response to the Hamline Piper Manifesto?  Or have you decided to turn your sickle of hoops revolution into a plowshare of peace?  ;)

Sum - Carnak sez:  It's going to be tough sledding for Johnnies' Coach Smith to break that 700 win barrier this season.   If I was the Johnnies sports department I'd just begin my preparation for this event next summer & plan for the 700 win milestone around the end of November, first part of December.

On another note.  You might want to find another bikini clad beauty to grace your avatar selection.  Based on the color of her suit you might give people the impression you've joined the ranks of the Tommies.  :o ;)
