TearDrop-- I doubt she does...but 1000 for one coach is mindboggling.

Does Pat Summit have more wins (1,000) than my redbirds do in their entire history??  ???

I don't have time to look it up and I am not sure that I want anyone on the board to do so either...  :-\

Before anyone says anything, no I do not have anything better to do. That aside, it looks as though the redbirds have 721 wins that are accounted for not counting this season. However, there are 14 incomplete seasons. The total would have to be around 1,000 I would assume. Summit does have more wins then any other women's program in the nation.

On a side note- I'm not sure how closely any of you follow D2, but SMSU has quietly taken the top spot in the central region. They are tied for first in the NSIC with WSU. Some of the credit has to be given to former Piper Jon Derock. I believe he is 2nd on the team in scoring and is doing this by coming off the bench. I have also heard he has turned into quite the ballhawk on the defensive end. I would have to say I never thought Derock and good defense would be uttered in the same sentence. Props to him.

Carleton student Myles Radtke and I collaborated for a preview of the UST/Carleton game this weekend. Interesting to note that Radtke picked against his Knights. Take a gander here.

There's also a busy day of links at the bottom — 5 relevant stories, actually — so get your one stop shopping, per usual. As you'll see, one involves a rant of mine. The UST basketball program has now had three stories in the metros in the last 40 days. They are #1 and undefeated, so I don't have big problem with it, but I'd like to see the love spread around a little bit. That said, they've obviously got the most clout right now and will draw the casual reader.

But doesn't Augsburg/Hamline/Bethel/Mac/GAC/Olaf/Carleton/Concordia/SMU have a single human interest story that would be worth pursuing? I should almost see if Crevier needs a freelance feature guy :)

Now for my big beef...PLEASE start spelling names right, people! As my blog says, Jon Bain's name was misspelled by Reusse two years ago and now Brett Tuma is referred to as "Tom" in the latest story. Really?

I've got 100 bucks that says Tuma's dad has an email in to Dennis Brackin by 8 a.m. :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Willy, I read the article that Myles wrote in December about the "raw deal" Johnson got. (Nice interview with Myles by the way.) It is funny to me because the ref that made it personal is the same ref that told Carleton players in that game, "If I see someone on the ground, I call a foul whether I see it happen or not." Referring to an incident in the game when Jonkers was called for a blocking foul when he was on the ground because he slipped on the floor, no where near the other player. Come on, when I heard this I couldn't believe a ref would admit to that. At least stick to your guns and made it seem like you know what you are doing out there. Yes, Johnson maybe a flopper at times, but I think this year he has actually gotten better with that, but either way, call the game the way you see it, not how you feel or how you think it is going to happen. It's not fair to anyone.

basketballlover

As for the game, for Carleton you know Rosett and Johnson will be ready to play. It will be up to the other starters and Jonkers off the bench to make it a good close game. With St. Thomas having a large bench and everyone able to play that come off it, I have to say St. Thomas gets the win. Unless Johnson plays his best game ever, like he did last time against them, and gets a great (not just good) outing from Rosett and the others. Carleton's 6 guys can't outlast a solid bench of 10.

What are the predictions for the play-off spots? From where it stands now, anyone can go from #2 to #6 or the other way around.

BBLover, way too early to start making those type of predictions. With most teams having 4 games left alot can happen between now and the end of the regualr season. Ask the same question in a week and things will be a lot more clear.

Nice interview on your blog Willy concerning Carleton/UST. Keep up the good work! I think you are safe on your estimate that Touma's dad would have his e-mail in to Dennis Brackin by 8:00AM. I think 7:30 is a better estimate, but you are safe with the before 8:00 prediction :)
I know he checks out this board on occasion, so hopefully he will get a chuckle out of your comment ;)

I can't see Zach Johnson being able to top his performance from the first game, where he made everything in sight, so my guess is the outcome at Northfield will be similar to the game at STU. My experience is that for various reasons,  Carleton historically seems to have  minimal "homecourt advantage" for games played in Northfield, which is another reason I think the outcome will be similar to the results from the last game in St. Paul. I'm not saying they don't play well in Northfield, I just don't think they play better at home than on the road.

Wonka,
Love your Blog and your comments on the DIII board.  I did send you an email but thought the DIII board should see that I have changed my ways>
Brett,

I love your blog on the MIAC and your Willy Wonka comments on the DIII board.  I asked Brett on the Tom Tuma reference and he said-' I like the alliteration.  Why didn't you think of that when you guys named me?

I guess Brett has the right attitude!

Keep up the good work!!

Nice Carleton preview Willy.

I noticed Willy's guest contributor Myles Radtke was singing the praises of Carlies freshman wing, Kellan McLemore. I'd like to humbly point out that I was the first poster to id the talent of this player last October.

In addition, he was also a member of the prestigious MIAC Drake Palmer FY All-Name Team.  In recognition of this distinct achievement, he and the rest of the honorees will receive a dinner certificate for two to the prestigious Happy Chef restaurant in Mankato. Are they still open for business anymore?   ::) ;D Or, if not Happy Chef, the historical landmark in St.Paul - Mickey's Diner.

As long as you don't send them here:

or here:

I will be happy.

Also ate here recently and it was great:

WW, Kudos as well from me on the Carlie preview. Should be interesting.

Sum - you trying to tell me you don't like the Nook or the Groveland Tap? (I couldn't make out the image of the 3rd spot)

Ehh,wassa matta you - you lose your tastebuds???  ;D

Speaking of good ol' greasy spoons, what are some of the hi-lo spots around the state? Back in the day the upscale 24 hour spot was the Village Inn with their delicious huevos rancheros and green chili verde sauce, (especially at 2:00AM) or your typical run of the mill Country Kitchen.  When we wanted to live a little more dangerously-- out on the edge,  we'd head out to the nearest divey truck stop to impress our dates that we were not your typical college boys- we were hard & tough men, men of the world.   Divey truck stops yes, tough men – no. ::) ::) :D

No I love the Nook and the Tap. You send them there and it gets more crowded and I can't get in! ;D

Third pic is Shamrock's. #1 daughter took me there earlier last month.

Drake - Please explain to me why the Knights recruiting class is so good ???
I will agree that Blaise Davis is a nice player who could make an early impact.  He's intelligent and shoots it well.  The other key addition, IMHO, would be Mr. Grinnell, who is a workhorse, but an undersized (6-4) post player without much range.

The other local players were average Minnesota H.S. players and we know very little about the young men from Washington and Colorado.  Just trying to figure out your logic on this one....

In part, my post was an attempted humorous response to your post in which you opined that the Oles might arguably have one of the top two recruiting classes in the MIAC this season.  While I certainly think the Oles have a nice group of recruits this year, until all of the school rosters are released I question whether it's a top 2 recruiting class.

As far as my selection of the Carleton FY class as a top recruiting class goes, it was based on several illogical ideas, or hunches.   ::) ;) One – the Carlies have two likely candidates for the prestigious Palmer All-MIAC All FY Name Team: Kellan McLemore from Colorado & Patrick Philley from Washington.  Secondly, some of you may recall I did a little internet legwork last year & I projected that Chris Schwartz at SJU, & the dearly departed Trey Mullen at Macalester could be impact FY.  At the end of the season Schwartz made the All-FY team, & I 'm convinced if Mullen would have stuck around all year, the Scots would have had a much better season, & Mullen would have been a likely nominee for the MIAC All Freshman team.

Well, I did some additional sleuthing on Colorado native, Kellan McLemore at Carleton & he could fit into that role of non–native Minnesota impact freshman player such as Chris Schwartz & St. Mary's Will Wright.  McLemore played in a very competitive "big school" league in Colorado and according to a friend in Colorado, that metro area of Denver is a hotbed for talented basketball players.  Just a hunch.  Plus, it seems Guy Kalland can get more out of his players than his cross-town rival- Coach K. at St. Olaf.  Every year warts, blemishes, short bench & all, the Knights end up in the league playoffs and makes some noise....

Nope, just offering up proof, for those doubting Thomas types.   ;)

Shamrock's - oh yeah, that's the sister restaurant owned by the guys who own the Nook.  I've not been there yet.

I tell you what though. If you want a cholesterol rush & cheesy grinder like no other, check out Fat Lorenzos' in South Minneapolis about 56th & Cedar.  I used to drive by there& wonder why the place stayed open all of these years – It's a calorie laden feeding trough - & the food is serious. Health wise I can only afford to go there once a quarter or so. Fat Lorenzo's

Little bit further north of UST in Roseville approximately one block north on Lexington past the Lexington & Larpenteur intersection is Mavericks.  They make roast beef sandwiches the way they're supposed to be made before Arbys' got their hands on them.

Photos don't look the best, but the food is great if you like roast beef sandwiches...
