Bethel has never gone in to its posts. This has been a fact since I started "following" the league in 2000...and they've had some monsters inside.

Why are people shocked by this? Do you really expect it change in the biggest game they've played in this decade?
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Don't plan on getting a ticket at the door tomorrow night: http://www.tommiesports.com/mbb/news/Update_2-27.html

Game sold out...

Didn't get a ticket?

WW is right. I've always been mystified by Bethel's tendency to not give its posts the ball when they have position on the block. Even with very capable scorers, the guards at times never even acknowledge the fact that they have a legitimate post threat who can score on the floor. Instead, they jack up shots and try to grab rebounds.

As fun as the blowouts have been, I'd like to see a close game tomorrow night. It should be after the OT game last time between the two at Schoenecker. Tommies win by 7-10, and I wish I could be there to see it with my own eyes. My gal bought me a ticket to the food and wine show in MPLS and the title game won't be on our schedule. I also wouldn't mind seeing Bethel win to get two teams in the tourney, who knows.

It wasn't an OT win, we won by 3 in regulation

An interesting read from the CCIW board & respected D3Hoops poster:

I looked at this quickly, but it seems like 11 of the 18 Pool C's are accounted for already...

(in no particular order)

1. UW-Whitewater (lost tonight to Platteville)
2. UW Stevens Point or UW-Platteville (WIAC)
3. Buena Vista
4. St. Mary's (Md.)
5. Capital or John Carroll (OAC)
6. Randolph-Macon or Guilford (ODAC)
7. Trinity (Tx) or Centre (SCAC)
8. Salem St or Bridgewater St (MASCAC)
9. Middlebury or Amherst (NESCAC)
10. Farmingdale St. or St. Joseph's (Sky)
11. Mass-Dartmouth or Rhode Island (LEC)

I think Elmhurst, as a Pool C candidate, would check in right behind these teams.  In other words, there would have to be 7 more upsets of completely "upset proof" teams (like Buena Vista and St. Mary's were) to put Elmhurst out of the Pool C picture.

Outside of those listed above, I believe these are the top "upset proof" teams - the current league leaders who would get in even if upset in their conference tournament.  If you are in the market for a Pool C bid and are scoreboard watching this weekend, you want these teams to win their tournaments...

Ithaca (E8)
St. Thomas (MIAC)
Puget Sound (NWC)
Worcester Poly (NEWMAC)
Wheaton (CCIW)
Hamilton (Liberty)
Richard Stockton (NJAC)
Transylvania (HCAC)
Franklin & Marshall (CC)
Calvin (MIAA)
Texas-Dallas (ASC)
Wooster (NCAC)

I still say Elmhurst would be safely in if they lose in the CCIW tournament.  Tonight hurt Augustana, which seemed to be sitting at about spot #16 or #17 at best.  I honestly think Augie has to win the tournament.

I could be wrong.  Just my take.

I often hear a lot of whining about MIAC refs, but my experience is they very rarely impact the outcome of MIAC games (other than the infamous Asian Sensation).

Finally had enough of this crap about officials! Having worn the stripes for a considerable length of time I feel I can speak safely for (most) officials. No one goes into a constest with the attitude they are going to screw one team or the other!! If I was ever in a situation, which I have been, where my home town was involved I would bend over backwards to make sure I was impartial. Often to the point of being more harsh on my home town!

Every time you put the stripes on you are asked to make any number of judgement calls. These situations arise way too rapidly for you to ponder....gee which call is more beneficial to the school I have a particular allegiance with. You make a split second decision right or wrong an move on...

I have absolutely no problem with an official working a game that he has an offspring attending. You are talking about honest, professional people who are trying to their best.

You are standing on a very slippery slope when you start impunging the integrity of an official. Be very careful.
As you said, you can't speak for anyone but yourself, and actions tend to speak a little louder than a proclamation of innocence.  It's not scandalous that Yorky might favor the Tommies, it's human nature to favor teams you have ties to, conciously or subconciously.   Easy solution, don't ref those games in which you have obvious ties to one team.  Basketball isn't golf.

Just to change the tenor (sp?) slightly...Is there a tougher sport to ref than basketball? Really, what is a travel (or charge)? It's like pornography...I know it when I see it but I can't describe it.

Wabbit, thanks for making laugh...thats is priceless and dead-on accurate  +k

and MLB ump Tim Tschida (CDHS, UST) gets his share of Twins games and no one calls foul

Does he have two sons involved with the Twins organization?
No he doesn't, but neither of Yorky's kids are involved with the UST organization either.
If anything, he might begrudge UST if he's just written tuition check earlier in the day of a game :)

sorry for the three-peat, but thought Id share some interesting data---

UST and Bethel have met six times in MAC Playoffs and UST holds a 4-2 edge, winning the last 4 meetings. The last five meetings have been at UST.

UST's average margin in its 4 wins= 6.25 (so much for the blowout)

They met once before in the title game (2002) with UST winning 73-61, the most lopsided margin of their playoff meetings.

UST VS BU in MIAC Playoffs:
1986- semifinal at Bethel—Bethel 60-54
1991- semifinal at UST—Bethel 74-71, OT
1992- semifinal at UST—UST 65-62
2000- semifinal at UST—UST 79-70
2002- championship game at UST—UST 73-61
2008 semifinal at UST—UST 69-68

I'de be willing to bet that UST was never ranked 1st in the nation in any of these?  There could still very well be a blowout.

UST women lose in Moorehead tonight.  The game is officially a 7:30 tip for tomorrow night.  Hope its a good one.

More Bethel Breakdown & misc.

I'll let Mose go further back in the time machine, but here are some more interesting stats I uncovered. Just think, I could possibly be getting paid for this if I was one of Gene McGivern's work studies at UST.   ;)

To my mild surprise, Mike Moberg has had some big games against UST in the past, but I'll let others draw their own conclusions.

In 21 conference games (20 regular season & 1 post season game) during the 08-09 season Bethel is 15-6.

15 WINS
Bethel:  74.1 avg. ppg          Opponents: 61.7 avg ppg  Scoring margin:  +12.5 ppg

6 Losses
Bethel: 68.8 avg ppg                 Opponents: 77 avg ppg  Scoring margin:  -8.2 ppg

Mike Moberg in 15 wins:              14.5 ppg & 10.2 rpg
Mike Moberg in 6 losses:              6.8ppg & 8.7 rpg

Bethel in the last couple of years against UST

2-11-09 Bethel @ UST: Bet Loss 75-72 / Moberg 9 pts/ 10 rebs
1-7-09 UST @ Bethel:  BET loss 73-63 / Moberg 6pts/ 9 rebs

2-28-08 Bethel @ UST: BET Loss 69-68 / Moberg 16 pts/ 6 rebs
2-6-08 UST @ Bethel: BET Loss 68-84 / Moberg 18 pts/ 5 rebs
1-7-08 Bethel @ UST: BET Loss 83-77 / Moberg 7 pts/ 6 rebs

2-3-07 Bethel @ UST: BET Loss 89-67 / Moberg 16 pts/10 rebs
1-6-07 UST @ Bethel: BET Loss OT 91-86 / Moberg 18 pts/ 10 rebs

Anyone check out Mac's search for a head coach?

How typical is it to require coaching experience at the college level for a MIAC school? The Gusties recently hired a high school football coach after a national search, for example. Are you really telling me Ken Novak's resume would get tossed in the garbage if he applied? Feel free to make the obligatory Hopkins University joke here  :P

A few thoughts to add:
New AD in Kim Chandler. She hired Chris Brann, our old football coach, so just based on that it seems she likes coaches with previous head-coaching experience.

She could be looking at the hire made by Hamline and thinking "Why can't we do that?"

In this down economy, you'd think they'd get a ton of applications, so being up front about wanting college coaching experience could help discourage those without that type of experience. Of course, hiring a coach with assistant-only experience in women's basketball seems to be working out pretty well...

Have fun at the game (if you have a ticket).

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required; Master's degree preferred

Does it really take a Master's degree to coach? Experience coaching (assistant or head) and playing (knowledge/awareness builder) would be my preferred things.
