Just landed a gig at the Post Bulletin, the hometown paper. Upgraded from a 6k circulation bi-weekly to a 45k daily. I'm one step closer to taking over the world.
Congrats

I dont know if this has been talked about yet, but Ray Brown (Richfield/Bradley committ) is playing at Hamline this year.
Wow, Ray Brown could be a heck of a pickup for the Pipes.  A little research on Mr. Brown reveals that he played for Bradley his freshman year back in 05-06, failed a drug test before march madness and didn't play again.

Congrats Willie! Sounds like a nice move for you. What's your assignment?

He averaged like 7 minutes a game for a team that went to to the sweet 16, and apparently on the Bradley forums was going to be their starting shooting guard the following year if he didn't go through his ordeal.  He obvioulsy failed the drug test and immediately had one year taken away.  He then transferred to Western Missouri (d2) where he played for a semester and averaged 10ppg but got homesick and came back to MN.  At one time he was ranked the 60th best player in the nation on rivals and if you look at his scout page he had a lot of major d1 offers.  The kid can play and dont be suprised if he was poy in the MIAC.  He is a 6'6" shooting guard with athleticism and a nice stroke.

How many years of eligiblity does he have left?  I would guess just the one as he used his 3rd up at Western Missouri.  With Hipp and Brown alone, Hamline is going to be a tough team to beat.

If we wait long enough, some nice tidbits of info end up on the board.   ;)

Klop – Eric Clute is a nice D3 player, with ok handles & is more of a streak scorer than a strong shooter such as the former sweet shooting lefty for SMSU – Matt Fletcher.  Clute's defense & quicks could be a liability, especially at D2.   Time will tell & I wish him the best.

Sum - I've not seen this Chad Calcaterra play, but I'm assuming he must be a decent D1 mid-major type of prospect.  Former NDSU coach Tim Miles seems to be developing a pipeline at Colorado State to MN for hoops talent.  Travis Busch from the Gophers was going to transfer to CSU this spring & I believe a big post from Hopkins, Dan Vandevierven (sp) was/is at CSU.

Good move Willy. +k So will this mean no more reports from Gus Young & other MIAC courts this winter?

Ray Brown had/has all the physical talent in the world.  Unfortunately, what was going on between his ears, & smooth talking sycophants who were re-living their athletic careers through this kid, helped ruin what was a once promising athletic career.  Hopefully he's learned a few lessons from the University of Life the last few years.  By the way, it will take a whole a lot more than Ray Brown & Carl Hipp for Hamline to make a playoff run this season.

+k to the usual suspects.

By the way - why's a UMAC poster breaking the Ray Brown story in his first post & the interest in Ray Brown?  ???  ;)

Hard to say right now. I'll be working significantly less hours, but I no longer decide my own schedule. My new boss could decide I need to work Mondays, Wednesday and Saturdays...or he could leave all three open.

If I had to guess, I think I'll be free every Wednesday and most Saturdays...but Mondays will be busy. Or maybe I can work it into my new job description? It'd be a stretch, I think  :-\
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Huge pick up for the pipes in Brown.  Good to see Nelly could put another athletic wing with Hipp.  With Brown and Hipp i think the pipes have a good chance at making the playoffs.  Hipp is the best center in the league, and if brown can make up for what they are losing in thrasher, they just need on more player to step up on offense and i think they will do well. As for "losing" Clute, It might do him some good to get a fresh start with a new team, but D2 is a big commitment step up from D3.  Best of Luck to him and now Nelly has a spot to plug in another young talent.

I played in the UMAC two years ago and work out with Ray a lot.  He was going to try and get a year back and transfer to the U of M since he knows a lot of players there (ie. Busch, Mbakwe, Nolen, etc) or go overseas but instead is now enrolled at Hamline.  AO, I think he is trying to get another year back also but as of now he only has one.  Drake, you hit on the head, he had a lot of people pumping his head up about being the next NBA player out of MN...unfortunately it never happened, however this kid willl be a major force in the MIAC.  Somebody said "if he can do what Thrasher did", he is 3 times the player Thrasher was (I am from WI, played against him numerous times).

ChairmanYao

I have to agree with lost prophet on clute. He is redshirting this year at SMSU. This means he will have to work his tail off in practice with no playing time. I hope he makes it the season, but I don't really see it happening. I don't think steamen will put up with the stuff he got away with at the D3 level. Ray is a great pickup for the Pipes. They have some other extremely athletic freshman coming in. I think these players will fit better into Whitmore's system than players in the past. Let's hope they have some skills to go along with the athleticism.

As for Ray being 3 times the player of Thrasher. In talent that is possible. However, Thrasher was the leader of that team. When things got rough he would be the one to try to get everybody fired up. Who will do that now? Ray? I doubt it. What that team needs is a leader. I'm hoping some kind of combination of Carroll, Andersen, and Weinrich can fill the roll.

Drake.....Dan Vanervieren is now enrolled at Concordia-St. Paul and just today was declared eligible to play this season. (NCAA ruling)

If Ray Brown has his head on straight, he can be a star in the MIAC.

I remember a few years ago watching him at the state tournament. He took over a game that Richfield won. He is lightning quick and is very athletic, but if I remember correctly, needed some work on his jumper. But that's a really nice pick-up for Hamline. I wouldn't have minded seeing him play for Tubby, but that would require a year off and some time to develop under the system.

Has he played any ball this summer? Anyone seen how he looks?

Drake where was our piper insider with the scoop?  That is the guy who should have broken the news...

New transfer rule regarding redshirt recognition in the MIAC will help the J's and the MIAC overall, all the guys who were redshirted at D2's and above and who have transferred in get that year back...I think that means that UST can get another year from Rosefelt on the diversity scholly   :D :P

Drake Palmer

Voj- I think PI is still stuck out in the Hutchinson hinterland & his contacts at Hamline might be drying up.

I did a little checking around & apparently Ray Brown is occasionally getting in a run with some hoopers at a local St. Paul YMCA.  Eric Webb from Grand Rapids who went on to play at Furman (?) has also made an appearance or two, along with a smattering of D2, D3 & NAIA type college players.  I guess Mr. Brown is taking a laid back approach in the pick up games, but his J still appears to be a bit flat (shaky).

In other news, here's a very important Public Service Announcement for any new college parent/posters out there who may want to keep tabs on their children this school year.  ;D
