I think it should be a rule that when you enter college, you drop the "ny," "my," "by," from your first name. I know Conboy has...

oAs

Or... unless you live in the south.  Sorry to be a little slow on the uptake, but what would "ny" be?  As in Tony"?  Do you drop the "ny" to become "Tone"?  :)

Young Conboy is a Tom Conboy "jr." "II", "III" etc. which is one reason why he went by Tommy in the past.  In high school he was referred to as Tommy Conboy, & which was how I was introduced to him.  But if he's grown into a "Tom", I'll make note of that for future references.  Looks like on the Carleton website Drake is still listed as a "...my".

One other note – Rosemount seems to be the school of choice for Carleton & Mac to recruit a number of their student-athletes - Baquero, Forkrud, Kootsikas, Stein & now Assel.   I think they might be giving Mounds View a run for the money by producing the largest number of players in the MIAC in recent years.

Outstate schools that seem to produce more than their fair share of athletes would be Eden Valley Watkins, Willmar &  Rocori. Fertile hunting grounds for UST, SJU & CORD.

Drake-
I think alot of the outstate recruits in the Northern part of the state( St.Cloud and North) dont get seen by recruiters. Unless you are an amazing athlete and go to UND, UMD or UM at Crookston. Several people at my school were good athletes but nobody saw them because i didnt go to a huge school in the cities. Concordia is kinda in my neighborhood and i remember their football recruiting style. They would go to a school and ask if anybody wanted to play college football and if they had any takers they would invite them to campus. It is an effective way to recruit but they don't have a clue whats out there.  Outstate talent doesnt get the exposure that the metro area players get. I think everyone would agree with that.I dont really know what my point is here but thats how i feel.

"ny" would be Johnny as in Johnny Tauer. "ly" might be another good one to drop like Billy.

Duh, guess Drake is running on slow today.  I saw "ny" & got locked in on Tony for some reason & couldn't think of any other names.  I can't even blame my non-Mac education for that.   ::) :P

SUMMIT!!!!!

Drake
Thanks for the (probably unknowing) plug for my hometown & the surrounding area...don't forget Litchfield, Kimball & New London-Spicer when you talk about that fertile hoops pocket!! I hear Carleton is looking at at least 2 kids out that ways, and I'm sure HU has its eyes on those same 2 plus 2 others I'd call legit D3 talent.

It seems too many MIAC coaches refuse to look beyond the metro area (GAC, Cord, SMU & SJU being obvious exceptions), which is a pity as there are extremely talented players who live "out in the sticks." (I mean, Braham is 65-75 miles north of the metro, and I think there's a talented player or 2 up there  :) )

Agreed about the "kiddie" suffixes on names, but it is also a matter of personal preference. In the case or Tauer, I'd say he generally goes by John, but is comfortable with Johnny out of deference to his father.

i think zach johnson is fitting in well down at CAR...i heard it took a little bit of work at the very beggining in the summer league and first couple games but i think that involved knowing when it is time to take the ball to the hoop or put the shot up and knowing when the offence needs to be run through...but it is sometimes hard for players that were the go to person or one of them in high school to understand that they cant always step in right away and have the same role they did in high school....word on the street all is good now and it shows in his numbers that the scoring will happen if he lets the offense come to him which could also be a reason why drake hasnt put up as many big scoring nights as i thought he would so far...CAR is on a roll going into their rivalry game on saturday against Olaf

Regarding the issue of out-state recruiting by MIAC programs, let's keep in mind that part of it has to do with players from those "northern area" high schools going to play in the UMAC, WIAC, and the NAIA schools in North Dakota.  We all know that the WIAC and NAIA schools are generally much cheaper, and money still plays a big role in the decision to attend a small college and participate in athletics.  Plus, there still seems to be a bias that the competition in small towns and a player's success there doesn't mean as much as someone doing half as good at a big metro area high school.  I'm not really sure why that is?  ???

Anyone ready to take a stab at Wednesday's games?

Check out our "stabs" on the pick'em board.

I don't follow high school hoops very closely in MN but with all these kids coming out of Rosemount, has Rosemount done anything in MN high basketball lately?  Or are these good individuals on a average team?

OAS- Rosemount is 1-9 this year in BBall. In 2004-2005 they were 11-15 overal. Not the greatest records over two years.

Rosemount has the misfortune of playing in the Lake Conference which is arguably the strongest, large school conference in the state.  This conference includes 2005 state runners up – Eastview, along with 2004 state champs & finalists, Chaska & Burnsville.

IMO, Eastview's team from the 05 season had one of those misguided & misplaced 6-10 post players, Darren Kent who was a late bloomer & at the last minute received a scholarship to Kansas State.  That Eastview team also included the MIAC's own Zach Johnson, who we know is playing at Carleton.

In 04 Chaska had Spencer Tollackson who plays for the Gophers, & Burnsville had Ryan Amoroso who plays for Marquette.  Chaska also sent a kid to play at D2 – UM-Moorhead.  In addition, Chaska & Burnsville sent three kids over to UW-Stout & one of them, Adam Chandler, has been a 2-year starter thus far for the Stout Blue Devils.

The last time Rosemount had a real strong team was their team of 03 when they had Mike Kootsikas & Kyle Marxhausen who is a high flyer over at D2 Concordia –St. Paul.  He originally started out at UM-Mankato but transferred to Cord-St.P his sophomore year?  Marxhausen would have been a great addition to the MIAC!  Now we're talking about a kid who can beat you off the bounce & drain the trey.  I loved that kid's game!

In the 03 season the Lake conference had 2 really strong teams in Bloomington Jefferson (St. Johns' Ohme & Amherst's Dan Wheeler) & Eden Prairie (UMD's Jared Nunness & Carleton's Tommy Drake); & then the Rosemount team, with Kootsikas & Marxhausen.  At various times during the regular season, all 3 teams were ranked in the top ten of various high school polls.

IMO, the 2003 year was probably the pinnacle of modern day MN high school basketball. Any time you turned around you could go to a game & see a great high school player - Hopkins – Dan Coleman, Kris Humphries; Mpls North – Kammron Taylor, Kevin Henderson, James Davis; Mpls Henry – Lawrence McKenzie; St Thomas Academy – Isaac Rosefelt, etc.

This reminds me, Willy, I guess I did see Forkrud play one other time in high school.  He was a senior on the Rosemount team when Marxhausen & Kootsikas were juniors.  I saw Rosemount play once in the 01-02 season & a couple of times during the 02-03 season.  But to be honest, I was watching the high flying work of Marxhausen & not paying too close attention to Forkrud.

on the subject of recruiting, how many kids from the city conference are playing for miac schools? it seems as if there are a lot more from the suburbs and out of state than from the city. and if that is the case is there a reason for that?

i would like to also say that a lot of credit for that run should go to coach steve bender for the excellent work he does with his youth camps getting the kids involved in the program as early as 1st grade and he is also a very good coach

also i dont know where recent eastview players live but i know the eastview 01 team that finished 3rd in conf had over half of their varsity team that was originally suppose to go to rosemount before they open enrolled to eastview when it opened and a couple others ended up there in the new boundry lines

Gameday is back  ;D  Here's my jottings about tonight's slate.

Macalester @ Saint John's - The Johnnies have a tough test tonight, but because the game is at home I have to figure that they will find a way to pull this one out.

Augsburg @ Concordia - Cobbers haven't played in a week, but it's a long drive from Minneapolis to Moorhead.  I'll take Concordia.

Bethel @ St. Thomas - My gut tells me this will be a closer game then some think.  Still, I think UST will win by close to double-digits as Bethel's three-point shooting will keep them in it.

Hamline @ Saint Mary's - As some have mentioned this might actually be the game of the night.   The Pipers played well in Winona last year and they are putting up a heck of a lot of points lately.  It will be a close game, but I'll take Hamline to come out on top.

St. Olaf @ Gustavus - Gusties hand the Oles another loss.

On another note, I see that Hamline freshman Tony Thrasher was named MIAC Player of the Week after he averaged 21.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per contest in three wins for the Pipers.  I'm curious, does anyone know when was the last time a freshman was named the conference player of the week?  Mr. Drake or Mr. Conboy must have done it last year at some point  ???

LOCAL - PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION:

Why don't you join the MIAC Pickems on the pickems message board & list your choices there?

You've been asked this same question by several different posters last year & yet again this year. As far as I know, you've never listed your reason/s.  Obviously you don't want to, but just out of curiosity we'd like to know why not.  Dam** it!!   ;D For better or worse, just about everyone else who posts with any regularity on the board lists their game picks there.

To answer your question about Drake or Conboy - No.  I'm sure an old guard poster like MIACManiac could let you know if & when a Frosh has ever won a MIAC Player of the Week.  I would think there probably has been one at some point in the past. (Ut, ohh do I feel a push for Tony Thrasher's greatness appointment coming from LC?)

Here's the list of last years POW winners.
