Drake...I am a parent of a 9 year old going on 13...I know you like MIAC hoops overall, but every parent has his/her favorites and even you have owned up to having purple pride when push comes to shove...and you missed a lyric reference from a tune I am sure you grew up with by CCR...

I guess we are into a bit of a slow time in the schedule...good thing its bowl season.

Wait until you have 2 kids.  You love them all – just in different ways.  ;D

And purple pride left in Red's McComb's armored van full of green money back in 2005.

(CCR was never really my kind of sound.  But were you referring to the line "Down on the corner, out on the street, Willy & the poor boys..."?)

Speaking of color - who came up with the color design for the Johnnies? Red & baby blue? Ouch!   ??? ;) Sometimes when I look at the SJU bench with the baby blue warmups & red uniforms or whatever godawful combination, I wonder if the players are from the same school.  ;)

Ok here's' an arbitrary list of favorite MIAC uniforms.
Football
Bethel's navy blue football unis.
Cord's new away uniforms

Basketball

Carleton -They've got that Navy Academy clean look going on.
STO – very sweet unis – both home & away.  Awesome logo too
GAC – black uniforms (gold uni's are b-a-d)
MAC's blue unis are alright - got a little splash of color.
UST  - purple uniform- the whites are sorta weak.

Slow time of the basketball season, and so I was wondering who people had as their MVP about 8 games in to the season?

I think Ryan McPartland, Joe Scott, and Aaron Burtzel are the front runners with McP being the long-shot of the 3.

Right now I'd go with Burtzel.  He's a semi-stat sheet stuffer & definite leader on the Johnnie squad.

MAC was done in by 24 turnovers and lost yesterday to Colorado Colledge 81-58.

Augsburg went to San Juan, Puerto Rico over the weekend and beat Sacred Heart 68-65 on Saturday.  Interesting that the Auggies would travel that far just for a single game.

This was the same CC team that was buried by 15 points by the onetwo-win Martin Luther squad Saturday.

UMAC 2, MIAC 123

VOJ- Wohler went to Orono.  ;)

PI- in the head to head count I still think it's MIAC 129 wins - UMAC 1.  :D

Weird that Mac would beat MLC fairly decisively  & then get drilled by Colorado College.  It seems the key for Mac's success is to limit Jerry Kraus & Holden Bigler's Johnson turnovers. 10+ between the two of them.

Drake...I saw that in my prep for the Granite City Hoops Classic which is next week, we are broadcasting the games the first day as well as the semi-finals, championship and any consolation bracket games involving the St. Cloud area schools.

Interesting coaching matchup in the first round game Orono vs St. Cloud Tech...Barry Wohler vs Mike Trewick...former Hamline and St. Mary's coaches.  Trewick has already joked that the talent on the rosters they have right now might be better than those at Ham or SMU during their days on the respective benches at those schools.

The UMAC...nuff said

Forgot to respond to the Johnnies uniform comment...the players last year or the year before voted on the look...FYI

Funny you should post this, I was about to post the statistics about early MVP front-runners.  2 of your 3 players listed are at the top.....

papahoops

Watched the UST/CSP webcast tonight. Tommies pull off nice 80-78 victory despite being overmatched in the paint, with a nice shooting effort from the perimeter. Healy comes off the bench to lead scoring with 18. Nicolai played a solid all round game with 15-16 points, and as he often does, hit a very big 3 in crunch time. Brady Ervin got his first action of the season and was on the floor late in the game. Overall, a nice team victory with everyone playing a role, but the number of good 3 point looks their offense generated and the resulting 3 point shooting % was the key to victory.

SUMMIT!!!!!

nice recap Papa, but dont forget to mention the remarkable job UST did holding onto the ball... ZERO turnovers in the first half and 3 for the game.  13-for -21 (61.7%) from 3-pt range is lights out. Pedretti looke dgood in the paint against vastly bigger foe, altho #34 from CStP while a huge body, has 2 moves- turning the ball over and whining. He is reminiscent of a certain MIAC center the Toms forced into making 7-8 TOs last season.

Solid win for UST. Now to take care of biz at UWSP and return to conference play in Jan.
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

I managed to squeeze in the UST-CSTP game around a little last minute xmas shopping.  The Tomcats are progressing nicely since I saw them play for the first time against UW-River Falls at the beginning of the season.  This time they looked like a team rather than 10-12 different players out on the court. John Nance did a nice job of hitting the defensive glass, pushing the ball up the court & feeding Alex Healy out on the break.  At some point this season I'm guessing we'll see a headline that reads Healy's Comet.  Healy looks like he could be poised to have a breakout season.  Josh Pedretti is starting to show he's got another move other than going to his right.

CSTP-UST Game Summary

Next week against UW-Stevens Point could be the biggest challenge of the season.  Ain't no way the Pointers are going to let UST come in there & shoot 13-21from behind the arc. Tommies better bring their hard hats.

Jeez Mose, you would have to antagonize the sleeping Gustie giant. I'd leave those guys alone ::) ;).  I'm pretty sure they're going to have something special cooked up for UST on the 13th.

#34 is Dan Vandervieren.  If he didn't want to be such a hack he could be a force in the NSIC.  He was a stud at Hopkins HS, but has bounced around a bit since the state championship back in 06 (?). He had a scholie to Purdue, transferred to Colorado State & ended up at CSTP.  CSTPs' style of play doesn't really suit his game since he's more effective as a post up player in a half court offense.

dang, i wanted to get to this---but a dp "squeeze" was not possible for me.  sounds like it was a fun one.  not too often that you get a chance to watch a game with both teams playing at home!   ;)

Nice recaps.  I suspect UST will continue to improve as Fritz tinkers to find the right chemistry with his talented bunch.

Off Topic - Longhorns took out last season's D-I runner up, Michigan State, by the score of 79-68.  They had to play more of a Big 10 style game than when they beat North Carolina on Saturday.
