Its as good of a day for hamline as you could ask.  Pipes flex at home against the johnnies and gain some momentum running into STU.  although i don't like playing STU after a loss, they will come out with some fire.  Good to see the pipes are looking like a playoff team once again.

Don't worry Proph, the Tommies will let their frustrations on St. John's Saturday night. It's our bye.

papahoops

Hats off to the Gusties last night on an outstanding performance. It was a great college basketball game to attend. Many have been stated previously, but my keys to game are:
1) Seth Anderson (first task this am on my computer was checking out "maple river" on mapquest)
2) Gusties win turnover battle 11 to 19
3) Seth Anderson (I kept looking at the program wondering "where did this guy come from?"
4) Three UST starters (Scott, Halvorsen, Eicher) combine for 6 points ??? ???
5) Seth Anderson (first Gustie player in several years that can "make plays" and not need the system to creat shots
6) Zero Paulson turnovers. I figured he needed 2 or less to give the Gusties a chance.
7) Seth Anderson (What a mid-range game!!!!)

Side Notes:
Any bold pre-seaason predictions I made (undefeated UST MIAC season,  breakout season for a certain frontcourt player) are obviously shredded and burned. I have been waiting for several weeks for Willy to bring up the latter, and appreciate that in the afterglow of a great Gustie victory, it was an appropriate time to zing me. The black crow went well with my breakfast bagel this AM Willy.

I really liked a "Biewen" when I saw him play for Edina and thought he would be a nice addition to a MIAC squad (this turns out to be one prediction I made that turned out correct :). I did not realize the Biewen playing for the Gusties was the same player until I recognized him last night. I thought he made a solid contribution off the bench and will fit in well for the future. Gusties really have a solid sophomore class, and a great bench. Did I mention I really like that Seth Anderson?????

Good news for HU any way you look at it. If Tommies win, they get their frustrations out. If they lose, they could be looking at some potential implosions.

A few observations from the HU/SJU game last night:

St. John's:

* Burtzel is a beast. He made Hipp and Brown look silly a couple of times last night with his crafty post moves.
* SJU is really good, maybe the best offensive team in the conference. Latzke (4/12--1/5 from 3) and Schwartz (0/7--0/4 from 3) were cold shooting last night, but I can only imagine the problems they create for opposing defenses when they are knocking down shots.
* I liked the minutes Hujdurovic gave them off the bench (8 pts, 7rbds, 2 blks--15 minutes). If you haven't seen him, this guy is a mammoth. The one problem with him is that he's not quite a gazelle in trasition :D
* They are scrappy as heck. Multiple scuffles during the course of the night and they really didn't give an inch.

HU:

* It's impressive how effective they are when guys are getting to the hoop. SJU struggled to cut off dribble penetration by the HU guards which led to lots of lay ups and dishes to Hipp.
* They rebounded last night how I had hoped they would against GAC. They went and got the ball instead of waiting for it to come to them.
* Loved Hipps aggressiveness. No one will be able to guard him if he goes to the hoop like he did last night (10/22 from the floor).
* It's amazing what Andersen does for HU's offense when he's knocking down 3's.
* Another nice game from PI's guy Carroll  :D (4/5--10 pts 7 assts). The fact that he is making himself more of a scoring option just makes HU that much more difficult to defend.
* Brown is going to be impossible to stop if he plays like he did last night. Besides the obvious (8/10--26 pts, 13 rbds, 4 assts) he had multiple possessions where he drove, jump stopped, kicked it out, let the offense work for him, and ended up scoring later in the possession after the defense wore down. Fun to watch.

It's amazing that either SJU or UST will be on a 2 game losing streak going in to their match up with either HU or GAC (on Monday SJU plays GAC and UST plays HU). Definitely raises the stakes of Saturday's game between the two on at Gangelhoff.

Thanks for all of the write ups on the GAC/UST game. Sounds like it was a fun one to be at. Congrats to GAC.

The guy is much improved. It's tough to find a decent 6'9" kid in the MIAC, but he is definitely serviceable. It's just real tough to pronounce his name  :o

Your observations were spot on huhoops...Burtzel has come a long way from where he was as a freshman he has a well rounded game

Great DEFENSE by the Pipers, the Johnnies looked a little out of sync offensively and the Pipers defended well, especially off the ball, I am not sure the Johnnies had one cut for a layup out of their offense, but had multiple layups against Concordia and St. Olaf

The Pipers on their own create match up problems for SJU with Hipp and Brown, I would assume Brown is a tough matchup for most teams in the MIAC and he consistently hit shots without forcing the action.  I am glad he is a senior to be honest.  I think the game would have been a little different if Hipp were called for a foul or two for going over the back of the Johnnies when trying to rebound, but that did not happen, and calls over a season do tend to even out, so I am sure he will be riding the pine in a later game because of his aggresiveness.

The Pipers dominated the boards last night which really helped them notch the win, that will be a future point of emphasis for SJU, everyone committing to attack the glass, that and some transition lapses for SJU led a lead the Johnnies could not overcome.

The Johnnies will need to re-focus for the matchup with UST on Saturday night, they have dropped six straight in the series.

Great job overall by the Pipers, Coach Whitmore has things heading in the right direction.

Do I know you?   ;) Those were my sentiments exactly.

You could tell Brown was twitchy a couple of times, just itching to pull an ill-advised trey. Nice maturation on his part.

And at the rate the season is going, Pops will be eating Nick Carroll crow along with PI.  At this point Carroll is the only Piper player (7 assists on the night) who can consistently get the ball into Hipp where he's in a good position to score.  By the way, I know a former MIAC post player or two who could do wonders for Hipp's post moves.  All he needs are two money moves: Drop step, drop step & counter...With his athleticism he can feast on garbage baskets. Burtzel is basically killing defenders with his quickness, & a sweet up & under.

Next week I'll post a list of favorite MIAC players to watch & leading the charge will be Aaron Burtzel.  A player's player.  He should be ALL MIAC, All Defense, & if he keeps the scoring numbers up, make College Sporting News POY as well.

I give credit for the Johnnies scrappiness. They play good hardnosed basketball, & for the most part compete fair, but the whininess from Coach Smith is annoying at best.  A Hamline guard practically gets decapitated on a breakaway layup, the Hamline bench is screaming for a flagrant foul, & Smitty is yelling about an alleged mystery foul that happened on the other end of the court.   Sorry VOJ, I just had to get that off my chest.

Saturday night's game between the Johnnies & Tommies has all the makings of a major battle.  Two proud, talented teams trying desperately to remain relevant.  A prime time alley brawl.  The MIAC version of UNC & Duke, Syracuse & UConn, etc.  Sweet!  And like HU pointed out, for both teams to turn around & have to play either the Gusties or the high flying Pipers on Monday night. Fans better get there early Saturday night - this could be epic!

Too bad I have tickets for St. Paul Chamber Orchestra that night.  ;)

Drake I understand your views...but Coach Smith is not the only one in the MIAC who gets in the ear of the official and to be honest on the road I think you need to yell a little louder to get a call or two.  As for phantom fouls...there were some that were not called that could have had an impact on the game when Hipp went over the back on rebound opportunities on Hamline's offensive end in the first half, and as I said the calls as the season goes even out, nuff said.

Regarding Sam Blank's foul, the J's were lucky to not have an intentional foul called, it was a breakaway situation and although Sam tried to go for the ball he also tried to make sure that a shot did not get taken, and he wrapped up the Piper player.  I said as much on air, check the tape.  Sam is a hardnosed kid, I give him a little credit for the hustle back on D.

The Orchestra?  Wow we have a Renaissance man on the board, who knew? :o  Sound like "date night" in the Palmer household which is not all bad. :D

Orchestra? Probably a better chance of seeing OAS there than a MIAC game ;)

Justin Cobbs swiped a Michigan State's hand than arm on a fast-break layup and gets called for a flagrant or intentional foul. Blank's foul was 5x worse.

CC CRE...TT TIN...CRE TIN  Cretin Derham Hall! I guess I saw a bad day for Nicky C against Carleton. He was great against GAC and SJU. He has gone from chuck and duck three-pointer shooter to the best playmaking guard for the Pipers. Props to him. I do love Vic Easter as well. He has to work on his shot and finishing skills when he gets to the hoop, but his defense and passing (his no-look pass to Hipp I believe was awesome) are fantastic.

I didn't watch the game last night, but I've got to defend the refs for not calling the big guy for "over the back".  I'm sure you know this, but there is no such thing as "over the back".  If he displaced the guy in front of him, then yes it's a foul, but the same is true for the player boxing out.  A player may box out, but he can't back out and displace the other player to give himself more space to get the rebound.  Who is closest to the hoop doesn't matter.

Willy Wonka

Say all you want about Brown and Hipp's offensive game/maturation/whatever...but it's that Lead Pipe defense that makes them especially scary to me.

Yes, that's a shot at Bethel with Saturday's game...uhhh...whatever is considered the opposite of looming  ;D
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

It's one of those "we'll have to agree to disagree" routines.  I've listen to my share of radio webcasts & some schools just seem to work the officials more than others.  SJU is a classic example.  Coach Smith is practically non-stop.  Other coaches seem to be barking and calling out signals and instructions to their players, with the occasional aside at a ref.  Smith's primary role seems to be working the refs.

For example, whenever I go a Bethel game I rarely hear Coach Westlund working the officials, its: "cut, cut, cut, move it, move it; back screen, back screen, nice job fellas" etc.  Fritz from UST usually has a few choice words that he growls at the refs, while GAC's Hanson seems to have a couple of cutting comments that he sneers at the refs.

Smitty? Non-stop, annoying buzz. And then the situation from last night that I was referring to?  Some times you just have to take your medicine & be done with it.  He should of shut his mouth & just been grateful that Blank didn''t get called for the technical.

**
During the first half, the Johnnies did score a few times off that down screen when the cutter would curl to the basket for the sweet layup.

I'd also add that Nermin has really made great strides, developed his game & physically filled out since he first showed up at St Johns & made the Palmer FY All- Name list.  If I recall, the pronunciation guide that was listed on the SJU website of his last name was "who-der-oh-vitch" which I liked to say fast in the form of an Scandinavian question: "Nermin? Who der old vitch with you?"  ::) ::) ;D

***
Hambone is going to be a tough out at home.  But I still think its going to come down to the Gusties, Johnnies & Tommies to determine the league & tourney champ.

By the way AO, the Gusties did lose an in-region game to UW-Lax earlier this season.

Willy - If I recall you said you haven't seen Burtzel play yet. Check him out when the Johnnies show up in St. Peter.  The kid can flat out play, & is a treat to watch on both ends of the court.

So based on what u are saying if player A is fighting for the rebound and is shorter than player B, than player B can come over his back take the ball from this grasp and shoot it or outlet pass with no foul being called?  I am not sure that your thinking is in line with how games are called...I have seen it called more than once.

As long as player B doesn't push player A in the back, he can absolutely use his height to his advantage.  A foul occurs when player A backs up into player B and displaces him or player B pushes player A forward.  Refs typically allow player A to push more than player B, but that doesn't mean they should, and if in this case the ref is allowing player B to push more, it is up to the players to adjust and the officials to at least call it the same way on the other end of the floor.

5) Seth Anderson (first Gustie player in several years that can "make plays" and not need the system to creat shots6) Zero Paulson turnovers.

Did I mention I really like that Seth Anderson????

and several years in this case for some of us is a long, long time ago.  who IS this mystery gusty in recent memory that could even begin to do this?  ???
