I managed to fight the snow to get over to Hutton Arena. A VERY entertaining game. It looked like HU may have been looking past Cord  but they go the job done.  STRANGE starting lineup for Cord-- no Fraase, no Olson. Then down the stretch, Fraase was sitting again. Olson & Olmscheid kept the Cobbers in the game and threatening to knock off the juggernaut known as Hamline.

The box score indicated that Olson started, but not Fraase.  It had Hagemeyer and Oba something as new starters.   It looks like the shake up had the desired effect as they gave the Vipes a good run for it on the road.  Interesting that Fraase only logged 15 minutes of PT off the bench.

Another interesting tidbit, this one from the GAC-Auggie game.  Auggie's 6'4", 260 lb. Cory Polta (he of the .250 free throw percentage ilk [.118 in conference play] had 3 blocks on the night.  That's one more block than 6'9" Sam Paulson has on the entire season.

VOJ - A rather uncharacteristically quiet night for Burtzel.  Did MAC do anything special to limit his effectiveness or did he just come out flat for the matchup with the Scots?

It was sag city on Burtzel...Bowman was doing a good job fronting him at times and at 6'8" he is tough to throw it over...plus Aaron was smart enough to see that other guys had a hot hand, like Herman, Burns, Blank and Nermin...and with Nermin starting in place of Barmore I am not sure he was in his normal position

The Js spent alot of time at the line and hit their 3s in the second half that along witht the j's defense and MAC cooling off decided the game.

All aboard the Jonker Kong!  ;D

Seth Jonker & the Jonkernauts making a stop at a MIAC school near you.  A double-double last night against cross-town rival St.Olaf with 18 points 10 rebs eh? It seems this year's version of the Carleton Knights is putting on a mini-run similar to the 17 game conference win streak they had in 2006.  Back then they did it with another roundish type of post – Big Dan Forkrud. ;)

GAC's loss last night to Augsburg takes a bit of the luster off the GAC-HAM matchup on Saturday & makes the UST-CARL game look real appealing. Tomcats had better beware.

But before Saturday we have another barnburner brewing at Hutton arena/field house on Wednesday night, Pipes & Royals.  The Auggies try to keep their momentum going against the desperate Cobbs in Moorhead, SJU tries to keep pace by playing the Oles at home, and the Redbirds try one more time to knock off one of the league powers SMU @ Carleton.  Finally, the Gusties try to take the taste of defeat out of their mouth against MAC at home.

Interesting fact: Mac was tied at the half (huh?) 40-40 with SJU last night before the Johnnies pulled away in the 2nd half.

All of the underdogs are dangerous at this time of the year - favorites beware.

They are who we thought they are.

GAC is a solid team, yes. Are they a great team? No. Are they still the second best team in the league? Probably. The Gusties lack that "go-to-guy" when the offense is struggling. UST has Nicolai and Scott, Auggie has Cassens, HAM has Brown, SJU has Burtzel, etc. GAC had Seth Anderson going there for a while....Wirtjes and Van Sickle have had their moments, too. But on a consistent basis, they don't have that one player that can take over a game.

Some of the tight wins GAC got the first half of the season are starting to even out. I think they finish third with Auggie Tech winning either four or five more games (no more UST, HAM or GAC).

Quite the performance by the Knights last night. Looked like a dogfight 10 minutes in, but the Oles went stone-cold over last 8 mins of 1st half and first 5 of second half, going like 3-17 with 5 TOs as Knights went from up 3 to up 29 during that 13-minutes stretch. Oles led once, 3-2, and never threatened. I really thought it would be a closer game, but Jonker and Rosett dominated Neville and co. down low and Carleton neutralized Fong, Jaryan and Torell on the perimeter.

Knights looking good for MIAC Playoffs, but if this great play continues it could be interesting to see if they can play their way to a higher seed than 6th. Have to take care of business vs. a hungry, scrappy SMU squad that historically struggles at West Gym (last win came during 1999-2000, I believe). Figure they'd have to go 4-1 over their last 5 to have a chance.

That's ridiculous. Nothing will ever top Hot Hoagie's appearance on The Bachelorette. He was an epic failure.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Seriously though, thanks for the update, PI.  I was at the Gustie/Tommie clash at Gus earlier this year and the Gusties looked to be back to their 2004/05 form (albeit without the strawberry blonde phenom) but haven't been able to check out any recent games.  Surprised to see the stumble but your analysis seems to make sense.

I think early on I said," Watch out for the Pipers." I still believe that as the season winds down. They may  not be able to beat St.  Thomas, but anyone else is a toss up. I  realize they lost to the Gussies twice but you know what they say about beating a team three times. I would love to see that game.

Coach Whitmore is my pick for conference, "Coach of the Year." He and his staff recruited the talent and they are surprising people. This is his third season so most of these players are his recruits. Congrats to the Pipers---Keep it going---

Disagree, they are winning on talent alone.  He plays like 11 people a game, its absolutely ridiculous.  He crushes the players confidence by playing them 14 minutes one game then 2 minutes the next with 0 justification.  Coach of the year has to go to Auggies coach imo.
