Do you suppose that Sports Illustrated's next "sign that the apocolpyse is on us" might be:

The UMAC gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 3 tournament.

Really?   ::)

AO

In other news, is the UMAC turning into the run & fun league?  Nah, they're just continuing their domination over the MIAC.

Bethany Lutheran lays the smack down on Macalester 90-83.  Bethany ran the lead to 20 with 8 minutes left before Mac made a run to make it a little bit interesting without being threatening.   -----------shoutout to drake over----------

Part 1 of the "Snelling ave. shootout" came down to the final possession again as Northwestern failed to score in the last 3 and 1/2 minutes, but held on for a 62-61 win over the Pipers.  Hipp put up K-Love numbers of 19 and 20 boards for Hamline, while soph. Wade Chitwood (no relation to Jimmy) poured in 19 with 4 assists for the home side.  Pretty sloppy game that turned when NWC hit 5 jumpers in a span of 2 minutes before going on the aforementioned cold streak to end the game.

I'm not sure Hamline has the shooters or slashers to complement Hipp, but it might have just been a poor first game.  They certainly have the athletes, though not necessarily the size.  Campbell looks to be a nice add, and I was more impressed with Aguirre than I had been previously, but I would be surprised if this Hamline team made a run at the MIAC playoffs.

-----The UMAC-MIAC series now stands 2-2.

Sorry AO, I didn't realize my words stung so much.  ;) I don't have time to go back & look up last year's stats, but I believe the record between the two conferences was something like 190-1.  Actually 19-1.  Lifetime:  MIAC - 9 gazillion UMAC - 13.   :-*

Let's check back with each other once the non-conference portion of the schedule is completed.

Were you at the NW-Hamline game?  For as badly as the Pipes apparently played, they had a chance to win in the final seconds after a NW player missed both FTs.  I listened to the final minute & it sounded like Noah Aguirre grabbed the reb, dribbled down the court & missed a point blank layup with seconds left?  Tough way to lose for a MIAC 2nd division team, a narrow escape for one of the premier teams in the UMAC. ;)

Wartburg 56 -52 over Carleton.

Alright,I understand protecting your sources, but what's going Carleton backers?  I've noticed one of you signed on the board today & no posts.  ???

Initially I was surprised by the game score & then I noticed that Jeremy Sutherland didn't  play a single minute in this game, nor is there an explanation in the game summary. He would of made a huge difference in the outcome of this game no matter how poorly the Carlies shot.  As I looked at the boxscore again I realize there's no mention of Blaise Davis in the game report either.  I would think the absence of a 3+ and 2+ year starter would warrant some attention. Nope , nada, zilch.

So then I look through the Carleton season preview & there's no reference to Davis at all in the player review, yet he's listed on the roster.  Something smells fishy at West gym & it ain't the residue from the October floods.  ::) :'(

4th time in 6 years the NWC and HU game is decided by one point. NWC did not score a point in the final 4 minutes or so. I don't think we are really going to see what Hamline can do until the second half of the conference season, so I don't think you can take much from this game. Hopefully the young guys can develop in time to give Hipp a second playoff birth to go with his phenomenal career statistics wise.....did anybody catch the audio to this game? The announcers were.....I don't even have words.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin' back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" .....Jesus Shuttlesworth

Agreed on all accounts. Two critical missing pieces 1) A consistent outside threat.  2)  Unless he gets help, Hipp will foul out of the majority of games.

The announcers were - shall we say interesting.  Wow!  ;)

Yes,  I was in the gym.  Pretty nice crowd by the way, I'd guess 850.  The Aguirre shot at the end was from 10 feet and wasn't a clean look, the desperation 3 by Hipp was also off-balance.  So not exactly the soul crusher it sounds like the announcers made it out to be, but still pretty exciting.  This game would look wildly different (might be a similar outcome though) if played in March with Anderstrom likely back for my squad and Hamline's guards a little more effective with a season of practice underneath their belts.

Carleton brought 11 players, dressed 10 and played 8. The kid who was there and did not dress was an African-American who I'd guess to be about 6'3". Don't know WHO. I was at the game and post quickness will be a problem if Carleton stays AS IS. Saatoff is a 6'7" forward and had his way on the block and out to 15'. W'burgs center had no problem getting position in the paint, just didn't shoot. 6'8" 200#. W'burg played without their #2 leading returning starter. (ankle) Also if 3 aren't falling Carleton will have problems. Most of the 3-18 first half shots were OPEN shots. Hardly any transition points for C'ton

FYI Wartburg was voted to finish 3rd in IIAC in what will be a down year in the league. Wartburg will also we without returning all-conference PG due to ACL tear on first day of open gym.

Thanks for the update Alfred.

The African American player you identified could have been one of two players, Jeremy Sutherland or Michael Grinnell.  Both players are around 6-4 while Grinnell is the heavier of the two.  In a low scoring game such as last night's, I've still got to believe Sutherland would have been the difference maker. He's equally adept at guarding a perimeter player or a decent sized post player.

In the photo below Jeremy Sutherland is to the left of Michael Grinnell #51 and has his arm around #23.

Blaise Davis, the other missing Knight, is in the first row, to the right of the player holding the MIAC trophy.

Derek (and the) Domino is easily the best name in the MIAC! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY4KGsotXPQ

+k dp!   nice job as usual on the all name team.  looks like bethel is dominating your group this year.  derek domino is a pretty solid name, but John de cleen is not bad either.
as for comments about some interesting announcing during the hamline/nwstern broadcast,  by chance did anyone happen to catch the train wrecks doing the bethel at stout game?
OMG!!   :o

SUMMIT!!!!!

nice work on the all-names team, drake, but how can ANY name top Derek Domino?

Auggies have a home opener tomorrow and there is the BU Cupcake Invitational on FR and Sat, so we're not without hoops this weekend!

The panelists were really torn between Derek & Parker, but in the end the tiebreaker came down to whether or not the freshman would get varsity minutes this year.  Based on early reports from Augsburg, it seems Hines will earn significant playing time this season.

Mose - don't forget the Cobbs kick off their season tonight in a home opener against the UMAC preseason favorite- UM-Morris.  This could be an interesting pairing between two teams picked to finish in the playoffs of their respective leagues.  Oles are also home to the Luther smurfs from the IIAC.

Provided the Royals get by Trinity Int'l on Friday night, they could end up being the "cupcake" on Saturday against UW-Lax or Wisconsin Lutheran.

Unofficially,

I like the Cobbs at home against UM-Morris. (3)
Oles over the Norse (4)
Dawgs big over Northland College (6)
UW-Superior over MAC (5)
UST in a solid, but close win over the Pacific Lutes (2)
Bethel in a pickem against Trinity Int'l (1)
